Re: Calling all commanders!

Agreed 100%, TechWar. Already, I'm looking back at how I commanded the round after you that night and seeing all the things I could've done a lot better, especially while perusing the thread in the tactics forum.

Thanks, everyone, for being patient with the n00b commanders. I'm sure you're all doing your best to help those of us trying our hand at commanding.

And if you're not, I'll find you. And make Reaper knife you.

Twice.

Re: Calling all commanders!

Well, I've just gotten my weekly commanding round in. How about the rest of you?

Also, for those who might not have noticed, there's another discussion thread up in the tactics forum about the assault on Camp Gibby. Keep the great posts coming!

Re: Calling all commanders!

I feel your pain on that one, Brit. That happened to me three rounds in a row the other night. Keep trying! Especially if your team is losing--people want to command a losing team as much as rats want to stay on a sinking ship.

Re: Calling all commanders!

I believe I am (hopefully) a decent commander. Due to the fact that my "mic" is actually a webcam, I can't really give orders verbally without outside interference. So you'll just have to trust me when I order you to rush into that meatgrinder.

I guess I could try to command as often as possible.

Remember fledgling commanders- BF2142 is NOT an RTS. In this game, the units talk back.

This is a very good point. Let's try to keep that in mind as we go forward with our commanding. The more you respect your squad leaders and their individual judgment, the more they will respect you and your strategic decisions.

Edit: New discussion thread up in the tactics forum! We're moving back to the European theater for a while and talking about Belgrade. Share those tactics we used while the second server was 24/7 Belgrade!

Re: Calling all commanders!

I had a pretty good experience commanding Fall of Berlin EU last night. Not the most challenging map to command, for certain, but the skill of my players ensured a decisive victory. I was quite nervous at the beginning, as before EU got fully organized and set up at the 3 major chokepoints, a horde of angry Asians came charging forth and took Crossroads almost before I had given out the first orders!

I made the decision that xroads was a lost cause, but my next sat-track revealed something even scarier. There were squads that had broken through past roadblock both to the north and to the south! Luckily, I had a couple of great squads with responsive SL's who responded to the threats quickly and efficiently, while the rest of the squads valiantly held back the encroaching PAC from Roadblock. With those who broke-through mopped up, my troops entrenched themselves in for the bitter fight that was to come, as the PAC threw themselves again and again at roadblock. A couple of times I saw an opportunity to take crossroads back, and would send one brave squad forth, however I didn't want to waste too many tickets, and so the PAC held crossroads until the end of the game.

I managed to get a 10-kill streak by orbitaling APCs and Walkers alone, which was pretty neat, and I'd like to thank all of the squads who quickly responded to my orders when it was necessary, but also took the initiative and were able to organize themselves into a solid defense without my help.

All-in-all it was a very good commanding experience that went from what seemed like it would be a quick defeat and ended up as a solid victory!

One thing I did notice -- as basically the entire PAC team was east of the buildings between roadblock and crossroads for the entire match, I didn't end up doing very much spotting. Only when they had broken through was I calling them out, and even then, my excellent squads usually already had eyes on them! So, my question is -- at big chokepoints is it still necessary to be right-clicking on the mass of red on the other side, or was I doing the right thing in this case?

Re: Calling all commanders!

I usually pick the squad closest and inform the SL on Voip that there are x amount of contacts to thier E, W, S, or whatever. They usually verify that they know or thank me.

Re: Calling all commanders!

I'm afraid I have to turn this challenge down, I am not the guy with the best tactics, leadership skills, or authority voice.....

Re: Calling all commanders!

I got my comm time in last week for a few hours, and it did not occur to me at the time to report SL's for not following orders. I understand the occasional page down for some reason, but there were some who just didnt listen at all.

None were TG squads btw, so kudos to you all.

I don't know what everyone else does, but if there's a gigantic sea of red in one location, I generally just give an update either over all-comms or to the squads closest. I find that I'm too slow with the right-clicking to really catch much with it.

Great job with the commanding, guys! Keep it up!

I tend to spot at choke points. If your squads are pushing through It is a huge advantage for them to know where enemy troops are (obviously ). Even when defending I will spot some to give squads a visual idea of what's going on. Also I/they can be quicker at spotting and eliminating enemy pushes. I dunno maybe I shouldn't spot but I do and I'll take some convincing to make me stop.

Re: Calling all commanders!

I haven't gotten my Commanding time in yet, I saw so many people on a roll I figure I'll let em at it!

But a quick tip for all new commanders:

Right Click some where on the map and then click spot. If there is an enemy with 25 meters you'll spot him out!!!

Always, always, always spot! Even if you aren't sure, it never hurts to keep it rolling!!

Re: Calling all commanders!

I command nightly, generally 5 or more games. I'm loving it! And so far I've had only one complaint I talk to much giving intel on unit movements LOL

General statistics
...
Hours per day 1.69
Rounds per day 7.8

Time statistics
Total played time 37:02:34
Squad-Member 19:37:52
Squad-Leader 05:27:17
LoneWolf 01:22:21
Commander 10:35:04

I've actually played as a commander 25% of the time. Last night I got 2 stages of commander excellence badge in 1 round which equated to two rank promotions in one round. WOOT unlocks, NOW if there was a way to compare my progress with other new gamers to know if i'm doing descent in getting promotions ect. So yeah if one of you guys experienced guys care to tell me if sgm gold at 37 hours of play is average below average or what, it'd be awesome :P
