By using French language slang here in the General forums for the soul purpose so people can not use a translator to read what you write can only lead to people to become Suspicious. If you want to say something more private so people can't use a translator, I would suggest you send a private message to those people. Remember this is a public forum for everyone to see.
Cheers,
Stark

Re: BF 2142 as french
C'étais une joke Stark !! :P
And for the galery, I was saying that, It's cool to know there's a cupple of franco, that my english is not very well, that this is a reason why I dont feel that I'm a part of TG (nothing against you guys... it's my prob.. harder to joke with you and stuff like that), that I would love to squad up with frenkies some times and hit pubbies, that I was using slang to make harder for you guys to translate (that was a joke...) and that RamboQc is a very good guy and a good player.
And finally, I said Cya soon !

Re: BF 2142 as french
As a certified francophone, I can attest that Kossst made a correct translation of his slang french. Let me add that I understand where he's coming from as I feel a bit the same. The people at TG are real gentlemen and this thread shows that people from different origins are very welcome here. But for some guys, including me, a couple problems arise when you can't use the english language in more subtle ways.
First, it's a lot harder to be clear and concise. You can already see that from the way I'm writing looooong sentences. Blaise Pascal said it right when he wrote a long letter to a friend: "I have only made this letter rather long because I have not had time to make it shorter". It's also very true in game because you don't have time to translate. I can't count the number of times I have seen an enemy squad in a place I have a hard time to describe. Often, by the time I found a way to say it they're already gone. This is even more of a problem when you're squad leading. Which is why I avoid being SL as much as possible.
Kossst brought an other problem that is so true. Humor is such a good way to connect with people. It's so hard to be funny in a language you don't master. Obviously, some guys will have a good laugh at a weird sentence you just said, but that's not the same as joking about a funny situation. I wouldn't want to speak for anyone else, but even though I feel totally welcome on TG, I know I might never be able to connect to some people here as I could if english was my first language.
There's also a problem of tone. We all use subtle cues in the way we express ourselves to help people understand our intentions. But sometimes, you say something that is meant to be nice, but one of the words you used or the way you said it might be perceived as being sarcastic or bitchy. It can happen to anyone, even in their first language, it's just worse when it's your second language.
As I said in french on my first reply to this thread, I feel it would be wrong to insist on squading with french guys as we risk isolating ourselves. Of course, no one ever wanted that in the first place, that's not the spirit of this community. But understand that it's such a relief every now and then to let go of the translation and just being able to concentrate on your game.
Let me conclude with this:
TG est véritablement une communauté exceptionnelle. Je ne connais pas, dans le monde du jeu vidéo, d'autre endroit où on peut trouver un tel esprit de camaraderie et d'ouverture d'esprit. Longue vie à Tactical Gamer!
There is no way I could have said it so clearly in english.Last edited by Gronigo; 11-08-2008 at 01:39 PM. Reason: typo

Re: BF 2142 as french
Long live TG :P

...but what does liking milk have to do with it??
Heh...Crux ran a few BANSAI!! sqauds on April Fool's that were entirely in Japanese. It was...interesting.
Anyway, I know that I, personally, wouldn't mind if those of you who speak French natively ran all-French squads every so often. You never know--it might even encourage more people to learn it.

Gronigo, t'en fait pas
[translate] don't make something of it [/translate]
I am a native anglophone and I still cant properly describe a given contact situation in English. Dang it, sometimes I don't even know what I just rambled on about
Given the situation and the heat of combat, it is not uncommon for people, who are still not experienced , to be able to properly communication their given surroundings. It takes time and practice.
Thank again, maybe tis me
PS. If I happen to be SL-ing, go ahead and say it in French. I'll translate to the rest of the SMs.Imaging a real super kewl 21st signature here

Re: BF 2142 as french
The best thing is to not be scared to use the language. Find a squad of people you feel comfortable. If you're in a squad of people who are joking around, you can feel comfortable and not be uptight and worried about the game itself.
In that kind of an atmosphere, you can just relax and the words will come to you without trying. The most important thing, though, is to find people you're comfortable conversing with, for the sake of conversation, and not simply to get the job done.
English is not my native tongue either (as evidenced by my post above) so I definitely understand where you're coming from. It's very important for you to find people with whom you can just joke around instead of focusing strongly on the game.Fight!
