    Question my ribbons failed

Hi guys, do you know why the ribbons I have might have stopped working in my signature?

I know the ribbon system is being overhauled, but why do I now receive an error noting that I have too many words to allow my ribbons appear.

Should I contact Ribbons or Apophis about this?

    Sincerely and confuse,

    Besiege82

You probably have too many ribbons in your sig making the sheer number of img tags and picture links exceed the character count limit.

I believe they are missing for everyone, and that they are missing because the code used to place them onto the forum pages was dragging the backend database to a halt. (just a guess)

If you see ribbons in anyone's sig it's because they've put them in their sig code.

If you are exceeding the char limit, then just take all of the ribbons you have earned and put them together as one image. That should solve your problem.

Hmmm I don't think that is what he issue is Xrison, from my thread Ribbons: The order of importance! I was able to display 40 ribbons in the thread, so I'm pretty sure a sig can handle a few. BeSiege contact me if you want some help getting your ribbons set up in your Signature box or you can let me know which ribbons you have been awarded and I'll do up the BB-Codes for you and all you have to do is copy and paste it in your Signature box.

No, I have this problem as well. That's why part of my sig is missing.

It is exactly the problem. A thread allows way more text than a signature box. As suggested, you can either take all your ribbons and make it into a static image or you can start feeding the image urls to tinyurl to cut down on the amount of characters used.

The limitations and a greasemonkey script to help figure it out were discussed here:

What some people do, is save your entire ribbon block as a single image. So screen shot and host it. Then place that image in your sig. Repeat as necessary for new ribbons.

Make sure that the background is set to alpha channel and not white. I saw someone around here whose background was white and it's a bit of an eyesore.

A lot of editors will not support alpha unless you use a compatible file format such as PNG. Another trick that the 3rd uses in their tags is to set the background to a light gray so that way it looks transparent but is just really blending into the background. Doing this you can save things out as JPG which will give you good compression and quality to match.

Just be careful not to compress the image too much or the quality will suffer.

My ribbons are set as a single image just because it was easier (for me) then having to code out everything. It works rather well. Just be sure that you have a reliable host (image shack, photo bucket, etc).

    Re: my ribbons failed

Also a trick to reduce the text in your sig is using this:

    http://tinyurl.com/

you enter the long URL and got it converted to a small one. That is the way I use. It is really interessting when it tells you "the URL of 155 characters got converted to 24"

I advice you to make a word-file (or what so ever) and post the original URL in there + the ribbon itself and the new 'tiny' URL. That way you can also reorganise your ribbons without going throught the whole process again.
