2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
So my first play with anyone from TG will be this evening as part of Azura's "Learn TG" group, but as recommended I've have been playing a bit both in single player and online beforehand to get a feel for the game.
As with most new players I have some questions, and some general observations I'd like to I'd share. I'll start with the questions;
1) I've taken some advice and starting assigning some functions to the two extra back/forward keys I have on my mouse, switching the two most difficult (for me), keys to the buttons, for crouch and prone respectively. But is there any way to make crouch a toggle function?
2) Just got my very first unlock, went for the defibrillator as it seems to be the most suggested from the threads I've read, a good choice?
3) Played a Titan game and thank god my SL at the time laid a beacon on the enemy Titan as we attacked it, because the first time I couldn't get the APC pod to land on the thing. Is this just practice or should I just give up now?!
Observations:
I knew that moving to PC games, especially to a well established games, would probably be a step up in difficulty from the console scene, but blimey I am currently awful. Truly, I've never played a game online, even when starting out where I can play a 40 minute match and not get one single kill, not one! What a loser...
I have come to the conclusion that my mouse is bad too, now this is no excuse I know, but it's a cheap wireless number that seems to occasionally really lose signal and just stop working or skip altogether. I'm thinking about switching back to my old corded optical, but the trade off will be losing those handy two extra buttons, but it must be done. Essentially I will be getting a new mouse this week so should I stick to wired or find a better wireless one, suggestions anyone? (Damn, that should be in questions...)
The sound setting on my computer needs fiddling with as I nearly blew my own ears clean off when testing out the new headset I bought. Went for a fairly solid Philips number to start with, would have got the Sennheisers someone recommended but would've had to order them in and need a headset for today really. They sound pretty good though, when they're not trying to deafen me anyway.
I'm still not entirely sure on auto fire, still erring towards single-shot fire and some light forefinger RSI.
Finally, Earth, Wind & Fire are totally, totally funky, this is completely unrelated to TG, BF2142, or anything else for that matter, but I thought you should know.
Thanks for you time,
chairlord.

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
No, you ca not toggle crouch. I would suggest trying your VoIP key as one of the unused buttons on your mouse, really makes things easier for me...
The defib is the most important unlock in the game, hands down.
Practice. It starts by ensuring you are looking in the right position before you launch.
slow down and stick with your squad. Take your time, relax and don't get caught up by the noise, focus on your task at hand and don't overthink it. You'll settle down and start getting kills.
I like my wired G5 mouse.
Turn most of the game volumes down except for VoIP, keep that maxed. Fiddle around until you find the right volume.
short, controlled bursts work wonders, especially with the Krylov and Scarr.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
When I started playing in September I felt pretty overwhelmed and got my ass handed to me for a week or so. Lucky for me, I had my own version of a "Learn TG"-esque squad, but it wasn't TG. My friends walked me through some of the basics, and forced me to mess things up terribly for about 2 weeks until I was decent at everything. As an idea of how hard they were pushing me... I went from only playing MMORPGs for 5 years straight, to picking up BF2142 and having the confidence and ability take a Walker, Tank or Transport, and not nub it up, and that wasn't due to any personal skill trust me...
It helps to have others around you who can show you the ropes in game. I think you'll be fine, and I look forward to either squading up with ya, or turning a corner and unloading some Baur rounds into the back of your skull. =D

Glad you enjoyed it....I think. Keep practicing and joining up with squads. We will help you anytime we can. If you want some one-on-one practice, I can offer some(although I am not the best) and I am sure someone else will to. It just takes time. Stick with it!

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
crouch to thumb button is a poor choice in the long run. When you press and hold crouch, your put too much force on your mouse and you can not aim as well. You are often aiming while crouched.
Many put thier voip key to a mouse button. I prefer putting my main Assualt Rifle to that button. I use the baur alot in single shot mode so this works quite well for me.

Everyone sucks to begin with. Even the fella that can run a hundred meters in ten seconds had to crawl before he walked.
Be patient and work with TG squads. If you see me on the server (TG-3rd Zhohar), send a message in in global chat and I'll send you a squad invite

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
I was thinking about doing the same thing but came to the same conclusion, for me it feels awkward.
My brother is a firm believer in crouching but in my experiences more often than not I'm getting the kill against people who start crouching when we first "meet" for lack of a better term. Please note that I use the Voss, which for it's high fire rate precision isn't as important when you're at close to medium range. Nevertheless I feel that if my focus more on getting controlled burst shots rather then having to hit another button I'll be more effective.

3) On the APC, to the right of your reticle, you'll see an indicator that shows you if you're within range of the Titan or not. When you get in range, you'll hear a sound like something charging up power. A whine increasing in pitch, with some hissing, and the little notch on the indicator is high. That means you're in range to pod in, and I believe it will automatically orient you towards the Titan. (correct me if I'm wrong here fellas) If your APC drives out of range, you'll hear a down-pitched power-down sound, and your APC's pods now boost out with much less power. The indicator notch will also be set to a low level.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: I bound vehicle active defense, to one of my thumb buttons, and it's worked well for me. Don't have anything on the other one though. Of course, it's not really a thumb-button since I'm a lefty. Cursed lack of lefty mice really irritates me.

Like others have said, there is an indicator to the right of the crosshair when driving an APC, when the dotted bar is at the top is when you can reach the titans, otherwise the pod doesn't have enough 'ooomph' to reach the titan. It should auto-lock on to the nearest titan as well.
Hope this helps and welcome to TG!

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Spend some time in an empty server, practice crouching and shooting.....it has improved my killing ability greatly. I can;t help with the key settings as I have the nostromo pad.....yet another aid for my inept abilities!

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Or you can do it offline, in IA. I've heard of files that will unlock everything for you in IA, though of course you'll have to change everything back to play online.

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Good advice from everyone, my only suggestion is if your looking for a good mouse I would recommend a logitech G5...it has a left/right switch on the middle mouse wheel which I have assigned to primary weapon (3) and primary unlock (6 I think), this allows fast weapon changes and quick changing from single to auto fire. It also comes with a thumb button which I assigned to VOIP. Lastly it has customizable weights which allows you to make it the perfect feel, if you combine it with an good optical mouse pad (I use an ALLSOP) your accuracy should improve greatly (mine did).

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
Yay, I love answering questions for new people!!! It makes me feel I have some knowledge to pass on
.
Just like to reference you to this post I made a while back, but I think this can help all newcomers to the game.
I had, and still had when I stopped playing, a problem with crouching, which I solved by never crouching, which sucks. I tried using one of my side buttons for crouching as well, which I'll persevere on as well when I get back to playing, but I think that because prone is toggle...able(?) you can leave that as a button like X, and have the other side button for VoIP as Lorax suggested, and me in the other thread, but again, whatever suits you best.
Simple answer is yes, I could go into a 500 word analysis if you wanted me to though...
That's not a simple skill for the first few times. Like everything else in the game, you'll get this with practice.
Yh, I had the same experience, it's normal, especially when moving from consoles where the AI bots are so boring and unimaginative, but again, give yourself some time.
Cheap yet excellent mouse suggestions: Here and here.
More expensive mouse suggestions: Here and this little article and have a look around here.
Get a laser mouse preferably. Wireless is terrible for gaming. Also, get a mouse that has 5 buttons (2 buttons on top, scroll wheel, and 2 thumb buttons) and preferably on-the-fly dpi. I do suggest getting a new mouse, because both of the mice you have seem to be inadequate. I was also playing with a ball mouse for about a year...I got a new one at Christmas, and I've been playing this game since February (of last year), and have found it much better to game with this mouse. That gamespot article also gives you a good information on mice in general.
I'm not sure about the quality of Philips headsets, never heard anything about them...as long as they're not heavy/bulky and the sound quality is good enough, and people can read you fine on the other end, you don't need anything much more IMHO.
Don't worry, however you start off, you will get better. We were all at the stage when we were starting out, and just couldn't hit anything, but just keep practicing and you'll get there soon enough.

Re: 2142: First few days, first few thoughts...
defibs is the classic first unlock for a TG guy
when reviving run up, dive, zap, immediatly get up, continue running stepping over them as such, this procedure is the safest way
specialise in keeping the squad leader alive, keep track of where he is with the minimap and the big green thing over his head
thats the fast track way

lots of good advice and tips from everyone already, not much more i could add that wouldnt be covering similar ground, however your statement above is not correct.
i currently have a Logitech MX320 mouse. optical with cord. left click/right click, mouse wheel/tilt/click and 2 thumb buttons. i flat out refuse to play with a wireless keyboard and or mouse. its a solid all around mouse, not really expensive, optical and has the extra buttons, plus its wired.and your very flesh shall be a great poem
