    FirstStrike mod 1.2 released

    We can look into hosting it again if there is interest. Even on a limited basis.

    I might consider is only if they fixed it from the first release, which was buggy and unoptimized in any way

    Yeah, that's for sure.

    I just got back from playing FS1.2, and I must say it is an immense improvement over 1.0. Something about it just feels better, I don't know what it is but the game just runs much better. You guys who were disappointed by the earlier release may need to try 1.2 out. I'll be on FS much more now that this release is out, so lets get some games going soon if you guys feel up to it.

    Aside from the improvement in feel, the added content in terms of maps and vehicles is awesome. Both rebel and imp tanks are sweet, and Ryloth in particular combines air and ground combat.

    great write-up Tim on the added content and "feel" of FS 1.2. I was one of those who gave it a try and felt that it wasn't quite there. I'll be sure to download and check out this updated version.

    I can give you a bit more detailed overview if you want, I was just on-the-run a few minutes ago and wanted to post right after I had played.

    Gameplay - well, the gameplay of FS 1.2 is much like the previous releases. Each of the four classes has a variety of weapons to choose from, not much has changed there, but the guns seemed to be more balanced to me. They seemed to be different. Also the clip sizes of the guns has been changed: instead of being 1 x 100 round clip, the players get 2 x 60 round clips for regular assault rifles.

    Class specific equipment seems to also work much better. In the earlier release I was having trouble with deploying medical/ammo/recon droids, but in 1.2 everything from scripting to animations seems to have improved.

    Ammo and health Droids have been liberally placed around the map much like Star Wars Battlefront II. To add to the health/supply distribution, the classes have been separated so that the assault/support kits still retain their health/ammo perks, but the SL-specific class, or officer class, has a Bacta tank and ammo hub to help out the squad. (I couldn't remember if this was in 1.0 so I just wrote it up).

    Maps - Maps, maps, maps, we all know that maps can make or break a game. FS 1.2 has added an additional 4+ maps to your arsenal. Among the notable maps are Ryloth (combines ground/air combat), Tatooine Bestine (awesomeness), and the famous Battle Of Yavin (totally amazing).

    - Ryloth is located on the planet Ryloth (no kidding?) and is a very big, open map much like Tampa in a way. Vehicles abound in this map including the new tanks. Starfighters are also present in this map so I expect some TGers would be very pleased (I haven't played much of this map except on LAN to see the layout)

    - Tatooine Bestine takes place on the Planet Tatooine and is a follow-up of the previous Tatooine Mos Espa map released in 1.0. Bestine features a huge city (and I mean breath-takingly huge) that has about 8 CPs spread throughout the map. The gameplay is designed to cover two degrees of combat. The first part of the battle focuses on the Rebel's plight to capture the valley CPs on relatively flat ground. After all the Valley CPs are taken, the focus shifts to the Rebel's attack on the Imperial CPs located on TOP of a cliff. This part is amazing, as the Rebels have only 4-5 ways up the cliff. That may seem like much, but a well organized Imp team has been given awesome fortifications to fend off the rebel scum. This map is a must try... it is just amazing.

    - Battle Of Yavin! What can I say? I haven't played this map on a populated server yet, but it's got turbolasers, tie hangers, a long trench that takes almost a full 45 sec-1 minute to fly down, and the exhaust port.

    *Note, CP capture has been changed yet again to create more focused gameplay IMO. The maps are now push maps, and on Bestine for example, Rebels can take Imp flags but the Imp can't retake lost flags. Also, certain flags are un-cappable until requirements are met. At Bestine again, the valley CPs must be taken before the Cliff CPs can be capped. This creates a more desperate defense for the one team IMO, and causes the battles to be more focused so you have no more FAV rushes to the very back of the map.


    New Content - again, new content is new content. For a list of all the new content see this link. I can tell you that the new vehicles are awesome and I can't wait to use them on populated servers. The rebel tank is amazing and reminds me of the tank from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with guns bristling from the top and sides. The Imp tank also has its own set of awesomeness.


    As for the rest, you will have to see it for yourselves! I know I have touched a lot on the concrete aspects of 1.2 and not much on the "feel", but other than saying it has improved I can't do much more because it's something you just have to... "feel".

    This is all I have for now, but if any of you guys have any specific questions you want cleared up before you download 1.2 let me know and I'll investigate your inquiry.

    Battle of yavin isn't that great, but I never really liked the space battles to begin with.

    I just played 10 mins total and played 2 maps, it all feels better put together than their first release. One map was flying combat over desert gullies, it was fun in an arcade way. The other map was in a forest and was more infantry and was good. About 70 people played the mod at the same time as me.

    If we're interested in this, why don't we organize a day and time for us all to visit a populated server already setup and running the mod? That would allow us to get a feel for it as well as learn from people already familiar with the everything.

    Did you ever play Rebel Assault II? That game had a level where you flew through canyons that were similar to Ryloth (I think that is the map you were referring to).
