Too Late To Start?
So I've been mainly a BF2 player since joining TG a few years ago. Being that both our 2142 servers are ranked is it too late for me to jump into 2142 as a new player? Is it going to be overly frustrating since others will have tons of unlocks?
I'm looking for the BF style of play, just a change of scenery. Sure, there is some good stuff out there to play besides BF stuff, but my poor machine can't handle most of them.

Re: Too Late To Start?
Not at all. Unlocks come quite rapidly in the future and most of the time, you don't need to have unlocks to be tremendously effective. At most, you'll need an assault kit with the defib and rockets, which takes all of four unlocks. Throw in the running upgrades and grenades, and you're looking at a sum total of seven for a basic soldier that is as effective as anyone else.
edit: Hell, you don't even need the rockets to be an effective medic, meaning that if you play only as a dedicated medic, you'll need only the defibrillator and the running upgrades, for a total of four. Those four unlocks come fast, especially with the massive teamwork scores good TG players tend to earn. Anything else is gravy or versatility.
edit2: As I understand it, in BF2 the unlocked weapons are much better than the defaults. This is nowhere near as true in BF2142.

Re: Too Late To Start?
Starting off really sucks to be honest. You'll get ranks fast, but it's not until you get about 5-6 ranks that you stand a chance. Having no grenades or anything to do except shoot guys makes it hard to make progress, but you can compensate by simply stealing kit.

Re: Too Late To Start?
not too late at all
BF2142 is faster pace than BF2 and more intel orientated to establish killing zones, its a scientific frag fest
It would be a good change of scenery for you
It does require more hardware than BF2, so check your older machine can run it ok
Gets the 2 running unlocks and defibs as first unlocks, then work your way to the rifle rockets
dirtboy is playing 2142 now from PR, which is further afield than POE2, so he will have something to say

Its not too late!
there is allways a lot of action going on on the server! And ranking up is fun
One badge here one rank there!
Its really much much faster than in BF2! So youll have the most important unlocks (mentioned before) very quickly.

Re: Too Late To Start?
Are there still demo servers available that I could test my hardware with? I've running P4 2.66Ghz, 2GB RAM, 256MB 7800GS AGP.

You should do fine with that rig. That's basically what I run at work, and it's all-good. You'll need to tweak out your video settings a bit, but no biggie there.

Re: Too Late To Start?
Never too late to start. The community is still going pretty strong, and of course it can be a little intimidating at first with new weapons and stuff, but the great thing about starting here is you have advice on which unlocks to get. Most had to figure it out on their own (As I did) and have left things I shouldn't have to the last few unlocks. First 10 or so unlocks come easily. After that it gets a little harder, but by then you're experienced to have a decent hold on game mechanics and general play. Sticking with your squad is probably the best way to stay alive (more time alive is more time learning) when new, and again , if you hadn't started out here, going out into he big 2142 servers with no unlocks would be a pretty daunting prospect. I'd say go for it, it's a faster than the PR and POE2 mods, and about the same as BF2, but I some times prefer this, as it's more challenging, and more rewarding, to combine the skills of twitch and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.

Don't know about demo servers, but it defiantly isn't too late! BF2142 is a great game and the ranks fly out! As for checking if your system, go to this site. It's called Can You Run It?, and it analyzes your system to tell if you can play the game or not. Select Battlefield 2142 and go! I use it before I buy any game.

Graphics:
From experience, I can tell you that your hardware will most certainly run BF2142 just fine. Perhaps not on maximum settings but you'll get near flawless framerates during Artillery Strikes at medium settings. (We call them Orbital Strikes in the future.)
If you'd still like to test it out, the demo (if I recall correctly) will run single player games as well.
Unlocks:
1. Playing 3 rounds with a TG squad will earn you about 6-10 "field" unlocks and at least 3 or 4 permanant unlocks. Field unlocks will only last while you stay connected to the server. I know of no faster way to rank up than to work with a TG squad.
2. The difference between unlocked and stock weapons is minor and some of the stock weapons are actually better. Case in point: the PAC assault rifle, and the EU sniper rifle.
Too late?
The TG server crashes at least 2-3 times a night. Within 10 seconds of the server crash, the server is seeded and there are between 15 and 20 people loading the map.
That should tell you enough.
Teamwork:
As for as the teamwork that you're probably familiar with in TG-ran PR/PoE/Vanilla -- look for TG squads. Post your ingame name here and I'll look for you on the server and throw you an invite. Join TS and don't be a stranger -- ask for squad invites.
Hope to see you on the battlefield mate. I'd prefer to see you beside me, but if I must welcome your behind to the future, I guess I shall

Re: Too Late To Start?
Run before they get you!
Welcome to the 2142 community. We have new players at all times. While the learning curve of TG is higher, you already have experience of TG and know how to play the teamwork game.
Might I suggest light armor all the time until you get your drug unlocks. You'll never be able to stay up with most players that way.The soldier formerly known as, Eroak.

Re: Too Late To Start?
You could also buy the Northern Strike booster pack for about some really easy unlocks.
All of the NS Badges and Ribons give unlocks rather than points and about half of those are really easy to get.

Re: Too Late To Start?
dont forget picking up kits! When i had to make a new soldier i used this strategy and it works well (at least long enough to get some unlocks going).
Hope to stick a knife in your back soon =]

Re: Too Late To Start?
As others have said it's not too late! I've come over from POE, and have been playing for about 2 1/2 weeks. The unlocks come pretty fast. Your system is similar to mine and I have no problems. Just turn down the graphics setting and you should be fine. I'm Shikaze4 in-game and wear the TG tag. Squad up with me anytime!
