Never came across it but BF2142 was supposed to have some servers restricted to the first 10 or so ranks. This sounds similar.

Re: Battlefield: Heroes anyone?
For what it's worth, I thought Crysis single player was great (it helped that I have the graphic and audio hardware to appreciate it completely), but multiplayer was a sack of crap.
Power Struggle was one of the worst executed ideas I'd ever seen in a multiplayer game.

Re: Battlefield: Heroes anyone?
Linky here to Crysis' first SDK for mods.
There has been hope of a mod for Crysis for some time now that might be able to appeal to the TG audience. After all, it is a great game, just doesn't has the right mechanics to appeal to TG's teamwork style of play. (Haven't got the game, but palyed through it for a bit on single player, and got a little taste of online).

Re: Battlefield: Heroes anyone?
You struggle. For power. With a lot of horse sweat and grunting.
I believe the main problem with Crysis is that I should be able to afford and build a computer with a stable version of Vista that does the game justice when I get back in country some time in late 2009.

Re: Battlefield: Heroes anyone?
Actually Crysis multiplayer itself was just laughably flawed.
So you have all these 'modern' guns, and for the most part they're pretty lethal. A few bullets and you're down. ONLY - if you have your suit in armor mode, you can soak an entire magazine. Shotgun blasts to the face. There was also no stamina limit or anything, so basically 'gunfights' were people jumping around in circles spraying bullets everywhere, reloading, spraying more, until one guy ran out of energy for armor mode. This had the side effect of making every other mode laughably useless and simply utilitarian (except cloak mode, which had no use OR utility in multiplayer). The game also had an 'XP' system, so you could 'buy' more advanced guns, more weapons, weapon mods, etc. This caused the 'counter-strike effect', where the losing team loses HARDER, and the winning team is now running around with nuclear-powered bunker-busting miniguns while you just have a pistol and a single grenade. Then you die, over and over. Power Struggle had you capture 'power plants' and 'weapons factories'. When you got enough energy, your team could buy experimental weapons to destroy the enemy HQ. Naturally, this compounded the original problem. Now in addition to the winning team having nuclear-powered bunker-busting miniguns, they were cruising around in fusion-powered star destroyers firing planet-crushing doom lasers. Actually I'm exaggerating. The winning team would get a hand-held nuclear missile. No joke. A nuke. And the other team has a flashbang and a submachine gun. It had a lot of potential, but ended up just being hilariously crap all-around (all of multiplayer, not just PS).
