Re: Timezones
Too early for Americans to be on...that's obviously the reason

For anyone that's confused at the moment about the start times for the Scrim this evening here goes - I would hate for someone to arrive an hour late to find the scrim already starting and their place being taken by a reserve.
These countries are currently 5 hours ahead of EST and should be on Teamspeak by 9:00pm local time:
* Canary Islands
* Faroe Islands
* northeastern Greenland
* Iceland
* Portugal
* Ireland
* The United Kingdom (including England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales plus the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands)
These countries are currently 6 hours ahead of EST and should be on Teamspeak by 10:00pm local time:
* Albania
* Andorra
* Austria
* Belgium
* Bosnia and Herzegovina
* Croatia
* Czech Republic
* Denmark (metropolitan)
* France (metropolitan)
* Germany
* Gibraltar
* Hungary
* Italy
* Libya
* Liechtenstein
* Luxembourg
* Republic of Macedonia
* Malta
* Monaco
* Montenegro
* Netherlands
* Norway
* Poland
* San Marino
* Serbia
* Slovakia
* Slovenia
* Spain (except Canary Islands)
* Sweden
* Switzerland
* Vatican
These locations are currently 7 hours ahead of EST, and should be on Teamspeak by 11:00PM local time:
* Belarus
* Bulgaria
* Cyprus
* Egypt
* Estonia
* Finland
* Greece
* Israel
* Jordan
* Latvia
* Lebanon
* Lithuania
* Moldova
* Romania
* Russia (Kaliningrad)
* Syria
* Turkey
* Ukraine
Now I'm not sure how many guys we have from the Vatican, but I didn't want to leave anyone out.
Alright guys, I won't be on until a while after the scrim now. If you have any problems you'll need to contact the admins.
Good afternoon, good evening and good luck to you all!Anger is a gift - Malcolm X

Re: Timezones
In fact, I'd suggest the same thing if I were in Australia, the USA or the south pacific. Whenever I arrange meetups with any international groups I base it off of UTC since it strikes me as the most common sense thing to do. But I'm not all that bothered about it, it was just a suggestion.

Re: Timezones
Na EST is easier, all those fast food easting, couch dwelling Americans couldn't manage the stress of subtracting 5
.
No really though there is far more people living close to EST than UTC here.

Re: Timezones
Servers are based in EST and so are the players, so it makes sense.

Re: Timezones
Hmm, I'm from England so of course I'm about to say use UTC. My argument is that the whole idea of starting GMT, and from it, the more recent UTC, was that everyone need only remember the difference between their own time zone and that of Greenwich. Just lucky for me it's the same hehe.
The whole point of Greenwich was to decide on a single time zone to base the others off of...Britain got it because of being a powerful nation at the time. It's a lovely bragging right for the Brits if we have to use it
(one of the few things we have
) but the rest of the world did agree so it is fair, someone had to get it. Without offence, it becomes a steriotypical expectation that Americans don't like this, so I had to laugh at this topic.
Anyway, during international meetings it is by definition a big mixture of nations present, majorities could go any way or there could be none. So it's mainly about convenience but also a political thing that the company wouldn't like to make everyone unfairly follow a particular time zone, so use the world agreed UTC.
TG does not have to be utterly politcally correct and the fact is that there are more Americans on here. If this holds true just for the Eastern side compared to everyone else then EST makes sense too. It's not terribly difficult to remember EST or look it up so I don't really mind.
If we want to go by majority instead, vote?

Re: Timezones
Actually, in summer the UK is not on GMT. It's on BST, which is GMT (or UST) + 1.
That's the thing I like about this idea the best. You never have to calculate between 2 different time zones where the summer/winter time might be different.
i.e. This year DST in USA started on March 8th, DST in Europe on March 29th.
So on March 7th: EST = UTC-5, CET=UTC+1, meaning EST=CET-6
On March 8th-28th: EDT (EST time zone) = UTC-4, CET=UTC+1, meaning EDT=CET-5 (...and confusingly for Americans EDT=EST+1)
On March 29th: EDT = UTC-4, CEST=UTC, meaning EDT=CEST-6 [again] (...and still EDT=EST+1)
Then of course, the clocks go back in winter too... so for about 4 weeks a year the time difference between USA and Europe is 1 hour different than the rest of the year.
There are also time zones without DST... just to make life even easier.
At least with UTC, you only have to make one DST calculation and you do it locally.
I didn't know that the military used UTC (or Zulu time), but it makes sense. They also have to coordinate across time zones without confusion.Last edited by leet3lite; 04-05-2009 at 07:32 AM.

Re: Timezones
OK, I'm only a simple redneck here, but maybe it would be easier for the event organizer to simply put the times from a few key time zones in the event details rather than just est/edt.
(Shrugs) I've always found cutting my grass with a lawnmower far more effective than using dynamite. At least aesthetically.
Incidentally, if I recall, we do have an event calendar, and I imagine it does do timezone changes based on your user cp settings. But I'm going out on a limb here.

Re: Timezones
The best way to calculate your local time compared to the standard time used by TG (either EST or EDT) is to go right to the bottom off the page, while logged in, and see what the time is now.
Then Log Out, go to the bottom of the page and see what the time is then, since that will give you the time in EST/EDT. Then just see the difference and go from there.Anger is a gift - Malcolm X

Re: Timezones
I use this website when converting TG events to euro times for the E1st: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html
Also the xfire calendar does a nice auto convert, so i also put the events in there: http://www.xfire.com/clans/e1st/events
Xfire also reminds which is a nice feature.
