Thumbs down Team work? Don't think so...

Just wanted to share my feelings with ya guys .

Why, oh WHY do people sometimes act so immature and plain STUPID.
Camp Gibraltar... Me and 3 squadies running to get the flag (Central Camp), we climb up the stairs, and start capping it. I say (with a calm voice) over the voip : " Guys, please move a bit from each other, so as not to be killed by one grenade " , but of course nobody listens, I repeat my command, again to no avail, 3 assault rockets come in and kill all of us.

I gather my mind, keep it cool, and try something different : " Guys DO NOT spawn in on me, I'm gonna sneak through with ghost and camo and start capping their flag THEN spawn in on me " I hear 3 "roger that"s and I start sprinting. Somewhere half way, I see an enemy assault, behind the support shield defending the flag. He doesn't see me, and I will have JUST enough time to get behind him before IT deactivates. *Zoom* SM spawn ... *brakka-brakka "Noob [Voss L-AR] Sights92 ; Noob [Voss L-AR] arrogant squadie "

Again, I say : " Okay, let's stick together, _x_ can you spawn in as a support with IDS, Clark, and shield ? - i get an "okay" . We start passing through Camp's hallways, when we get a UAV , spotting about 10 enemies, in front of us.. I say : " _x_ deploy the shield and scanner, that UAV ain't gonna last forever " ... only to see him running into those 10 enemies, alerting them and getting the squad killed.

So my question to you guys (since you have A LOT more experience with this than me) what would YOU do (serious answers please, not the "turn off my PC" kinda ones ) ?

    Thanks ahead,
    David

its unfortunate but you can only expect so much from pubs, even when they agree and say ok to stuff.

try to reward them when they do something right and correct them when they do something wrong. mistakes are great for learning.

Sights, you have experienced a mix of pub thought and battle ADD (attention deficit disorder). The first is something we're working on eliminating here at TG, and the second is something that even long time members of competitive in house squads still fall prey to.

There are a number of things you can do to try and compensate:

Invite people with |TG| tags to your squad. If you meet any |TG| who don't listen and don't follow orders, please pass their names to me. We'll chat.

I am working on keeping track of who's listening to my orders and who isn't. At the beginning of my rounds I like to inform everyone that this is a teamwork squad, and people who can't follow orders can find a new squad. I then actively warn and kick people from the squad as they show signs of ignoring orders.

As I play through maps, and people have a good experience with my squad leading (I talk, and explain what I want from people two or three times), and I eliminate muppets from the squad, I start to develop a good squad of pubbies, who listen to me and are capable of following more complex orders.

I think the best advice is not to keep pushing if you get fed up. Stop when your irritation level is still mild, and do something else for a little while. (Maybe follow another SL, or command or something). Then come back to it.

If you want to develop a reputation as a SL, think up a custom name for your squads and stick with it. You'll develop a name for yourself, like Zoraster has with his Pecan Pie squads.

Yeah. Was that intentional, Freudian, or early onset?

Diffusion of responsibility. Each squad member assumes the other will move. We see it even among experienced players. It is not necessarily stupidity. It is sub par play and we expect more from veteran players.

To better control that over voip as a squad leader you should pick a specific person from your squad then set a waypoint for them to move to. If you are a squad member you have to just be on your toes and keep your situational awareness up.

In general, you need to be really specific and make sure each squad member knows exactly what is expected of them. Even then, some people are simply not skilled at this game and you can not depend on them for much.

On a side note voice programs such as ventrillo can be up to 3 second delay. In game voip seams to be instant though. I hear don't run into that mine alot before I run into a mine, but I do anyways but thats not the point.

When you want an SM to do something right, call them by their name. As sc1ence said, everyone will think that you are talking to someone else. Call people out by their name.

If they don't comply, see if they can hear your voice at all. I use a standard "PlayerX, if you can hear my voice and you understand what I'm saying, press Page Up three times."
If I don't hear "Roger" 3 times in a row, the person probably can't hear my VOIP, doesn't understand English, or isn't willing to work with the squad -- any of those are enough to kick an SM from the squad. I'll usually repeat myself twice while asking for the 3 Rogers, in case they misheard me or I was speaking too quickly, but I do use it as a rule of thumb to weed out completely unresponsive SMs. A significant lot of people on the server just can't hear VOIP, or they don't speak English, or they are just not interested in working as a team. You shouldn't take offense to that -- just remove them from the squad and give someone else a chance.

Throughout that, I think, the most important quality is to be impassioned (without emotions) and patient. Don't get angry, sad, or start blaming the SMs for things -- blame and negativity solve nothing. Teach people how to do things, and address them by their name.

Have your squad mates confirm your orders. Something to the effect of, "We are going to do X, can I get a quick confirm from everyone, please?" Anyone who doesn't confirm, you can probably assume is just about worthless in terms of teamwork. Try to educate them, try again, TRY AGAIN, and then boot em.

I know exactly what you are saying, sights

I'll say that I'm pretty much considered a "pubby" because I don't specifically wear the |TG| tags and only recently joined the forums, but when i start a squad I do pretty much what Augustus Gloop posted. Start identifying the valuable SMs in the first couple of rounds. You might have to play 2 or 3 "throw-away" rounds where you only have 2 or 3 SMs following orders, but by the time you get to the 4th or 5th map, you should have a good idea of who you want in your squad and you should start by locking the squad and inviting those players.

When you're playing as a "pubby" and not SL, remember to follow order and get your name out so the other SLs know you want to play Teamwork. I usually make sure the SL knows I have VOIP, ask what specific kits he wants if none are designated, and stick with the SL as much as possible. If you see a situation where it would benefit the squad to stray a bit from the SL, make sure you ask him for permission.

That's just my 2-cents on this whole deal.

Well adding on to this, i think one of Silvers videos on utube said to do things like tell them WHAT KIT TO BE and to tell them TO HOLD SPAWN. That way it makes them fall in. Also, he said that the HOLD SPAWN was good because it made them refocus. Also, telling them to fall in or regroup gets there focus. I played on a few pubbie servers in my life and i used the term "fall in" or "fall back" to keep them focused and get them to maintain and hold up. All you need to do is make sure they can hear u, and make sure they arn't no rambo jr. wanna bes. Just keep them focused and its all good.

Good point. I think most everyone wants the tight-knit squad and they will eventually find the value of the teamwork. It's those Catwalk Snipers you need to watch as they only join a squad to not get kicked.

another approach is that if they continuousely dont listen then kick them from the squad. Now its not ur problem. I have even seen sc1ence do this one when its just simply annoying.
"MESS WITH THE BEST, DIE LIKE THE REST!"
    |TG-Irr|TOWUAWAY2

    Reaperassult- "Ponys are awesome!"
    DocGuo- "Stop dyeing Tow!"
O'neil- "Put that shotgun away tow!"

If someone doesn't obey me, I promptly kick him out of the squad. I have no use for an idiot whose only skill is giving my position away and getting me and my men killed. If it's clear the guy's simply not listening to me even though I'm actually saying his name, he's getting the boot without warning.

When in doubt, I ask the person to press Page Up if he hears me. If he does press, that gives him a second chance and me the opportunity to tell him exactly what I want him to do.

Re: Team work? Don't think so...

I think it was in a squad led by daith: sorry if not mate and I very much enjoyed being in your well organised squad last week... you'll remember if it was you

We're rushing to cap a point and SL says "Cease fire cease fire!" (on VOIP)

I'm already taking fire but I hold fire and die

I respawn on SL and we're running again, nearly at a flag, couple of enemies nearby, locked and loaded "Cease fire cease fire" so I take cover again. We must be on a low-profile ingress

Then I see a squadmate's tags in the distance and hear SL say "ceasefire I am booting you from the squad now, you're not following orders"

Why does a squadmate choose a callsign that draws a wry smile when you twig that SL is totally unaware of the effect of his calls on the rest of us "Why isn't the squad opening fire?"

Small prize for even more fatal callsign calls. OpenFire

On fatal bloopers I'll own up to being an idiot in one of my first games in 2142 a couple of weeks ago. On a Titan (last time I played I was in armour in Desert Combat) in a corridor with SL, he's asking me on VOIP in my Assault role "Medic medic drop a pack" - I'm standing there looking around for the medic lol - very embarrassing not realising the combined role. SL was a good bloke too, sorry for not reading the manual my friend and quite right you were to boot me off your team. I will improve. Vista no-mike so couldn't reply on VOIP, where's the chat key, mass panic, usual cannon-fodder story
