Stupid noobish question
First let me apologize for the absolutely moronic question I'm about to ask!

As a "casual" BF2142 player I never payed much attention to unlocks or their true value to the squad but now that I'm playing more I realize I've made some truly idiotic decisions. Now that I'm playing more often I'm wonder about restructuring my unlock trees. My question is this: should I keep going and just keep unlocking as I go or should I start over?
My thought was that the promotions seem to come fast and furious when you first start. Now that I'm up to a higher rank they come much slower. What's the quicker path to fix an unlock tree??

Re: Stupid noobish question
Are you asking which unlocks should you choose next, or how to unlock items faster?
Both really have the same answer. If you haven't already, Assault should be your primary unlock tree. Concentrating on revives as a result of this will greatly contribute to your points and thus unlocks. After this, depending on what secondary kit you'd like to specialise in, Support or Engineer are probably the best idea (though I say this keeping in mind that some would definitely advocate the recon kit). I myself went through assault and then through engineer for the pilum.
Generally, on a 'helping the team' basis, there are a few items which should be your targets:
1.Defib
2.IDS (Northern Strike unlock, available through field upgrades once you have its previous support weapon)
3.Motion Mine Bait (Northern Strike unlock once again)
On top of these, the Assault rocket attachment is a must, as well as EMP grenades. In Order to Dance

I know it's fun but in general, the Clark RDX is a waste of an unlock!
I unlocked it and I've had some fun, but it really isn't effective. Now instead of having the Zeller, I have stick bombs. Trust me, they are cooler in TF2.

Re: Stupid noobish question
I'm not sure I follow, ultimately I presume you would want all the unlocks, so I would just say soldier on.

Re: Stupid noobish question
well it depends on what you have so far but if you havent unlocked a good bit of the assault kit (the most used kit around) then I might start a new and get the defib and grenades and kill from there on out, making sure to get sprint unlocks. you can stay away from SL unlocks unless you plan on SLing a lot and recon is also not hugely important. after assault I would say pick support or engy and work to get the important things there (bait and mines or clark and IDS).

Re: Stupid noobish question
Get Northern Strike, if you don't have it already.
There are 2 3-lvl badges, and 4 ribbons, each one giving you a free upgrade, that's 10 easy unlocks that should quickly propel you up any unlock tree you're looking to get. Each Badge gets you 3 unlocks (1 for bronze/silver/gold) and are fairly easy to get, and each of the 4 ribbons are also easy to get and get you another free unlock. Plus with the points you get earning those ribbons you'll be getting alot of points towards your ranks also. If you want to get a NS pub run going, lemme know and I'll join up with ya to help you out, the Goliath is surprisingly easy to take out with a single 2-man long range hachimato. =)
Other than that, grinding or starting over is the only way to really fill out your unlock tree. One thing that should help your unlocking plan. Remember to incorporate Field Upgrades into your unlock tree. As I'm sure you're already aware of, on TG servers those Field Upgrades come a dime a dozen. You can use that to stay one unlock behind the highest useful upgrade on each branch so you can spread those NS unlocks out more.

Re: Stupid noobish question
Bear, the best answer to your question is "it depends".

If you do have the essential unlock (defibrillator, so you can revive silly squad leaders who get killed at most inconvenient times
) then it truly depends on how long you are willing to wait until you get the weapons/tools you want. If you feel it would take too long then by all means start a new soldier.

Re: Stupid noobish question
Heres what you need:
Get global unlocks first up to your nike shoes. Sprint in key to assaulting anything.
2nd, get your rockets and defib in teh assault tree. Dont worry about teh Voss or baur. They are better, but also over rated.
the 2nd most importent kit is engineer. Yeah some say support, but you only need 1 support per squad at any time. Sometimes you'll need 3-4 engineers in a pinch to take out a smart walker pilot. Get your motion mines first, then find the pilum.
Then work into your support tree and get EMPs and IDS.
The best kits will always have:
Assault: Rockets, Defib
Engineer: Motion Mines, Mine bait.
Support: EMPnades, IDS
Recon: APM, RDX or Ghost, Camo. The soldier formerly known as, Eroak.

mutual respect for your fellow gamers and where all members
would be working together to advance the enjoyment of their hobby.

Re: Stupid noobish question
Thanks gang. It seems the mistake I made was jumping around from tree to tree rather than max out a single tree. I did get the IDS and the Ganz from the support tree but now I'm regretting the Ganz decision. It just takes too long to get that bad boy on target and the majority of players on the TG servers aren't going to stand around for me to shoot at them.
I idiotically didn't take the Defib and that will be my next unlock. Usually I pick one up from a ground pack but I didn't realize just how valuable it can be. My thought was that I'd go purely support but it seems that the flexibility of the Assault kits are just irresistable.

Re: Stupid noobish question
Don't regret the Ganz =(, without you'd never be able to get the IDS! Look at it that way =)

Re: Stupid noobish question
Heed this warning! When NS was released I foolishly went straight up the unlock tree to get this, assuming it was going to be as effective as the DemoPak, without doing any research or even asking about it in forums. Remember, there are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

Re: Stupid noobish question
Restarting may start you out quicker but many of the quick easy unlocks are things you really need like sprint, defib, gernades. Things that you already have and would be a waste to earn again. By the time you finish up your first tree you could have probably completed another tree with your current avatar because it takes a while to get the essentials.
Your best bet is to stick with what you have and keeping going but smarter this time. And as already stated get Northern strike if you plan to really play this game. It's worth the money and NS can be a lot of fun. Not to mention the fun you'll have on the 21st

Re: Stupid noobish question
What they said.
I can commiserate on starting out the slow way--I started by unlocking the engineer kit. :P Then I hit the TG servers and went straight for the assault kit. The rest went by pretty quickly.
See you on the field!
