New respect for Gunship Pilots
So I was thinking, "yeah it's ok for you, fancy flyboys just zipping around the friendly skies clocking up loads of kills"
So, I got hold of one of these flying machines of death, and guess what it was a bitch to fly.
SO, I invested in a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick, cos thats what the difference must be, mouse bad, joystick good.
And you know what, it's a doddle to fly, but its a bitch to hit anything, unless it's the ground with my nose.
So here's to you, a new found respect......but I still get a warm glow when I bring you down with my MBT main gun.....sometimes

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
:P go into a empty sever and just goof off, also in my oppinion, the higher ur flight control ratios, yaw and pitch or sensetivety the better, so crank em! and practice dont claim to be an expert but i'm gettin there
oh its still easier than bf2 flight :P

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
I bought a joystick awhile ago too, but mostly for other games. In 2142, the flight mechanics are very simple. There are only two things I can't do without the joystick, and they really aren't incredibly useful things to do.
As mclovin said, up your sensitivity, it'll help tremendously. It takes practice, but once you get a feel for it, the gunship is quite the fun murderbox.

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
Oh I respect their ability to fly. I have no talent in the gunship... so, I've devoted myself to anti-gunship practices.

Hats off to those pilots with the skill to evade my SAAW for an entire round. Job well done.

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
in my opinion
alot of people think poorly of singleplayer. and yes fighting bots is very different from fighting another person. but its a good place to practice before you jump into a server. at least get the flight mechanics down, try flying around Suez and ducking under bridges and between the towers.
then jump in multi player and try it. if there is a dedicated gunship squad as is usually the case on TG you may need to head to a pub server. i play with a xbox controller, and i dont get in the gunship unless no one on my team is using it (when i play on a pub )
just dont be one of those pilots that haphazardly flies 15 feet off the ground trying to kill infantry only to get shot down by a tank or a pilumand your very flesh shall be a great poem

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
The throttle control is what helps the most with the joystick. There's a position you can set it to to get perfect "buoyancy" in the air. With the keyboard, you'll be constantly tapping "W." There have also been a few other times where I've been able to somehow avoid a crash by pulling out a loop with the joystick, it gives you the continuous control, whereas with the mouse, you'd have to keep picking it back up and putting it back on the mouse pad.
And yes, singleplayer will actually help a great deal with learning how the gunship handles. Just don't expect any type of opposition.

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
The Keyboard owns the Joystick for tight maneuvers since you can go 100% into one direction isntantly instead of having to move your stíck.
For me I actually switch my controls:
AIR to GROUND combat: Nothing beats the mouse for smooth controls and lining up your gunner
AIR to AIR comat: Using Keyboard keys to fly the tightest loops and curves possbile

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
Hmm, I actually think I might try out the keys sometime for movement. I quickly gave up on the joystick when I got it, as Lyra said, it just doesn't cut it.

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
I know what you mean dude. Like most aspects of 2142, I just don't even have half a natural talent for it, but because you can't avoid walking and shooting in this game, I guess I've picked up my skills from poor to sub-par, which is sweet
. I've put a few minutes into it, but countless frustrations just leave me to spawn into somewhere and just start shooting with my AR. I had a decent round with Brutus a while back when I was playing around Christmas time on a low pop server, he was in the main seat and I was gunner, but after a while I just got so frustrated with not being able to shoot anything with the machine guns, even when Brutus had just hovered over a group of guys who were taking a silo I should have easily stopped, I podded out and went on a knifing and owning spree of about 4 or 5 people, ending with the a statement "now thats my specialty dude."
I've now accepted I cannot use a gunship.
Lyra owns with the gunship, just look at the hours and kills he's clocked with it on his stats.
Keyboards you say...hmmm...may just try it...put it will probably end up...

P.S. Can you change your controls between keyboard and mouse in mid-air? Or am I being a complete idiot and you're just saying that you use the arrow keys as secondary buttons and then switch.Anger is a gift - Malcolm X

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
Two things:
1) Logitech joysticks suck ass and will tend to lose their zero-point through their lives. And as far as I know, there's no way to recalibrate them. Therefore, use the logitech profiler program (you did install it, I hope) to set larger dead-zones if you need to.
2) If you use that profiler and mess around a bit in the BF2142 config files, you can have awesome joystick setups like mine:

FYI - hitting the 'spotted' or 'order' buttons brings up the comm menu, and I set it up so pulling the trigger will 'click' the mouse.

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
I went in on the morning and just picked up a jet and flew around until the server populated...
Still not comfortable in flying with people on board cause of the crash thing....Without darkness, how could we measure the light?

Re: New respect for Gunship Pilots
Yeah my joystick lost its zero so i tried to open cuz i was gonna through it out anyway but couldnt because there are springs in there that are extremely difficult to put back together.
DONT TAKE APART JOYSTICKS.
