My suggestions for a headset is buy what your budget can afford, but make sure it is comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I went super cheap Cyber Acoustics (under $20) and it works fine.
As for the X-Box controller, don't...the mouse is way more precise, and in BF2142 being precise is often the difference in surviving the one on ones.
You might want to try playing the single player game for a bit just until you get used to the mouse and keyboard, if you turn down the AI the bots will generally just try to charge you with their knifes half the time; giving you lots of shooting targets without getting killed yourself. Cerbere landing is a good AI map because you get into the action right away, that's the one I practiced on.

Re: Dedicated "Learn TG" Squad
I will echo the dont use a controller sentement. I am not sure it works to be honest.
It will take a bit of practice to get used to looking around with the mouse. Once you do you should be able to be MUCH more effective than using a thumb controller for the same purpose.
You should spend some time on VOIP with someone to help you set up your controls properly.
At first, you will find using the mouse scroll wheel to select items fine. But soon you will want to have quicker access to specific items.
I have my gun mapped to a mouse thumb key, my med hub to another mouse thumb key, and my defib to my middle mouse button.
I have rockets mapped to F, grenades mapped to g, and pickup kit mapped to h.

Thanks for all the encouraging responses everyone, just thought I'd give you a little update on where I'm at with the game after taking your advice.
Firstly, you were all totally right about the mouse versus controller thing, I spent some time fiddling with the sensitivity yesterday and turning it down seemed to have a positive effect on my ability to shoot.
I also went and played a few single player rounds on most of the maps, the others I intend to go look at this afternoon. I've found with all shooters that learning the maps can be half the battle, just the general layout and where the points are makes the world of difference.
Things I have learned from these single-player jaunts:
a) I cannot drive a walker. Totally useless at it, every time I think I've got the thing pointed in the right direction I end up going in another.
b) I've only really used the assault kit and find it much easier to shoot single-shot rather than fully auto. Do any of the weapons do a three round burst?
c)Keys, so many keys!
To whoever suggested putting stuff on all these additional mouse buttons I have, thank you, I would never of thought of that and will be a great help as I'm still fumbling over the keys a bit. I'm not sure if this is down to my keyboard, which I may replace tomorrow too as I've disliked it from day one. Or whether its my chubby digits at fault.
Will be picking up a headset tomorrow so will also spend some time reading up on TeamSpeak as that seems to be the VoIP software of choice around here.
Finally, could anyone point me in the direction of a good explanation/ FAQ on the upgrades system, I'm totally lost with that one right now.
Thanks again for your time,
chairlord.

The thing about the walker is that your legs and torso are independent, your WSAD keys control your legs and your mouse controls your torso. Like most things it just takes practice, try single player EU Suez Canal, or PAC Cerbere Landing for single player walker practice.
b) I've only really used the assault kit and find it much easier to shoot single-shot rather than fully auto. Do any of the weapons do a three round burst?
Nope, most rifles will switch between full auto and single shot. Short bursts on full auto is generally the way to go with most weapons (Baur being the one exception). The further the target is away from you the shorter your burst have to be.
c)Keys, so many keys!
Hitting the right key will become second nature with a little bit of time.

First, just like to say hello and welcome.
Second, I was quite like you when I got BF2142 because this was pretty much my first and only PC game.
Please don't get the Xbox controller, there are loads of people who play FPS's on PCs just so that they can use a mouse, because it's so much more accurate and instinctive.
I've played this game for about a year, and I was never the best with a walker either. Firstly, give yourself time to learn, and even if you don't get it, don't worry, we are all good at some things and worse at other things, which is why there are different roles so that you can experiment and see what fits you best (unless you're Lyra, in which case you just rule at everything).
The assault kit is basically the most used kit at TG. There's no 3-round burst, but unlike Specterr, I think short (incidentally I do 3-rounds) bursts with the Baur (which is a gun you haven't unlocked yet) is the best, but bursts with most assault guns is the way to use it.
I suggest using you're mouse buttons to do VOIP, but that's just me, because I can keep it pressed down for as long as I want without sacrificing one of my fingers on my left hand to continually press it down, plus I think it works as communicating is one of the most important things for me. The buttons along the top (the numbers) work best for me in terms of switching. They can get a little fiddly at times, but I manage, and after a while anything can just get instinctive.
I remember when I 1st started playing 2142 I wrote down all the keys I couldn't remember, and refer to the sheet of paper in front of me. It got drilled into my head after about a week or so, now when I look down at the keys, I don't see WASD, I see forward, left, back, right. I don't see 123456, I see knife, pistol, Primary gun, defib, rockets. Soon enough it will get drilled in, give it a little time.
Also, in terms of a headset, Reaper said USB but I prefer plug-and-play, just because of that. No software, no safe device removal, just in and out easily and quickly, no problems.
I got these ones, and I can never stop going on about how amazing they are, especially for the price. Even if you don't like that headset, I suggest using that site to research.
Also, what mouse do you have?
P.S. I recommend starting a thread to continue this conversation, because we're kinda hijacking Azura's thread here, and he'll knife me if I push him too far (and I'm not even playing 2142 for the next few months or so, but he'll find a way to knife me anyway ), plus I think you'll get more responses that way on your questions.

Dude, your videos on youtube are what made me want to click the Create/Custom button instead of Join when picking squads. It'd be an honor to actually squad up with the man who inspired me to take that step up!

Re: Dedicated "Learn TG" Squad
Yep, I came to TG after seeing Silver's videos too , man, I'm so glad I went searching for random BF2142 videos on Youtube, and even happier that I took a few minutes out of my day to visit the site...
