Duty: A 2142 Story

I like 2142, and I like writing. I was bored, so I decided to combine two of my interests. I hope you enjoy.

Duty

I peered down the sight of my gun, aiming carefully at my target. Then I pulled on the trigger, letting a short burst of fire explode from my Voss. My target, a broken EMP grenade perched on a garbage container, crumpled and flew backwards. I smiled, happy with my shooting. Around me, the other soldiers in my squad, the 23rd Attack Force, were also messing around. Everyone was bored. We had been told that our location of occupation, a small refuge and training camp in northern Africa, would be a hot spot for intense combat. So far, the most intense thing that had taken place at Camp Gibraltar was a card game.

I stood up, stretching my legs, with the intent of grabbing another shooting target. However, as I was beginning to stride across the dry sand towards the supply building, I heard something I didn’t expect.

“Enemy infantry spotted!”

I blinked in surprise, and turned around. My comrades were all having similar reactions. Everyone was looking around in confusion. Then the warning came again, out of the earpiece in my helmet,

“Enemy infantry spotted!”

This time there was more of an effect. Our squad leader, realizing that finally, something must actually be happening, stood up, calling into his radio,

“Orders, sir?”

The commander answered quickly. He explained that there was a large PAC attack force coming in from the harbor to the north. We needed to group up and make our way up there fast, or the entire camp could be lost to the enemy forces. As soon as he was finished talking, squad leader began to run in the direction of the harbor. We were startled, but soon began to follow. Everything was happening so fast.

As we ran through the central camp, I was simply following in a daze. I was completely overwhelmed with the prospect of actual combat. What if I was shot? However, as we passed through the gateway into Camp Gibraltar’s toll station, I came to my senses. I remembered my training, and quickly checked my weapons. Two frag grenades were nestled safely on my belt, my Voss was slung across my back, and my trusty defibrillator was stuck out the back of my pack. I pulled this last item out, and stuck it into my belt as well. Then I pulled out my Voss. The light machine gun felt good in my hands as I ran across the expanse of the toll station, and out onto the train tracks that lay beyond.

We passed the train tracks, and I immediately saw my first combat. Far away, down at the ramp at the end of the dock, enemy PAC soldiers were running up, attempting to get into the cover of the buildings that lined the road. Friendly EU soldiers were defending these very buildings, shooting out from the windows, hucking grenades from the doorways, and firing rockets from the roof. The battle seemed to be going well for our side, as the PAC soldiers were struggling to make it up the ramp. Our viewing of this brutal scene was interrupted by squad leader gesturing for us to follow. We ran away from our spot at the end of the road, and went over to the first of the buildings on the right.

From there, squad leader explained that we were to make our way cautiously down the side of the harbor, keeping in the cover of the buildings. He wished us good luck, then turned the corner. We filed around behind him, I second to the last. I was expecting to be shot full of bullets the minute we rounded the corner, but luckily I was wrong. There were no PAC soldiers in sight. It seemed we were lucky. We began our march down the side of the harbor, each of us surveying the expanse of sand to our right for enemy men.
We were feeling confident, so once we reached the end of the first building, we decided to go on to the next one. All was well, until we were passing a staircase. At first I didn’t realize what was happening, but then Amery hit the ground. There was a shout, a burst of gunfire, and an explosion. A second later the dust cleared, and I could see Amery’s body on the ground. My training kicked in, and I pulled my defibrillator out of my belt. I aimed it at his chest, and charged it up.

“Clear!”

I was lucky, Amery shook slightly, and let out a deep breath. I pulled a medic box out of my pack, and threw it to the ground. Then I surveyed the rest of the scene. Ten feet away lay the body of the PAC soldier that had shot Amery. He looked dead. Further along the building lay the body of another of our squad members. It was Wheeler. I looked at another of the medics in our squad.

“He’s dead.” Said the medic. My feeling went from great to terrible. I had been thrilled that I had saved Amery’s life, but it had been to no avail, Wheeler had died anyway. Everything seemed so futile. Suddenly another explosion sounded, not too far away. Squad leader gestured for us to follow, and we ran away, Amery supported on my shoulder. Wheeler’s body lay in the shadow of the building. It would have been too risky to try and bring it back.

We reached the train tracks once more, and laid Amery down to rest. As I stared back at the place where Wheeler and the PAC soldier’s bodies lay, I felt intensely angry. Damn the PAC for killing my friend. At that moment I vowed that I would avenge his death, and try to repel the PAC army from Camp Gibraltar. After all, it was my duty.

I might continue it if people like it.

Thanks,
joller

Re: Duty: A 2142 Story

Yh man, it's good, you're almost as good as me .

The great thing is that you don't have to give expansive description of the area, we all now the "expanse of sand to our right" when running down there, which is great, you can really picture it, which lets you focus more on character and setting the atmosphere.

Clever source material and good writing.

Re: Duty: A 2142 Story

Here's part two. Sir-Nerd and Jonathanshifty, I hope you like how I wrote you in. Oh, and Sir-Nerd, there'll be some walker action with your character, I promise. If anyone else would like to be included in the story just tell me. I like having real people in it.

We were given half an hour of rest, and then were instructed to return to combat. Squad leader has us split up. I would go with Jonathan, of course carrying his trusty Bianchi, and the replacement for Wheeler. I can’t remember his name, but we started calling him “Sir Nerd” on account of his thick glasses. I know it’s cruel, it’s not his fault he’s a replacement for our buddy, but I couldn’t help but feeling resentful towards him.

The three of us were told that we were to patrol the west side of the harbor. Squad leader and Finn were going to bring Amery back to the infirmary. Quickly we moved off. Jonathan went first, scanning the area, his Bianchi ready at a moments notice. I was next, my Voss cradled in my arms. I had switched it to rocket mode, in case I needed to take out any rooftop PAC soldiers. Sir Nerd brought up the rear. He was also carrying an assault kit, but had no equipment aside from his gun, an old _____.

We reached the first of the buildings on the left side of the road. To our right was the road itself, and beyond the other row of buildings, where we had fought just an hour previously. Time worked strangely in war. The few seconds of combat had gone by at the speed of light, but everything else went excruciatingly slow. It seemed hours and hours ago that I had been doing target practice.

We made our way to the corner of the building. Jonathan gestured for us to stop. He peered around the corner. At first I thought something was awry, but then he started to move forward once more. Sir Nerd and I followed him along the length of the wall. Finally we reached a doorway that opened into a bunker. Cautiously, we made our way into the bunker. Everything inside was dark. I could hear the drip of a leaking pipe. Boxes of supplies were everywhere. A ladder against the wall led up to the roof. Everything was curiously silent.

I whispered, “Isn’t this around where squad leader said those PAC men would be?”

Jonathan replied quietly, “Yeah, I dunno. Maybe they left. Let’s check the roof.”

I went first. I climbed up the ladder, towards the square patch of sunlight above. I could hear Jonathan climbing up after me, the twenty food ladder creaking ominously. I reached the top, and peered out of the opening. Around me was nothing but white. I was momentarily blinded by the bright sunlight. As my eyes adjusted, I noticed a flat concrete roof, a couple brown boxes, and a lot of blue sky. No PAC soldiers. Breathing with relief, I climbed the rest of the way out, lugging my body onto the roof. I stood, checking behind the boxes for anything suspicious, such as an RDX DemoPak, after all, the whole thing could be a trap. A bare, dirty corner stared back at me.

Behind me, Jonathan was climbing onto the roof. I turned around, and opened my mouth to speak. Suddenly, there was a loud bang. I turned around, noticed a small black figure crouching on a crane opposide the bunker, turned back to Jonathan, and collapsed to the ground. I had just enough time to notice a lot of blood coming out of my right thigh, and then I blacked out.

Thanks for reading!
