BF2142 locked squads and TS Etiquette
BF2142 comes with a unique squad system. Until recently an etiquette was silently understood. This thread is not about the purpose of locked squads. This thread is not about the pros and cons of locking a squad. This thread is not about how locked squads effect TG. All of these topics can be found in previous and recent threads. This post is simply to state how things always have been. Once upon a time when I first came to BF2142 and TG IHS members used to hang out in IHS channels almost exclusively. After a long while with this being the norm IHS leaders (mainly of BF2142 IHS's) were asked to encourge their members to hang out in the main channel of the game they are playing to revert to the way other games handle TS. I think everyone will agree that for a while this was followed, reluctantly. I say reluctantly because most IHS members talk constantly during play on TS and now needed to remain silent in the main channel during play but we did it and still do. One obstacle that has us reverting to our old TS ways is the Topic of this Thread.
When a squad leader locks a squad it is for one reason he/she wants to invite friends. Once all the people they want are in the squad they will then unlock the squad offering up the remaining slots to the public. I remember when I first came to the community I always spammed that join button while squads were locked. I always wanted in Silver (E1st), Crux (3rd), Bommando (7th), Lorax (9th) and Chief (21st founder) squads. Some times I would get in, sometimes not. The latter is what forced me to start leading my own squads. If you got in great, if not there was always next round. The trend I and other TG members wish to stop is the verbal asking for invites over TS. Maybe once in a while is ok but lets set an example by explaining some social truths.
1. If you have already asked once, the person heard you, don't repeat yourself it borders on begging.
2. Give the Squad Leader a chance to invite the members they want to invite first, maybe your one of them and can avoid the embarsement to both you and the SL if you ask and don't recieve.
3. If your in my squad and did a good job ill invite you next time without being asked. Edit: as stated by Unload if you are not reinvited that does not mean you didn't do a good job.
4. Don't use guilt to get an invite. If you must ask for an invite your only getting invited b/c that SL doesn't want to look like a jerk.
So in conclusion Proper Locked Squad Etiquette is as follows:
SL will lock squad and invite desired squad members. SL will then unlock the squad offering up open slots to public. Spam join button, you may get in more often then you think. Let your play earn you an invite. If you do ask over TS ask once and then drop it. If a squad remains locked even with open slots the SL is probably waiting for someone who is AFK or just crashed. Be patient, ask for an invite once, await results which will be an unlocking of the squad, an invite, or an ignore. Don't press the subject as you are irrating other people in the channel.Last edited by LordMeatwad; 09-17-2008 at 03:35 PM. I'd like to emphasize this point and make sure that the newer members understand it.
I agree whole-heartedly with all the things Meatwad has said. If you are new to TG, read this and understand it. I'd like to suggest that an admin sticky this or make it a part of standard operations. This is what Zho feels like while using C4 and USAS-12: link.

Re: BF2142 locked squads and TS Etiquette
The idea of re-inviting people to squad from the previous round is shared by many SLs. However, when I am running a squad I typically don't do this, and I know other SLs do not do re-invites all the time as well. So, if you do not get an invite, don't think that you are not good or unwanted, it may simply be for the reason that the squad leader is giving others a chance to join too.
I would have to agree with Meatwad in saying that I too used to spam click the join button when a squad I wanted to be in was about to be unlocked. If you don't get in, tough luck.

Exactly. This is a point I don't think could be stressed enough--if you don't see an opening in a squad lead by someone you like to squad with, try squad leading yourself! Run a Learn TG squad, especially if the other TG-affiliated squads are full; the people left on the team will often be the newer ones to the server who will benefit from your example.

Sometimes I just sit out that round. Gives me a chance to fix a snack and flick the rope around with the cat.

Re: BF2142 locked squads and TS Etiquette
excellent post Meat, couldn't agree more...back when I was a TG tot I always spammed the join buttons of TG squads and 9/10 out of ten I'd get into one of them when they opened.
Most SL's, including myself (unless they are running a learn TG squad) generally invite fellow IHS members, next other TGrs they know, and who are good SM's (this is not skill, following directions and staying with a squad makes you a good SM).
So this truly is incentive to not only wear TG tags but to actively try to be a good SM, trust me, the SL's that you are asking for an invite now will notice it and send you one without asking.

Please do not take any posts made by Catman seriously, we have found defects in his thought processes that lead him sometimes to act as, what the internet would call a forum troll. He feels any attention is better than no attention and must have it at all costs, even his own dignity, well if he had any left.
