Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

Yh Monopoly and chess (never played risk though) and obviously scrabble...yay, I'm a word junkie . But I never was much of a board game guy, but I do like Monopoly. My dad used to own when my whole family used to sit down and play, but he's a shrewd businessman so no surprises there. I dunno how big it is in the USA, but Snakes & Ladders is like a given for everyone in England. I'm just guessing, since I haven't heard it mentioned...

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

Sonic: The Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)
NHL 95 (Sega Genesis)
Super Mario 64
Duke Nukem 3D
WarCraft II
Quake Multiplayer (My first taste of online deathmatch)
StarCraft
D&D
Diablo 2
Unreal Tournament
Half-Life
Team Fortress Classic (My first real taste of online team FPS)
Counterstrike 1.4
Tribes 2
Deus Ex
Homeworld
Neverwinter Nights
Battlefield 2
World of WarCraft
Battlefield 2142
Unreal Tournament III
COD4

All of the games I listed pretty much stuck out in my memory as important to me. My first console was a Genesis, then I moved on to the Nintendo 64 before becoming firmly entrenched as a primarily PC gamer from 1994 onwards. I'd say gaming is a big part of my life right now. Working during the day I look forward to unwinding with a few rounds of BF or COD4 with friends.

Damn, that game takes me back - my parents used to play it when I was a kid, never bothered learning how to play, I just made card houses on the carpet

"Initially exclusive to the GEnie online service, it opened in February 1993, and later that year won the first ever "Online Game of the Year" award from Computer Gaming World magazine. In 1994 it was offered in stores by Microprose."

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

In 1987(ish) a bunch of my nerdy friends and I made the 10 hour drive to chicago to play a multi-player mech-warrior type game.

It was set up in this room with about 10 pods that you sat in and they closed the cover. Unfortunately it was like $10/round which lasted all of about 5 minutes, so we only got to play a couple of times each.

Those 5 minutes consisted of me and my 4 friends trying to figure out how to drive mechs, while 5 other people who probably worked there wasted us over and over. Line graphics kind of like the old Star Wars X-wing arcade game. (except the panels were colored.)

When you got done, they gave you this printout of all of your stats telling you how badly you sucked.

I still get destroyed when I stomp around in a walker, but at least it's cheaper.

I loved Gauntlet. My neighbor has one tucked away in storage somewhere. It was like a WoW scroller.

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

For me Gauntlet 2 was where the fun was at - (maybe 15 years ago) I remember hearing that the game ended at level 200 and when I finally made it level 201 started. I remember feeling very disappointed because I like a definate end to a game to validate the time spent playing it. As opposed to now where I play BF2142 that really has no end

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

I dno, I've always prefered replay value in a game that I love, because once it's over you're like "aww dam, it's over, that was so much fun," the keyword being was. It's a reason online games have such an appeal, because the experience is always so different, there's always room for improvement, whereas when you finish a game (e.g. MGS, Hitman, Shadow of the Colossus, Assassin's Creed are some of the types of games I like) the experience is pretty much over. You can try the single player again on a harder level or something, and with maybe a slightly different approach (Hitman does this the best IMHO - the single player game with the highest replay value, because that perfect kill on every level is a huge challenge), it's not quite different enough, with the enemies mainly the same etc.

However, I do know what you mean by that. Like at the end of MGS2, I felt like I had just finished an amazing, epic adventure, same with Shadow of the Colossus and games like that (God of War is another example). It's kinda the whole "having your cake and eating it too," dilemma .....except with online games it's like a never-ending cake, but it's like more kinda satisfying when you finish a cake...(bla bla droning )...

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

There's way too many to remember all the names, but here's a few;

1. Diablo
2. Starcraft (and Brood War)
3. Diablo 2
4. Counter-strike
5. Call of Duty
6. Warcraft III (and Frozen Throne)
7. Dark Age of Camelot (best game ever.)
8. Shadowbane, World of Warcraft (they don't get separate spots, because they are terrible)
9. Battlefield 2
10. Battlefield 2142
11. Guild Wars
12. Mech Warrior (Battle Walkers were totally ripped from this game)
13. Wolfenstein
14. Cabela's Big Game Hunter (haha)
15. Terminal Velocity (very early gunship flying days)
16. Uprising

and, probably more.

Re: Old Games: How did you get here?

I'll have to date myself here!

1. Pong
2. Pinball (commadore)
3. C & C
4. War Craft
5. Doom
6. Warzone 2100
7. BF 1942
9. BF 2142

Did game programming while in the Navy on ship's combat computers for the fun of it.
When the VIC 20 first came out I made a few games for that computer but no longer do any programing.
