Re: Look what was in the NY Times today

Can we just call this Team Battlefortress 2:Heroes of Capitalism already? I just hope it fails miserably because i hate the word "microtransaction" so much i go into a white hot rage and have to stifle the desire to do horrible things to kittens when i hear it.

It's ok. Kittens deserve it.

One of my mates suggests that, because it's free and easy to set up, this might be a good game for a "get together" for a community that otherwise plays disparate games. (Both MA and TG fit that profile.)

It'll be one of these games you play for a day or two think it's pretty fun and then 2142 will suck you back in.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today

Out of curiosity, how would you all feel about a full-on BF3 that retains the hallmarks of the classic game (some realism, team play, big maps, squads, etc.), that's free to download and play, but in which you pay for extras (additional kits, unlocks, maps, etc.) or that has a commercial that runs between rounds?

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today

In theory a good idea I'd probably like it (I'm cheap ), but people with more money than sense will go out and buy all weapons and kits etc. within hours of launch. I thinik the best way for a game such as this to work would be have the unlock system more or less as is but to get the unlock you need to pay a dollar or something.

I would severely dislike watching commercials, Tivo has me spoiled.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today

The great thing about Battlefield Heroes is that even though everyone thinks its terrible idea/game you are all most likely going to play it since it is free. Even playing it once or twice will net EA tons of money from the adverts alone. Its genius.

Depends on what you have to pay for. I mean if you are buying guns/abilities that far outclass you from a stock soldier then that is bad. If you buy stuff that better specializes a certain aspect but puts you at a disadvantage in others, then that may be fine.

Battlefield Heroes looks awesome.

I'd be all for it if there was a $50 version that had all the purchasable extras already included and no commercials. Because I would buy that one.

The cartoony stuff doesn't bother me. I don't think it fits BF, but whatever. But when someone can buy an auto-headshot hack or whatever direct from the Developer, I'm out.

Re: Look what was in the NY Times today

This is the prevailing model in Asia (somebody mentioned Gunbound) and the most successful games there avoid selling things that provide too much of an in-game advantage. Pay to win ultimately kills those games, so pay for variety / customization is what I'd expect here.

Can you imagine the little floating hearts and stars above Lyra's head in game, or a message after you get got that says, "3rd Roolz, 8th Droolz"?

I think this would be a sad day for true battlefield. Think of all the preteens with their parents credit cards that would flock to the opportunity to "pwn" without possesing the true skill to do so. Earning the unlocks by the point system at least forces you to gain experience as you advance.

I do have an issue with the pay-for-perks model of gaming. This just means that I will choose not to play those types of games, as I believe that how strong your character is should be defined by your skill or the amount of time you've put into the game, not how big your real-life wallet is.

I am sure that many people will play BF: Heroes, and I take no issue with that. I won't be one of them.
I agree completely. Paying for extras is wrong, both in the sense that (if they added this feature to 2142 or made you pay initially for the game) you already paid for the full game, and that you should have to earn what you use. I'll stick to the games I pay for once--maybe $50-$60 --but only once
