mac with osx - new style aluminium keyboard (the one without a num pad)

Looks like you were spot on... tried a dell keyboard today -- no problems looks like I'll have to use that one

It could be that it's not really a technical issue but more like you've eaten one too many pastries...

I have the same Mac keyboard.

The problem is the following: the function keys that are tied to the function you were trying to use is hard wired on those keyboards to perform a hardware function when you hit it, such as changing contrast or w/e. The only free keys are F5, F6, and F13-15. I make do with these.

You can go into "System Preferences" --> "Keyboard & Mouse" --> "Keyboard" and tell it to "Use all F1, F2, etc keys as standard keys", then to adjust contrast, volume, etc, you'd use the fn key plus the function key, etc.

I guess that works too. I haven't worked with a mac yet, so I wouldn't know anything about them.
