Teach. It's how we grow.
They say you don't truly understand a thing until you've taught it. I believe there is much wisdom in that statement. It's very easy to make habits, create a comfort zone, and stay there. Teaching something takes us out of that bubble of the safe and known and forces us to see things from someone else's point of view so that we can help them understand what we're trying to show them.
Each time we step outside our safe zone and teach someone something, we learn something, too.
So, why am I pointing this out? Because I believe that there is more to this community than just getting out there and having fun. I believe that if we show others how to enjoy their time here as much as we do, we will increase everyone's enjoyment of our servers and our community. We will learn new things about ourselves and how we have fun. And, most importantly, we will continue to foster this community as a place where the people we enjoy playing with will always feel welcome.
How do we accomplish this? We show patience with the uninitiated, the pubbies, and the unwittingly ignorant. We take the time to welcome the new faces we see on the server and in the community and help them increase their skill and understanding of our rules and founding principles. Remember, we were all pubbies once.
In the spirit of improving our community, I challenge each and every person who reads this to take a few moments over the next few weeks and show someone the ropes. It can be a pubby in your squad; it can be someone who's new to TG; it can even be someone who's posted a thread on the forums on a topic that's already been hashed and re-hashed. And if you find yourself getting annoyed or upset, take a brief moment to remember how you found TG. Think about where you are now and where you started. Who helped you get to where you are? Who recruited you? Who explained to you why we don't let the opposing team into our uncaps? Where would you be if they hadn't taken the time to do that? I guarantee that will give you an extra measure of patience to explain to the pubby in your squad why he needs to stick with the rest of you.
In closing, I would like to thank Zoticus, MajWood, and many others for being such great teachers and influences during my early, early days at TG. Bravo zulu, guys.
See you on the field.

Great write-up Arithea and I couldn't agree with you more. Thank you as this was a pleasure to read.

Re: Teach. It's how we grow.
maybe if someone would jes let me be a tgu instructor hint hint nudge nudge kidding ;P
In all seriousness, if anyone wants to learn anything from anybody that you notice excells in an area, just shoot them a pm. It is much easier teaching someone 1 on 1 than trying to do it in the server gameplay because it will be another name in a nameless mob
I want to say thanks to ano for trying to show me how to fly a while back, thanks to zhohar for being the first SL that got a squad moving as a group, and thanks to Lyra for knowing everything about this game

Re: Teach. It's how we grow.
With the influx of new faces around here we are going to have to open up quite a bit, and show the 'pubbies' the | TG| way. I agree with Bomber that it is easier to teach skills 1 on 1, but to evangelize; to show others the way. That is a feat that can only be done in the chaos of the battle field. It was my brother who brought me to | TG| but it was people like Zho, Smachin, Stark, Reader who made me want to stay.

I see folks teaching all the time in game Of course there are a few folks whose squad I always try to join, which may be why I feel it happens a lot.

Re: Teach. It's how we grow.
We're the ones that decide the future of our community, through teaching the new players. I say we give it our all and show the new players the ropes. Teach them the TG way and get them interested in such a wonderful community. And maybe, with a bit of luck and patience, they'll go a step further, and pass on what they've learned to others.
It was the tight squad play that brought me to TG, but the people that contribute so much to the community that made me stay.

Yep--just a reminder to everyone, myself included, that it's part of what we do.

Re: Teach. It's how we grow.
However, we also are supposed to teach people in-game. We can't just tell them, "I won't show you how to lead now. I'm too busy. Go join a TGU class." NO! It is our responsibility to teach the people on our servers. Even if they don't come to the forums, even if they don't play on the server again. It's the spirit of TG to create a mature community of gamers. Not just those on the forums or in a TGU class.

TGU is a more specialized forum more for teaching specifics of the game mechanics. What I'm trying to get at with my original post is that the culture we have here is something we've created through teaching others our expectations regarding their conduct and actions on our servers. From there, we can bring them into the community and give them an understanding of our mindset, which is the basis for our courses at TGU.

I must spread the +rep around before trying to add to Arithea's, again.
