To post in this thread please turn to page 15 of the Flight Operations Manual and list the maximum range of the "Talon" missile...

Ahh, the good ole days of anti-piracy pop quizzes!

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

Not a 2142 player, I stopped at BF2 after getting pissed at the way EA treated community server admins.

But I started with arcade games at Chucky Cheese ca 1978, then lots of cartridges for the Atari 2600, then an Apple IIe (I loved Rescue Raiders, later renamed Armor Alley). I bought an Amiga and got addicted to Bubble Bauble, Lemmings, and ultimately Carrier Command.

Much later I started online play with TFC (of HL1) and played that up until Tribes 2 was released. I then became addicted to T2 for several years. (My team still holds a big scrim every week or two. Let me know if you want to play, it's open to everyone.) I played and ran servers for BF1942 and BF2, skipping BFV (sat in the drawer). I played UT2004 and ran a server briefly.

Now I play mostly WoW but occasionally load up ETQW. I hate the PvP in WoW but love it in ETQW.

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

After I saw the first two replies to this thread, I started to stare at my collection of PS2 games that I have, as well as a ton of demo discs. I was just about to sort through them and see what were my favourites, when I also started thinking about my gigantic collections (note: plural) of mega drive, sega saturn and dreamcast games that I also have, when I thought...nahhh.

I've played games since I can remember (and surprisingly I only own two PC games...) and these are my absolute highlights in a trip down memory lane that most of you won't care to read, but some of you might be, and it might make you remember the times of when the amstrad and the snes were the coolest things around. (hey I'm a sentimental guy, what can I say).

1) An Amstrad that took literally half an hour to boot up. It played like a laggy space invaders. The fact that it was kept in a dusty cold loft didn't help.
2) Sonic (ALL OF THEM...EVER) Mega drive...ah the simple old days. An act of genius.
3)Mortal Kombat (Mega Drive) - I was such a tender age when I saw all that gore, and it efinitely hardened me up for the rest of my life, and I think that's why I remember it. A legend in it's own right that I still have a place for in my cold, gaming heart (thanks to MK).
4) Virtua Fighter 2 (Sega Saturn) - the best goddamn fighting game ever. Perfectly balanced fighting game, and original in every sense of the word (apart from that it was the 2nd VF )
5) Loaded (Sega Saturn) A stupidly gory and fun top down game that was light-years ahead of its time in terms of technical gameplay and difficulty, especially on co-op.
6) WWF Attitude - The crappiest game I've ever played, but I can't help but remembering it.
7) One of the thousands of Jedi Knight games on PC. Quite a magnificent game actually, had a ton of memories with this one.

Now this is dreamcast, where the slightly more recent and less smudgy memories arrive:

7) Power Stone 2 - Just a fun game, used to play it with my cousins + brother. 4 guys just sluggin it out in supremely awesome fashion for hours on end.
8) Virtua Tennis - The Dreamcast version is the best tennis game I've played, definitely.
9) Quake 3 Arena - Same as Power Stone, except it was capture the flag for hours on end instead...
10) Shenmue 1 & 2 - Probably my favourite games of all time. My life would not be what it is today without the experience that was Shenmue one and two. Good times.
11) DOA2 - Much better than the PS2 version. All Dreamcast -> PS2 conversions feel cheap and flimsy, and this is no different. The tagging in this was way better than any sort of tagging that Tekken could come up with. (Tekken-hater right here btw people) Tagging while in mid-flow was awesome, those 20 hit floater combos were unbelievable, plus tag throws, and when you got those right, especially the complicated ones, man it was amazing. And everyone who has played DOA2 has tried doing Hayabusa's crazy jumping ninja moves. Anyone that can do the full thing on a reversal...I bow to you.
12) Soul Calibur - I used to watch my older brother and my older cousin dish it out for hours, with me and my younger cousin watching two pros at work. They never lost to other people, only each other. My bro = Kilik, My cousin = Maxi. They used to do cheats where they wouldn't get knocked out the entire round (unlimited energy), and also turn themselves entirely gold (Player 1) and silver (player 2), and just play 1 round for hours, trying to get the craziest and most painful moves in, sometimes playing in "ring-out" rings to make it interesting.
13) Command & Conquer RA2 - My cousin went pro on this, he won tournaments and parts for his computer and everything, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Ended up being so addictive I literally had to have my ass unglued to the seat.

I had been a sworn Sega fan for a long, long time, and it was painful to see Sega's slow decline, while Sony and Nintendo only became more popular. Sega set the benchmarks for so many things, and now they were out in the cold. After months of fighting it, I accepted that Sega's time was up, and I did the unthinkable. I bought a PS2.

14) MGS2 - The first game I got and played with the PS2, and it had a magic that made me think that the PS2 wasn't a complete disaster. Absolutely beautiful game.
15) Herdy Gerdy - I stand corrected from my comment about WWF Attitude. This is the crappest game ever. It came with the PS2 pack, and it was ridiculous. I ended up turning it off after 10 minutes because I had no idea what was going on, and I thought I might end up breaking my TV out of frustration. Instead I played through the Tanker part of MGS2 and I felt all warm and fuzzy inside. (I think I must've played that level a hundred times tryna get that damn camouflage and bandanna, and same with the Raiden story)
16) GTA3 -> San Andreas - Never finished any of them due to a bunch of reasons. In chronological order - 3- Difficulty, VC- Couldn't be asked, SA- stolen game + memory cards = not a happy bunny. However I saw the huge amount of potential in all of them, and they were all amazing fun in the end. I had played Vice City so much I knew the whole script for the VCPR radio station off by heart.
17) Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain - A 4 player answer to our problems on PS2, they just didn't make 4 player multiplayer's like they did on the Dreamcast, but glitch exploits and TLC (that's tables, ladders and chairs btw) made this game a 4 player laugh all the time. especially when we'd create some alien freak of nature in the character create mode, and then give it woman's moves, and have one person fighting with that person...ahhhh, good waste of times.
18) Hitman 2 -> Blood Money. - Just awesomeness + coolness. Loved it way too much than is socially acceptable (notice my avatar people)
19) Pro Evolution Soccer 2 -> 5 - I stopped buying them after 5, because the series started to leave it's roots at number 6, to go towards a more FIFA style of play. In the USA it's called "Winning Eleven," and has been dominated by FIFA in the USA football (soccer) gaming market in the USA, but Pro Evo is the winner on this side of the pond. Amazing series that's sucked up hours of my time, but given me so much pleasure back by me beating some of my friends with embarrassing scorelines, and even my older brother's friend, who got majorly peeved after I whooped him silly. He got rinsed for years.
20) MGS3 - thought I'd separate 2 and 3 because 3 was a completely different experience. 2 was great when I started playing, and it made me anticipate 3 from the moment the teaser trailers started to leak through. It was a game that I hated...at first, but eventually the controls and gameplay grew on me, and it became another instant classic next to number 2.
21) Ace Combat Squadron Leader - I had always enjoyed the demos I'd seen of flying games, but shooters and action games had always been my kinda thing, and flying games were just that type of genre I never thought of playing. I bought this game just for kicks, and I fell in love with it. I'm waiting desperately for the next Ace Combat to come out on PS3. I never bought Belkan war, because...well, I dunno why, bu hey, I didn't.
22) God of War 1 & 2 - Both just amazing games.
23) Shadow of the Colossus - Almost had as much of an impact on me as Shemue, and if I was a little younger when I played this, it may just have been. Stunning game.
24) Assassins' Creed (PS3) - An amazing experience really, best so far on PS3, apart from...
25)CoD4 with my four cousins. We're a lot older now, but we all remember those Quake days. It's almost as good...almost

Edit: Ended up being a bit longer than I expected it to be, I was tryna keep it short...at least it's a round number so then it looks like I planned it that way .

Now that is hard to believe. Someone who's got as good a shot on them as you have, I'd think would have been a hardcore gamer...

Anyway, just to annoy you people further, some obvious classics I missed out from reading this thread:

Pokemon games on an emulator
Doom, DUH!!
Deus Ex (never played it, but it's legendary)
Timesplitters 2 (same as above )
@Sythos I know some crazy Runescape guys...you don't wanna end up like them...Level 100 on like 3 different accounts each and they are seriously messed up...
@Daithi, all those apply to me apart from diskpark and themeworld...seriously...it's freaky .

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

LOL RPG books, ey?

Check out the Fighting Fantasy Books. I've got the first 4 somewhere gathering dust, and they're all pretty sweet. Warlock of Firetop Mountain...Citadel of Chaos...forgot the next one...and some creature of something or other...they're all very interestingly done...There's about 20 in total...I'd like to get them all one day, I remember they entertained me for ages when there was nothing else to do when I was younger and under-challenged...man I miss those days of doing nothing...

edit: and hey, Twisted Metal...I remember playing that in the motherland with cousins on a different side of the family tree...

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

Glad to hear it. i tried it myself once, and I played it solid for like a week, but then when I took a step back and realise what kind of a game it was, I just left it. I mean, those graphics aren't exactly mind-blowing, and there's no goddamn map to tell you where you are and where other stuff is. I just ended up killing a bunch of cows and trying to trick people into buying the meat for a million gold pieces...it almost worked...

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

O yh, and wipeout for the dreamcast was awesome...

I've never liked racing games, unless they have a nice twist like Burnout, which was also decent, but wasn't a classic.

Wipeout Fusion was also pretty sweet on the PS2. It's just about getting the cheats to unlock all levels and racers, and then going for the hardest levels with the best racer and on hardest difficulty (and by best, I mean 100% speed and 0 control) and just going crazy. The ideas they had for the levels were awesome. I remember playing a level for the first time, and I was driving completely straight, and suddenly it just went straight down for a about 200 straight metres. I got the biggest rush of adrenaline as I suddenly just dropped, two racers firing cannons and, missiles at me while we plummeted downwards...or the first time you land one one of those things that makes you jump on the ceiling, and everyone else is driving on the ceiling...well actually you're the one driving on the ceiling, but you get it. Plus the crazy views, and weapons like Quake. The first time you use quake is the craziest thing in video gaming ever. It sends a ripple that travels through the whole level and sends everyone in disarray as you zoom past them. If ever there were an "Oh Snap!" moment, it's then. It's best when you get it in a pack of about 6 or 7 racers, or even better at the beginning where everyone is pretty close together, you just put the brakes on a bit, let everyone go past and quake them. Or as you see a weapon pad coming up just as you're 2nd and can see the no.1 just ahead going towards the finishing line, and you get an awesome weapon...those kinda moments can only some from Wipeout, and I hope they make a good online version for PS3, because that would be awesome.
