I haven't seen comparable scripting flexibility until WoW with its Lua-based system and its XML-based UI. But I was quite impressed with UT2004's event-driven UnrealScript that could do some quite interesting things, like serving an object-oriented web interface for server management.
Oy, don't need to tell me anything about Tribes 2. Best MPFPS game ever made. Period.

The UI customization was, well, brilliant. World of Warcraft my ass.

Is that an informed opinion of WoW's customization? I've been pretty happy with it. The biggest problem is that Blizzard keeps tweaking the API (mostly to deal with exploits, but sometimes to add features) and that tends to break 3rd party extensions a lot. But the API is very rich.

Of course, WoW uses vendor-operated servers, so the API is only useful for UI extensions on the client. With a game using community-operated servers (eg. BF) such an API becomes very useful to server admins, and that's where Tribes really shined. You could easily create a headless extension on the server and a matching admin GUI for the client.

Tribes 2's was easier, better, but it was mainly aimed at people who claim WoW's interface customization was a 'first' or something.

Battlefield 2 and Project Reality are the best combination of game and game mod I have ever played.
