question: does using third person viewing whilst in armor to 'spot' potential backstabbers etc apply to this thread?

whilst it may not involve the use of 'q', using third person mode as the gunner in the gunship to let you see and relate via voip to your pilot whats behind you is technically spotting!

(of course, 3rd person viewing is pretty unrealistic and i'm not sure what TG's stance is on this!)

No, this would be something for the Basic Armor Care-taking SOP.

As for TG's stance on 3rd person view ... it's never been discussed, and it's not illegal.
To present a quick argument for its usage, though:

Some newer cars have cameras mounted on the back, with the feed going straight to the driver's dashboard. Of course, this is only used for large SUVs so that the driver wouldn't run over something while backing up, but it's not difficult to see an extension of this in the future.

Re: [SOP: Ideas] Spotting in BF2142

Final version of the draft. This is the paraphrased summary of the relevant information in this thread.
If you would like to change anything, post so in this thread. Otherwise, it'll be submitted to admins for approval.

    TG BF2142 SOP: Spotting

    1. To spot an enemy soldier or piece of armor, hold Q and left click.
    - move your mouse cursor over the enemy
    - press and hold the Q key on your keyboard
    - click the left mouse button once and let go
    - let go of the Q key on your keyboard
This will place the enemy soldier or armor as a marker in your mini-map. More importantly, everyone else on your team will also see the enemy soldier marker on their mini-maps as well.
Sometimes it takes a few tries to spot an enemy (a failed spot shows up as a small question mark on the mini-map), and the spot marker disappears after 15-20 seconds.

    2. Spot often.
Spots are useful to the whole team, from friendly infantry, to squad leaders, and even to the Commander. It only takes a brief instant to spot, and it's beneficial to the whole team. Making spotting a reflex like crouch-zoom-shoot – it is an essential part of TG BF2142.

    3. Spotting enemy armor is especially important.
On infantry-focused maps like Berlin or Tunis, armor makes a large difference in the way a round turns out – spot such armor often so that the rest of your team is aware and able to deal with it.
On armor-focused maps like Suez or Verdun, gunships can make a large difference. A quick Q-spot on the enemy gunship will do your team a large favor – gunship pilots, walker gunners, anti-air gunners, and even tank-gunners will be grateful.

    4. Do not false spot.
It’s possible to spot, via right-clicking instead of the usual left-click, enemy troops or armor that is not actually there. Do not abuse the function because it causes confusion for your teammates.

    5. Do not over-spot.
While it is a good idea to refresh a spot on the enemy every 10-15 seconds, over-doing it will cause you to be muted for 30 seconds. In terms of BF2142’s pace, 30 seconds is a very long time.
    Fight!
