Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Folks here are giving very good advice. I want to pass on a little moral support.
TG is a hard server to learn on, so please don't get discouraged. I routinely get pwnd on our beloved server, and occasionally I have to go to another server and do some pwning before I remember that I do know how to play pretty well.

So much hate on wireless mice =( I use Logitech's G7 and have found it better than most wired mice I've used. Batteries are hot-swappable, with some practice you can swap the drained battery for a fresh one in 1.5 seconds, and you have plenty of warning when it's going to happen so you can do it when it's safe. It's easy to swap batteries mid dogfight in a gunship, and still come out on top. It also has on the fly DPI switching if you so desire to have them programmed onto buttons as such (I only use for Gunship and Rorshe). Plus you have 6 customizable buttons (4 if you use DPI switching). As for signal loss. I've had the mouse for 8 months now, never had any kind of signal loss or hang or delay the whole time. For chairlord If you ever see me leading a squad your team on TG hop in and let me know that you're new and want to learn some of the more complicated mechanics, and I'll gladly use (abuse?) my ability to boss people around to set up a decent learning environment for ya. I've taught all my friends that started after me how to use Walkers and Tanks and such, granted I'm not the best at everything, but anybody can teach the basics if they realize what the basics are! I remember once a few months ago, I took a squad under my wing on a pub server (I think it was a DIG server). I taught them how to work together, and taught them how to effectively defend a corrider without grenade spamming. Needless to say, I got auto-balanced to the other team soon after they got the hang of it, and couldn't for the life of me take down the very defense I created, even with a squad backing me up. =(

Aaahhhh.....the role reversal!
![]() There's nothing like getting killed by someone you "trained". I did the same thing with a friend, I showed him how to play and on one of the first servers we played on opposite teams he took my tags! Good fun though, didn't take too long after to get his! ![]() |

Now Now jazy2 are you still in a huff because I got your tags first, I thought we were past all that.....
hehe.Set your pc up beside a mate that has been playing for a while like me and jazy2 and you will pick a lot of things up, it's great when you can see your mates monitor and ask questions directly and so on, it has really helped me out. I have an optical wired mouse and I love it, it's a basic 3 button mouse and works a treat, my next purchase will be a wired laser mouse G7 or G5. I also use a logitech G15 keyboard which has 18 extra keys on the left hand side and I have mapped the vehicle views to G12 and G09 and the "zoom minimap" to G15, so now all I have to do is move my pinky to the left to change them, instead of having to take my hand off the mouse to press a key, works a treat. It also has a nifty LCD display on the keyboard which tells you your score, dog tags, ping etc while playing a round and tells you your score when the game is loaded and how many points to your next promotion/unlock. You can also plug your mouse into the keyboards usb ports and run the cord underneath it through groves in the base of the board, it prevents your cable from becoming an issue while playing, cable getting caught etc. I have played on the TG servers and learnt alot when i was there but my pc cannot handle the large player maps so I dont visit as often due to lag issues, but I have also played on a public server with bigeye101(SL) and jazy2 and to be honest it was one of those times when I got one of the best scores in a round and it was great fun, and as others have said, get yourself the defib, it is essential.....tickets....get your tickets here!!

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Thanks for all the advice and tips you've all handed out, just thought I'd give you a quick heads-up as to how I'm getting along.
Firstly, I only managed to get into Azura's "Learn TG" squad one evening last week but it was one of the most enjoyable times I've had online yet so thanks to Azura for that. I've also tried to play on the TG server a few times, and the one entire round I played was a blast, but I always end up in some random guys squad who's not giving any orders so I can find it a bit confusing. But it's my own fault for not introducing myself to the kind people here that have offered to show me the ropes, so that's my mission for this week. To get on the TG servers and do me some learnin'! The week or so of play has really helped too, feeling much more comfortable with the feel of the keyboard whilst playing, although I really need to find an alternate key for prone, as Z isn't working for me. Also switching back to my old corded optical has helped no end, although I'm getting the "Problem with your connection message" a lot. Working to resolve that one, and will check out the technical forum as I'm sure I'll find the answer in there. The main thing I picked up from Learn TG was to just slow down, pick my spot and then move. This has helped no end in stopping the "where the heck did I just get shot from?" syndrome I was experiencing before. One last question though, just earned my fifth unlock. I've already unlocked the defib, the advanced med hub, grenades and extra sprint. What should I go for next? I'm erring towards sprint recovery as it'll be universal across classes but looking for your thoughts here. Finally, a thank you to all those (few so far) people I've played with to date, I'm really looking forward to doing that more this week. |

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Azura is a very good teacher and I have no doubt you will learn from him. I run "TG Fun" squads from time to time which are a bit lighter on the teaching but people still seem to glean something from it. (I can't figure it out... people also say I'm a good squad leader LOL) If you're looking for squads where people talk, most squads headed up by TG members will have VOIP going in some form.
Have fun and see you on the battlefield! ![]()

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
I would definitely have to say go for sprint recovery as your next unlock. One thing I might suggest as well, once you've started to get the hang of the game a little better -- LIGHT ARMOR! I always wear light armor, and feel as though it helps me to no end.
One recommendation I have about getting into squads. Don't immediately jump into the first squads you see. Before the round starts, hold down the tab key, and see which TG members are on your side. Many of our regular squad leaders will wait 30-45 seconds before starting a squad to make sure that the people who join their squad are people looking for a teamwork-oriented squad. Everybody, from the newest pubbie right up to IHS members who have been here for years has to join a squad within 90 seconds or suffer a swift kick to the login screen. Oh, and never get in an FAV with Lorax. |

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Try X for prone firstly, I'm not sure if that's default anything else since I decided to customize all the buttons myself when I first started playing. I find X easy and it just takes your index finger down for a second, although for 'Z', you either have to use your ring finger, which can just be annoying since naturally because we don't use our ring finger as much as our index, we don't have as much proper control over it. Also, I'd say go sprint recovery as well,a although I'm tempted to confuse you and say consider the Herzog shotgun attachment for Assault, mainly because I think working your way towards the rockets should be your next agenda, however, considering everything I think you want to get a better grip of the mechanics before you start experimenting with the rockets,s O I'd say the sprint unlocks are probably the best thing to go for next. After the other 2 (or is it 3? Damn its been a while...pistol clip and extra grenade isn't it...?) I'd say you can then start building up to the rockets.
Also, try and do some kit switching (I believe default is 'G' when standing over those backpack things on the floor where a disappearing corpse is) to get more experience with other guns and kits. If you're not sure what you have in your virtual hands, and your squad isn't in any huge immediate danger, just ask about what you have and try and describe the gun. However, I also don't suggest doing this if you're in the middle of a firefight.

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
The advice you got was great. Buddy list TG players and others who are good and fun and then look for them. I am rarely a SL because I'm still new so I can tell you the secret to joining a good squad: someone you know, TG members, or the back up is to join a squad and "test" the SL. You say" "Mic check," "what's the plan," "what kit" - based on the answers or no answers you might want to select another squad.
