Getting into this game...

I've been playing 2142 for a couple months, and really enjoying it. I've maxed out the assault kit and I'm now working on recon. However, after visiting a couple sites, I'd like to do more with the game. I'm not entirely sure what TG can offer, but I'd like to join a Clan, and play competitively with other people regularly. Is TG the place to set this up?

Thanks a lot.

It is and it isn't. There is a lot of essential reading around. Basically TG isn't a clan it's a community. By registering here you qualify to were the |TG| tags. The next step would be to look into becoming an SM ($9 a month or $80 a year). That gives you a reserved slot on ALL TG servers, web space, email etc. It also gives you the ability to join an IHS. These are the guys who play competitively in leagues such as BFCL. At the moment the three IHS competing are the 3rd, 9th and 21st. The 11th-AIR are looking into it too (look left and at the wiki link in my sig). What you can also play in is TG-intenal scrims non-SMs can play but SM get priority. We usually have a scrim about once a month but there is a series of ones every Sunday starting now (you can play in this and the throw down this Friday). Getting on TS is pretty important too...

Re: Getting into this game...

Thanks a lot for the info. I can't really afford to pay $80 right now, so is my best option to put on the |TG| tag and play in the TG scrims? Where can I find information about when those are? I can get on Teamspeak if that's what TS is.

Yeah, TS stands for TeamSpeak. It's dead easy to set up, and really helps. TG is like a higher level of gaming. It offers so much more than pubic play, and once you play TG, you'll never play anywhere else.

Welcome to TacticalGamer!

Re: Getting into this game...

Ok awesome, I'll set it up.

Another question I have is which 2142 servers are TG ones? I have favorited the TG Conquest one (I think that's what it's called). Are there others?

Re: Getting into this game...

On a side note:

Glad that you're enjoying yourself and want to get more serious about the game.

You mentioned you want to do some scrims and that you are working on your recon kit. Couple things:

1) Recon definitely has its place, but I think you'll find it's a limited role on our servers. I would seriously consider joining some TG squads and see what our teamwork is all about. You'll usually help your squad(and team) out a lot more as Engineer or Support than Recon. (it's your game, though, so do what you like).*edit* NOTE: I AM NOT BASHING RECON. Definitely has very valuable uses.

2) On that note, please take the time to read the SOPs (I linked some info in your greeting post). When you join a TG squad, you should ask what kit the squad leader would like you to use. (pretty darned rare to hear 'recon'.)

If you enjoy teamwork and are looking to develop your skill, then you are definitely in the right place. Without being a supporting member, you will find it difficult to get into any real competition (although every round is pretty competetive around here). Remember, you don't have to pony up the yearly cost all at once. $9 a month is a pittance (one less trip to McDonalds...or one less 12-pack a month). It will ensure that you have a spot on our servers as well as allow you to get into an IHS.

Good luck.

Re: Getting into this game...

About the whole recon thing, I don't actually play recon that much. I really like being an assault medic, and that's what I usually play, it's just that when I go up another rank I spend my new unlock on a recon item. I usually only use recon for sniping fun on other servers. Are assault medics needed in most games? It seems like they would be. Anyays, that's what I'll probably play.

I'll think about becoming a supporting member. I'd like to try out playing on TG servers more before I make a decision though.

Oh, and one more thing. I got TS and logged in and everything, and there's a few people in there, but nobody's talking. Are they using the in-game VoIP, or are they just being silent? Also, how can I tell where everyones playing?

Thanks again. This has been really helpful.

Re: Getting into this game...

Definitely no pressure to be supporting member. Take you time and get acquainted.

As far as Teamspeak...you (and I) were playing Monday morning, which isn't one of our peak times. Check it out most any evening, and it'll be different.

A lot of players use VOIP in-game and chat between rounds in TS.

As far as finding people, just send out some buddy requests to TG members . I am -> BBgun. (with the period)
Then you'll be able to see who's on..and where.

And yes, assault medic is probably most common request, with support and engineer close behind.

Re: Getting into this game...

Before this thread turns into another recon vs assault thread, let me just say that each kit has its place on the battlefield and it will be up to you to decide if you think you will be able to contribute with that given kit. However, you must also weigh your kit choice against the needs of the squad leader and team.

With that out of the way, it is very safe to say that the assault kit will usually be the prevalent kit on the battlefield on infantry maps. The engineer kit will be the prevalent kit on armor maps. The support and recon/sniper kits each has a place, but they won't be in such high demand and too many of either can have a truly devastating effect on your team.

Re: Getting into this game...

Ok, sounds awesome. I'll try to log on tonight and find some other TG people. The servers used are the two ones labeled Tactical Gamer Conquest/Titan, right? I'll send you a friend request the next time I log on.

Welcome to TG. First make sure you are in the Battlefield 2142 channel. During games its polite to keep the chatter to a minimum. You can announce yourself in channel. Post round is when the yakking begins. Ask for squad invites.
Most of the time the conquest server is played. The second server is mostly empty.

Re: Getting into this game...

Ok cool. I understand pretty much everything now. I just need to log onto the Conquest server, ask for a squad invite in TS, play the game with talking through the in-game voice system, then chat between games on TS.

A very good question, and you'll find that people here at Tactical Gamer are more than willing to help with any question you will ever have.

You will find that Battlefield 2142 has two distinct types of maps: Infantry and Armor.

Infantry maps are the close tight maps. Much like Camp Gibraltar and Cerbere Landing. (These maps generally have little to no armor and victory is won by infantry tactics.)

Armor maps are the big sprawling maps. Suez Canal, and Highway Tampa are great examples of an armor map. (These maps generally tend to have an abundant ammount of armor, and victory usually relies on managing that armor.)

Hence they have been dubbed 'Infantry' or 'Armor' maps. Hope this helps.
