What's next?

I'm not saying that 2142 is going anywhere any time soon, nor is my interest starting to wane, quite the opposite in fact. Nevertheless I'm wondering if there is anything on the horizon FPS wise that you all are looking forward to.

I'm not sure what EA has in mind expansion wise but I'm wondering if you all have idea's what game you'll all be headed off to next.

Re: What's next?

BF3 will hopefully be the next big thing. Scheduled for late 2008 release earliest from what i've seen.

Re: What's next?

Knowing myself, chances are I'll stick to 2142 for the years to come.

I tried several squad-based and strategy-based FPSes but none of them sport the ease of use and intuitiveness of BF2142. Other games have a clunky, hard to use comms menu, or have the VoIP hierarchy badly set up, or place responsibility on a single person so much that his doing a bad job instantly kills the rest of the team.

And I look at Battlefield 3, which is likely to be shaped in much the same way as BF2 and BF2142, except you get some updated graphics and maps - but in the end, as far as I see it, it'll be the same damn thing: APCs, tanks, jets, n00bs, and the "Karkand/Gib" map that everyone will wh0re 'till the end of time and of which half of the servers will turn into a 24/7 layout.

To be honest, I don't want to let go of Titan mode. I like variety in the manner of play. Conquest is fun for a while, and then I want to try something else. It was something that games like Unreal Tournament brought nicely since there were so many modes of play, you didn't really see one "too much".

Re: What's next?

I'm looking forward to BF3. My best case scenario would be an updated version of BF2142:
- updated graphics
- different maps
- more variation among the basic scheme of vehicles (ie. three different kinds of buggies -- one faster, one has four seats, one has better firepower, etc)
- a longer unlock system (ie. same gaps between levels but more ranks. I miss hearing "Soldier, you deserve a promotion!")
- more "useless" unlocks -- items that are very specific to a situation (ie. like the support shield for titan hallways)
- weapon modifications (aesthetics and performance)
- ability to set up a type of server (ie. infantry only)
- more voices (PAC SM "Need an EMP strike" comes to mind )

... that's a bit offtopic but I really hope DICE doesn't botch BF3.

Re: What's next?

I tried TF but while being very fun for 2 months there wasnt really any room for "creative" strategies and uncommon teamwork. I tried FFoW but was disgusted with it. It might really come down to BF3 being the next big thing

In the near future there will come a small bit of a fresh wind to 2142 - but I cannot tell you more or IŽd have to singlehandly shot everyone of you.

There is no valid evidence that BF3 is in production at all, unless you meant Battlefield Heroes.

Yeah TF2 is fun for some quick action. FFOW is good, but just not finished yet. It might become better after some patches.

You are right, there are only rumours. But making and releasing BF3 will probably happen sooner or later, EA's shareholders wants more money.

Battlefield has a lot of potential. EA could take up to "the next level" with a semi-persistent campaign, actually introducing something of a learning curve, and designing the game so the 'TG way' of playing is actually pretty necessary on most servers. Think Planetside.

Sadly, because it's EA, this will never happen. The only 'best' thing I can really see happening with BF3 is actually getting a new engine (honestly, the current engine is terrible ).

If I remember correctly, the leaked info/rumor said BF3 would be based in modern times. I doubt they'd completely get rid of a game mode like Titan which has such a huge following. They'll most likely make something like command centers. Won't be mobile, but you can infilitrate the command center and destroy their coms system or something.

Or maybe have maps that are islands, with battleships that can bombard the islands?

Or maybe it'll be modern era, but slightly futuristic and just keep the Titan?

All possibilities, I doubt any of them will happen =(.

Holy crap, Lyra! You just made my day! That's an awesome find! I thought people had been saying that 1.4 was the last patch for 2142! I'm so happy I could cry!
