Re: Disappointed
Now, remember, this isn't apparently an actual rule, so don't go on the track of "it is against the server rules" (which I thought at the start). What this would actually be is- a rule of recruitment and sportsmanship. The main thing for me is, if someone wants a good teamplayer (like the "pubby" example on the commander thread), and even wants to in the future maybe even take University courses, then how are we going to be able to do that with many locked squads and introverted players? If you want to complain (don't take that word offensively) about not having good teamplayers, then go out and recruit! Let some "n00b pubbie" come and play in your squad, and they might just turn out like Zohar, Drbeat, Martha, or any of the awesome Tactical Gamer members (not to mention squad leaders in the future!). Do you want to know why there is always a squad that isn't "TG" squad with all "non-tg'ers" every single round? Because all of the squads made by the voice over IP using Tactical Gamer members get filled up (or locked out) with/by other TG members! Nobody improves, and nobody gets recruited.
I have never seen a game so "clicky".
This wasn't a rant, or intended to be offensive to any member or group of members, so please, don't take it that way.

Re: Disappointed
The word you are looking for is clique.

But yes, your words have truth to them and the SC makes a point to open up its non-asset squads after inviting fellow SC members.

Re: Disappointed
I would like to present another viewpoint of this issue.
What about the slackers trying to nudge their way into squads led by historically powerful squad leaders? I constantly see non-TG players fighting their way into Reaper's, Zhohar's, and Lyra's squads, to name a few.
Why? Because in the non-TG mind, they're assured victory without having to work for it. They don't want to babysit Roadblock and Square with my squad, but TG members like O'Neil, Latina, and Kelvin understand that it's a job that must be done. And so while the pubbies on my team constantly feed the opposing team more tickets, all I can do is sit back and watch the carnage unfold.
As long as points, and not teamwork or success is their goal, they will gravitate towards squads that traditionally do well. I haven't led squads nearly as often as some of our more distinguished members, but I can't tell you how many times I've said "we need to protect this area", only to receive "but our points will be so low!"
Locking squads allows me to invite people who I know won't mind having only six points at the end of the game, but darn it, the enemy never back-capped Square or Outpost.
ADDITION:
Yes, I know you all hate me now for my slightly non-pubbie friendly attitude.
The majority of pubbies are nice and do amazing work. But I've seen the polar opposite many times, too.|TG|picric_hamster

Re: Disappointed
I have mentioned this problem several times. Finally someone else seems to be noticing. Maybe people will finally change their ways, but I doubt it. If it's not in the rules (and it shouldn't be) they see nothing wrong with it and will try to rationalize it in many different ways.
1337 by any other name...is just as distasteful.

Re: Disappointed
please feel free to contact anyone of the Squad Leaders on the battlefield when you are playing, they(or I) will gladly join your squad and help you learn. You should also try to join up with these Sl's. If you are not on TS(I know some have problems with it) then type a request into chat and hope the someone sees it. There are quite a few threads on SL'ing also..just do a search in the forums.
Sorry, back on subject. Squads are locked for various reasons and there are plenty of different reasons for it. Yes, at times is does......stink, but if we communicate then we can resolve. My squads are usually unlocked and there are times when I wait to form a squad so that I can pick up the new players. Although it is nice to have a couple Tg regulars in the squad to help show them how we play.
I have had some really great rounds, #1 squads, with all non-TG'ers in my squads. Don't look at it as being elitist, look at it as people trying to enjoy their friends with limited time.
There has been a great influx of locked squads lately and it can be quite annoying to non-TG and TG players alike. I often join under a different soldier without TG tags so that I can play and see how non-TGer's are handled and what is being said. This is very helpful in watching the attitude of the server.
If you want in a squad, then most of the time the squad will need to be locked to save you a spot...is that fair when we are all discussing how much this bothers people?
This is a great thread and I like seeing the opinions here. I have to agree with Reap about the APC though. The SL knows what they need and will sometimes form a squad based on that also.
If Zhohar is on the opposite side, then I know that I will need at least one great medic!! Keep it going, but please keep it mature and on track.
Thanx

Re: Disappointed
As far as pubbies playing in squads and not following orders go I usually give a warning over VOIP to follow orders or be removed and then if they don't return to the squad to follow the objective they are kicked from the squad.

Re: Disappointed
Yes, TG has quite a reputation for squad leading. My soldier is "[SF] TheDarkPenguin", and since I don't have much of a name for myself yet
, whenever I create a squad the only person besides pubbies that joins is Torres, because nobody else (that isn't a TG member) recognizes me, and thinks that I am just like any other Pubbie that just squad leads for the points. lol!!

Re: Disappointed
And for the record, I lock my squads all the time. Sometimes I take 2-3 people, sometimes six. I take as many as I feel I need to get the job done I want to do. You can post a fricking screenshot of my locked squad if you want. No need to blank out the names. I'm not ashamed to be working hard to win with a teamwork oriented mindset and doing something that isn't against the rules.

Re: Disappointed
I've been fairly quiet through this entire thread, and I'm simply going to throw in my $0.02.
I play here at TG because of the "environment where there [is] mutual respect for your fellow gamers and where all members [work] together to advance the enjoyment of their hobby." - Tactical Gamer Primer
I squad lead, and in doing this I try to win and have fun with my squad. For those of you who see me SL, you know that I usually lock the squad, invite a few people from last round (TG and non-tagged alike) as well as an 11th member or two. I run locked squads occasionally and participate in them quite often. I don't see any reason that a TG member should hang their head in shame or feel guilty for being in a locked squad and having fun.
Squads are locked for various reasons whether it be IHS practice, asset squads, or just wanting to play with a group of people that you jive with. You can see it as elitist, you might feel band that you were excluded, and don't think I don't know how it feels. When I joined at TG I remember looking at SLs like Crux and Zhohar, wishing I could be invited to their squads.
People squad lead because they enjoy it, and everyone has their own preferences on who they want to SL based on expectations. Some squad leads are extremely good with players new to TG, while others will have higher expectations and will play with squad members that they know can hit the expected level.
This is one of those topics that comes back every couple months. Do I think that locking of squads should be outlawed for non-asset purposes? Of course not. I think that everyone just needs to be a bit more tolerant of the squads we see run. If there isn't an open squad, create your own! This is how I began squad leading.
Just my $0.02

Re: Disappointed
I find myself agreeing completely with Crux and DrBeat here.
There's plenty of opportunities to join us in our squadplay, be that by installing TS and getting in our gen channel and asking for an invite, or SLing yourself, or learning to ninja the JOIN SQUAD button or w/e. Patience and tolerance is key. We all come here for a specific experience, and for many, that happens in a locked squad. Sometimes it's unfair, but life is unfair. Sometimes we have to suck it up and deal with it. It happens to me all the time too, and I'm the leader of an IHS. Just take the initiative.
