Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
I'm actually working a bit of research (if you'd like to call it that) on what order you should choose your unlocks. I did something a while back, but totally forgot about it, and decided to start over again with my grown knowledge. Right now I've got a pretty basic idea of which unlocks should be unlocked first for playing on a TG server. This is all at a standpoint of a beginning BF2142er who wants to get in on the fun with the amazing members of TG. When I finish this it will be better explained with reasons for choosing each unlock and I'll probably change some items around depending on what others see fit.

A couple of side notes:
- This is not taking into consideration Northern Strike
- It begins at a fairly Assault Medic kind of path, since they are the number one key role on the TG server
- This is not taking into consideration any specialties that a person might have with a weapon or kit
- Recon is not considered (this is not because I feel like Recon doesn't provide any contribution to the squad [I actually love being Recon], it is because Recon seems more like a specialty kit where someone should be good at its functions before using it)
- Squad leader things are put towards the end because I feel that to be a good squad leader, one much gain experience as an infantry first|TG| HolyEnd

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
I'm sorry, but what makes battlefield the game that it is is the ability to bring the dead back to life.
First thing you should get hands down is the defib. It is a great way to help out your team and earn easy points for getting more unlocks.
After that, work your way up the universal solder tree getting the grenades, sprint and stamina. Then pick whatever kit you like the most and work on that one. Assault is generally the best way to start off, just skip the smoke grenades and the Voss for starters. Focus on getting the PK rockets (aka the second best unlock next to the defib). If you are not sure what kit you want, the extra clip and extra grenades are always good to have.
After you have a strong Assault kit, start working on the Engineer or Support for the larger vehicle based maps. EMP grenades for the Support are a must, and if you go Engy, work on getting the Motion mines.
Squad leader beacons can be saved for after you get at least one strong kit. The first drop beacon is not as useful on TG servers as you might think. Must of us know to look for them and enjoy camping them for easy kills and good laughs. The intel the Otus provides is great, but you have to be careful with it out. It is like a giant "shoot me I'm the SL" sign hovering above your head.
Just a tip, if you have Northern Strike: DO NOT UNLOCK THE NS BEACON! Most of the time it will glitch and cause your squad member to die in 10 or 12 seconds instead of the normal 15. 5 seconds makes a huge difference when going for that revive.
For the most part, I really think Specterr and Silver have it very close, I just would put the Defib first.
- Defibrillator (help the team and get easy points fast)
- Grenades (useful)
- Sprintcor 20 Enhanced Endurance (run longer and recover faster, moving fast is really important for squad play)
- Staminar 9 Recovery System (run longer and recover faster, moving fast is really important for squad play)
- Advanced Med Hub (to heal a lot faster, yourself & others)
- Herzog AR-Shotgun (a step towards rockets)
- NetBat Infantry ID (a step towards rockets)
- PK-74 AR-Rocket (by the time you get rockets you will have died a hundred times from enemy rockets and you will know how powerful they are)
- Spawn Beacon (rarely used, but you need it to get the Otus)
- Otus (#1 SL unlock IMO, the intel it gives you makes your squad much more effective)
My friends call me Y. My enemies call me... well, that's a secret.

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
The Beacon is by no means a bad tactical tool. It just gets missused all too often. It gains power on the hugh maps. Which is what Whiskey is prolly restarting 2142 again

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
yes, this is a game of intel and there are lots of toys for that
see vids
Otus drone + recon netbat unlock gives red dots on minimap (see 22 secs into vid)
IDS on Otus (I invented this!)
actualy defibs is the best first one because you can then immediatly make that contribution to your squad in game 1
@ Whiskey
have you got 2142 installed and ready to play ?

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
I am a noob so don't read this, I will just ramble to myself here.
I may be misunderstanding your playstyle when I read the OP but I thought you said you like to lead from the back and pick people off from middle distance, utilising situational awareness.
That to me (and again I'm a noob, so this may not make sense) sounds like a LMG/HMG wielding support player. The defib knocks sliced bread out of the park, and if you don't have it when everyone's called in medic then you will be crucified by your SL, even if it's your first ever game, it's just expected at TG. After getting this though I would spend some time (not necessarily on TG servers because all Supports in a squad should have an IDS - one of the high ranked Northern Strike unlocks) seeing how you like Support and the LMGs. Not saying that's definitely the role for you, but I would most certainly not overlook it from what you're saying, although assault is considered the standard because of its versatility, and because of the ability to revive and heal so I can see why most would recommend it to start with. Support, after all, has many of the intel-gathering pieces of equipment as well, with the IDS (which can be combined with the Otus) and the Pulse-Meter and the ability to see cloakers and much more with their NetBat. And you can never underestimate the value of being able to EMP Lock on an armour map (which, if I am to believe Lyra, is a type of battle you are particularly skilled at)
For precision shots the Baur is probably the better option of all the assault rifles (it really is a she-dog to handle at first, especially when you get used to the ease of use of the default rifles, but if you can get used to it then you can be deadly with it at these middle ranges)
There's been enough great advice about the player upgrades that I wouldn't really be able to add anything too, I made the mistakes of not getting them early and I most definitely paid the hefty price.
P.S. I've never carried the Otus the few times I've SLed, and I have rarely been in a squad that uses an Otus/Accipter - are you telling me that no matter what SL equipment you have, your Squad members can spawn on you? The Green Dot of the moving Sl will always be there? And the sole use of the SL beacon is to have a deployable one? If this is true then I really am the biggest noob ever, and now I realise why people would take one of the drones instead of a beacon every time. I thought only if you had the SLSB could people spawn on you...Last edited by SharinganTH1422; 05-28-2009 at 09:52 PM.

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
Yes, on all accounts j/k

If you rarely squad lead then it makes sense you wouldn't know how they work. You can indeed still spawn on a SL with an Otus or Accipter, all beacons do is let you deploy a spawn point instead of it being yourself. It can be handy in the right situations, though more often then not it either gets camped by the enemy, destroyed, or you simply move to another location on the map and it becomes useless. Thats why most TG SL's don't use it regularly.

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
Most importantly, I would suggest ignoring the weapon unlocks. The default weapons aren't to a degree of crappiness to deserve a weapon unlock.
Each time I've unlocked a weapon I've regretted not spending that unlock on another kit. Those field upgrades come quick, especially when you're in a TG server. In a matter of half a round you'll likely be able to unlock all the weapons you'll need.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blah blah blah.

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
Great see you on the server this early morning. (sometime after midnight) I was surprised to see the 12th on the server, good going.
You guys took me back, when I heard you talking about how one is to properly use a rifle rocket. It reminded me of a time the 6th Marines were playing on the server.

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
I agree. First thing always the defib. The sprint isn't going to get you those early points, so get the defib, and within 1 or 2 rounds, you can get the other stuff. This route should be a faster upgrade path.. It has been for me. Plus, you can stroll around familiarising yourself with the maps, instead of following Zhohar to the back flag in record time, which will you will get to do in time..
Because TG has a mix of infantry and armor maps though, I hold off from unlocking the support kit completely, except for EMP grenades, because I want to blow things up, as these rounds are sometimes longer, and there are so many things to do, and motion mines will be your friend! You can stick with the assault kits for infantry rounds, as you won't get bored of rockets that quickly..BF3 Soldier: DrSparky

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]
That reminds me of something... What exactly is required for an Accipiter to begin engaging targets? I used one in my squad earlier on a Cerebere round, and it wouldn't fire at guys withing 10 feet of me at Church, but instead was merrily buzzing at some guy down at Office Ruins.
Any advice/suggestions?

For the acipiter to fire on things one of your SMs or you have to STARE at an enemies body for a full 2 seconds. This will activate it.

Oh dear god, you serious? Does Q-spotting activate it too? Or just sight contact? Because in that case I will only bring the Accipiter when defending....
