A good MIC...
While I know using a headset would be superior on the microphone front, I do prefer to use my enormous surround-sound speakers. The problem is that I'm thereby forced to use an extremely lousy, annoying, ugly stick-mic. More specifically, this one:

This lovely piece of hardware cost an incredible $6 at our very own Walmart in Mountain Home. While the on/off switch, pitch setting, and microphone actually work, therein lies one subtle flaw with it:
The microphone WORKS, but only if I do this.

So- any suggestions?

Boost mic gain?

Re: A good MIC...
I have everything boosted and I still have to engulf the thing with my mouth to be heard.
I also didn't mention that unless I speak directly 'down' it, it doesn't pick up anything. It really is an extremely specific way I have to talk to it to get it to work. However many times you guys have been unable to understand me usually is because I wasn't giving it a hummer.

Personally I hate it when a CO/SL/SM uses those types, only because I hate hearing the feedback/game in the background when they're talking. I use a headset/mic combo.
I do miss hearing the bullets wiz by me and grenades shaking the house, but it's a compromise.

Re: A good MIC...
why not get a headset that uses a separate jack for the headset and mic. And then just plug the mic in and where it.

Re: A good MIC...
Mostly for comfort and audio quality reasons. Plus my headset is a big sound-muffling thing.
That's the thing - it doesn't pick up any sound that isn't focused like a laser right down its throat... which works great because nobody can hear my game no matter how loud it is, but nobody can hear ME.

Re: A good MIC...
I've got this one:
http://www.svc.com/zm-mic1-75.html
Use it with my headphones, but could easily just leave it on my desk and cover it with a sock, textbooks, a dog, and stuff it behind my PC and people could still hear me. It picks up your voice very well, so should suffice for your purposes I hope, just could also pick up your speakers and whatnot a lot too. The price tag is cheap though, so couldn't hurt to give it a shot.

Longitech makes a good headset. I use a Marshall Electronics MXL2003 Studio Condenser with Bose headphones, but for gaming it can be a bit over the top.

I used to have a headset that looked like this: http://www.amazon.com/Telex-H-831-US.../dp/B00006BAP2
Headset only, no headphones, worked great.

Re: A good MIC...
A good bluetooth headset will get the job done, especially if it has good noise cancellation. I use the Jabra BT 8010, and I really like it. You'll probably need to recharge it every time you play. Otherwise, it's perfect for this use.

Re: A good MIC...
I use just a standard USB headset. I just out it around my neck and use my nice headphones to hear. Not thst best setup, but it's a good mic. I have gotten alot of comments on my audio quality. It does not give me a model number, but it's by C-Media.

Re: A good MIC...
I actually had a table-top mic like that for ages and just had speakers, and came up against the EXACT same problem, in fact my mic looked an awful lt like that, except it was in black...Tired of having to repeat everything louder and with my head pointing downwards so I couldn't see the screen, I just bought a headset. I can't really suggest any sort of table top mic that will help since they all pretty much suck. Buying a very expensive headset with good surround sound will probably be your best bet, or as someone else said, just buy a jack headset and just put the mic in.
P.S. I suggest a post in the general hardware forums, those guys are always a huge help.Anger is a gift - Malcolm X

Re: A good MIC...
I use something like this:

Basically the mic is right next to my face anyway, and pointed towards my mouth, so I still use my 5.1 surround sound system and wake the neighbours children whenever I get artis dropped on my head, but the mic itself is close enough to me that I don't think there are lots of feedback -- at least nobody's ever complained about it to me.

Re: A good MIC...
I actually have the exact same mic...and here's how to make it great:
Bust off all that extra plastic. Leaving just the wire and the tiny round mic.
Bend a paper clip to hang from your shirt collar.
Electrical tape the mic to the paper clip.
Believe it or not, it makes that mic extremely useful, and as good of quality as anything else I've tried.
Plus...it won't cost you a dime...and if you break it no loss.|TG-9th| BBgun. - I'll put your eye out, kid.
