    Server Issues

I'm going to try to stay positive on this subject as best I can. It seems that lately and I mean in the last month or so the server has gotten...not as fun.

There are several reasons that come to mind and I'll try to list them all then offer some suggestions that maybe some of the admins might be able to do something with.

Overall skill level on the server. It's terrible, I'm getting TK'd more-so than usual. I continually have games that are pretty lopsided and I look at the team rosters and it's full of names I don't recognize. When it's lopsided I'll look at the other team and recognize six or so names and then I realize why it's so lopsided. I'm not just talking about lack of veteran TG players either because we do get plenty of skilled non-TG'ers on the server but even they aren't playing as often. I wish there was an easy fix for this.

I'm working a really crappy schedule right now so my play time is limited. It seems of late there's hardly ever an admin on when I play. I work nights a lot of the time so I'm playing earlier in the day and am forced to endure spawn campers and bunny hoppers on a continuous basis. Can we see about getting more admins? Some of these folks I see bunny hopping day in and day out. I try to do something about it, usually I'll switch sides and join them in a squad when I can then explain the rules. Most times they don't respond, and the remainder of the time I'll have to spend several minutes explaining why one hop is just as bad and that just because it's one doesn't mean it's not bunny hopping etc etc.

I've even noticed that there seem to be a lot of new TG'ers that need some coaching. I've been shot in the UCB by new TG'ers and seen them bunny hopping. I'm not going to mention any names. Can we try to get more veteran players on coaching these guys up, they need it. The way I learned to play this game had a lot to do with Zhohar and Lorax. Many of the 3rd folks aren't around....playing Conan I suppose.

Maybe we need to jot down all the names of the new TG'ers and get them in groups so we can train them up. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to get these new folks more familiar with how we play.

Give their names to the admins, so the admins can give a lesson in the TG way.

And yeah, it sucks that there's really no admin on at night...(PST)

    Re: Server Issues

Heh, I'm not particularly skilled (translation: I suck) since I've only had the game a very short while. However, I'd love for someone more experienced to give me some coaching (it's not fun to keep dying all the time and letting my squad down) and given that I work a full time job with quite long hours, I don't have time to spend hours and hours all day trying to get good at the game.

I'm pleased to say that I don't bunny-hop, base-camp or do any of those naughty things that break TG rules but I have (accidentally) TK'd a few times. Primarily because I don't always see a label when I put my cross-hairs over a friendly and haven't yet gotten the hang of identifying which side wears which colours. Conversely, I've been killed several times because I've cross-haired over an enemy and seen a friendly label on them, except that the label belonged to an individual who was some distance behind them. Oh boy, how embarrassing is it to admit that?! I'm sure I wouldn't be the only person to have done this though.

But back to the point. If anybody is interested in coaching a total newbie, I'd be more than happy to learn some of the tricks of the trade. I'm also pretty sure that I can't be the only newbie here (judging by Modkaman's post). Is anybody else interested in getting some coaching?

    Thanks in advance.

    I acutally have two ideas:
One: Introduce a new TGU-class. Something like "Welcome-TGU-Course". I know that this is time consuming and a lot of work. So that leads me to my second idea:
Two: Run a "Learn TG" squad on the server. I've done that too. As soon as I realised that there are very few TG-players online and my regular "AWESOME-squad" become more an explaining squad. I started a "Learn TG" squad next round. And that can be much fun too

Hey, you are on the first step to greatness, you can at least aim at a target and hit it.

    Re: Server Issues

Proctor, recognizing the uniforms will surely become second nature. But even after playing the game since last September, I STILL forget which team I'm on. Once on Fall of Berlin, I was ordering my squad to hold spawn as I tried to sneak up to crossroads and cap it. I had all my kits set up. Recon with cloaking with beacon, Support kit ready to be switched to after crossroads was capped. Everything.... Not one person in my squad told me that we were EU, and I didn't notice it until just before the round started...

Even people who play for a long time make those mistakes, so don't worry too much about it .

As for coaching new players, I would love to, but I can never play during the day. Due to a fallout from college, my sleep schedule has turned into sleep all day, play all night. I get on bf2142 to play at around 3am EST, at which time the TG server is starting to empty out (unfortunately). If I ever see you on, or you ever see me on, feel free to remind me of this post and I'll make sure I run more of a teaching squad, and explain things as I go.

When I first started I made sure I spawned in near frendly units so that I could see who were the frendlys and the enemys.

One side has dark uniforms and the other lighter ones. learn what your side has and then dont wait for a tag thats a way to get back to your spawn point fast.

I am in no way a highly skilled player but I found when you are customizing your soldier to look at the uniform your soldier is wearing and that will tell you which side you are on and who to target.

    Re: Server Issues

The summer months probably don't help the attendance to the server either...

As far as the uniform thing goes, I mistook a couple of enemies for friendlies myself! Partly I was behind enemy lines and they didn't expect to see an enemy and weren't responding to me, so I figured they were friendlies, then they plugged me... So don't be too embarrassed, it happens... It used to happen to me all the time. I look at the top middle of the screen to check my team, and I say to myself orange is snow camo and dark green goes with black.

    Re: Server Issues

Lightamp is right, summer has a lot to do with the server. Personally I have gone from gaming 3-4X per week to maybe 2X per month with kids in baseball, summer activities with the family etc... Also a lot of "kids" are playing on the server with no school in session which could bring a bit of a lower maturity level, more rules broken, TK's etc...

So what as a community do we do?

First, we hold any TG tagged player to a higher level than say someone who has just found our server for the first time. If you see a TG tagged player breaking TG rules REPORT THEM TO THE ADMINS, PLEASE. You can do so in the Contact an Admin Forum located HERE. When reporting please include who did the rule breaking and what rule they broke, what map was being played, the time and date of the violation. All this information helps us to go back and watch the battle recorder and determine what actions need to be taken if any. This goes for non-TG tagged player reports as well. We have many TG players that are using the Contact an Admin Forum currently and it works very well. We do all we can to educate but in order to do that we need the support from the community to point us in the right directions.

Now is a great time to run LearnTG squads as well. Instead of locking your squad and inviting all the "good" TG players to it all the "good" TG players should be running squads and inviting the pubbies to them. This will spread out the talent and create better rounds by having 3 or 4 good SL's and potentially 3-4 good squads instead of one squad doing their job with 25 lone wolves running around aimlessly and then you wonder why you lost. How many times have you said "our squad did our job but no one else helped support us"? Spread out a bit and have some fun teaching others the TG way.

Hope you all have a great summer!

Hey, why don't we keep the server "anti-idiot" programs on. We can at least have the teams even and have TK'ers booted.

    Re: Server Issues

We determined that auto balance was causing server crash problems so if everyone agrees not to complain when the server is crashing 10-20X per day, we can turn auto balance back on. We do have neg score turned on so if someone goes on an excessive TK run, they will be auto banned.

    Re: Server Issues

I think part of our squad issues are that here at |TG| I would argue that we have some of the best squad leaders available. So it is really intimidating to try to follow in their footsteps. I need SL hours to be able to advance a few different badges but it is also hard in my mind to try to live up to the greatness that some seem to have in abundance. I've played hundreds of matches and I still consider myself a rookie.
