O'niell will be gone for a bit...read inside
Sooo....monday my house took a power hit. The power died for about a second or two. Not a big deal as my computer is UPS protected. Or so I thought. As it turns out, I don't think my UPS is in-line. This means that there is about a milli-second of cut over from commercial power to the battery. This doesn't even cause my monitor to blink, but it was evidently enough to send my GPU fan to kingdom-come. *sigh* This causes the GPU to heat to about 130 degrees Celsius(about 266 F) under load and consequently to drop my frame-rate in any game to 1 FPS until it cools. It stays fine for a min then heats back up again. Rinse and repeat. So my 8500GT (1Gb of VRAM) is non-op.
There is a good bit of news to this. I bought the card from now one of my favorite video card makers. BFG. I have a lifetime warranty on the card. So, with any luck I should have a new card *soon* and be back up and runnin'. If you don't see me in-game for a while, you know that I'm not playing because I don't want to melt the card down.
By the way, I LOVE BFG!!!

I LOVE BFG. They helped me with a ton of problems when I installed my first card from them. Hopefully, you'll be up and running SOON

Good, I'm glad to hear it cat. I sent an e-mail last night asking for a RMA number and still haven't heard back, but I'm sure they will come. I'm just very happy there is a company giving a lifetime warranty on computer parts.

Heh. I live in the mountains. Power outages are nothing new. For instance, this sunday a good portion of my county is supposed to have no power from 7am to 4pm. I'm hoping I'm not one of those that will be seeing as how I did not get a notice in the mail, but one never knows.

Lifetime warranties are so underrated. I'd pay an extra £100 for anything I buy if I could get a lifetime warranty on it.

Actually, now I'm not sending the card in at all. After sitting disconnected from my case it has now worked for 2 days solid....and thanks to BFGs AWESOME tech support and lifetime warranty, I can get an RMA number over the phone any time it goes again! I think I've found a favorite video card maker.

Generally speaking, the 3 major graphics card companies in NA [XFX, EVGA, BFG...] All offer a lifetime warranty and excellent tech support. You're lucky you picked a good company. =P Good to hear things are coming along well. Hope the card gets to you soon.
