If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]

... which unlocks would you get first and why?

I'm starting from scratch here and wondering which way to go. I'm wondering about two things: First is which general unlocks are best (sprint, etc). Second is for me to try guessing which primary weapon might fit my playstyle best.

In BF2/PoE2, I SL a lot, so my play style is generally to hang back a bit and leverage situational awareness to generate high-percentage shots, mostly at medium range. There, I'd typically either go special forces (for explosives and a silenced carbine) medic (to self heal).

    Thoughts? Links?

I would have gotten those sprint + grenade unlocks. I died so many times in my early BF 2142 playing days because I wasn't able to sprint fast enough or because I missed so many shots (when I could have thrown a grenade, considering I loved grenades in BF2 Vanilla).

I would suggest focusing on the assault tree as a whole if you're looking for medium range engagements. Unlock grenades, sprint etc right off the bat. Then start on the assault trees. The Baur is great for mid-range if you learn to use it right. Otherwise stick with the default assault rifles - the Voss is not your mid-range friend.

Personally, I would have done sprint and grenades first. Followed by the support tree. However, for your mid-range style, I think everyone is right. The assault tree is the way to go unless you really want to use the support HMGs for that. Just remember, as I'm sure you're aware, "mid-range" in 2142 can very quickly become a whole squad breathing down your neck. Then you flip it to full auto and unload your clip.

I would agree with Crux's analysis of your play style.

Get the grenades and both sprint unlocks right away. Then unlock the defib in the assault tree, and get the upgraded medic hub. With the upgraded medic hub you will be able to heal your teammates faster & for longer periods of time. You will also be able to heal teammates who are in and around any vehicle you are inside of. Some people might disagree with this, but I think that you'll get more points out of healing people faster to earn unlocks more quickly.

Then go for the Baur, which is the assault rifle on the other arm of the assault unlock tree (from the defib).

Once you have the Baur, I'd get the extra clip (in the general play unlocks) and the third grenade unlock.

Then, go where your heart desires.

Drop beacon, sprint and grenades first (you can field upgrade to Otis), then depending on which type of player your are, either work up the assault tree or support tree, either kit is capable of ranking up fairly quickly on on servers.

This is a method that's served me well when learning anything foreign, Whiskey: do the stupidest thing first. This has served me well because it exposes me to the limits of what I aim to grasp, the outter corners, the hard truths.
Beyond that, do what's fun. You can't excel at anything if you don't like it. Don't bother with what you will be effective ... that will come in time. Focus on what is fun.

When I played first, the very first unlock I cared about was the Ganz HMG. I loved the damn thing, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I didn't mind losing more engagements than winning -- I was having fun.
And with time, I moved on to assault rifles, then to the Clark shotgun, and recently, to armor. If there's a unifying theme to all of those: do what's fun. That's the fuel that makes you fix mistakes, and learn new things.

I would heartily recommend unlocking RDX first because there are few things funner to do than to blow a squad sky high ingame. What do you find fun?

I must disagree with Zhohar here and agree with Crux. Looks like you already played BF 2142 before and it would benefit you more to get the most important stuff first. Sprint, grenades then work your way up the assault tree (I would suggest the Voss first because its an easier gun to learn how to use, but its up to you), then go down the support tree to get the Clark shotgun and the IDS (most TG squadleaders will love you for it) and then engineer.

I would recommend getting the recon stuff last because if you go recon first, your rank progression would be slow and might discourage you.

    My additional 2 cents

    lol Zhohar....

This isn´t a noob. He knows how to play and what he wants It´s a potential killing machine with the situational awareness of an Octoput with Eyes instead of legs. I bet he could teach you alot about SLing on the big maps from his PoE experience.

So ya Wiskey - gets Grenades > Sprints, then get Medic stuff. Even if it´s only for ppl to kitswitch to you and revive. Medic also has access to the best variety of Guns and attachments.

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]

I recommend, a few global unlocks and then assault kit to the point of having the rokets
    1. Grenades (useful)
    2. Sprintcor 20 Enhanced Endurance (run longer and recover faster, moving fast is really important for squad play)
    3. Staminar 9 Recovery System (run longer and recover faster, moving fast is really important for squad play)
    4. Spawn Beacon (optinal, by this time you will have played a few games and maybe ready for squad leading, the beacon is limited use but a new toy that is not in POE2)
    5. Defibrillator (to join in the revive party)
    6. Advanced Med Hub (to heal a lot faster, yourself & others)
    7. Herzog AR-Shotgun (a step towards rockets)
    8. NetBat Infantry ID (a step towards rockets)
    9. PK-74 AR-Rocket (by the time you get rockets you will have died a hundred times from enemy rockets and you will know how powerful they are)

while you are getting all these unlocks, you can be picking up kits and trying all the unlocks of the various classes, that will give you a good taster

also, top left of the screen while playing is a green bar, squad teamwork points fill the bar up and then you can get a field unlock and try the next tier unlock out

Unlike Zhohar however, once you've done the 'stupidest thing first' technique you should probably stop

BTW I think Exploding has a good sequence there except for the spawn beacon. That can be a much, much later unlock. I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I put down a spawn beacon when squad leading. And I'm not exaggerating. It has been at least a year.

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]

Player upgrades first is a must! They stay with you no matter what kit. Even after a kitswitch. So in effect these upgrades are for 4 kits at a time! Like a cheat that gets you 4 unlocks instead of 1.

After that, go AED-6 Defibrillator, Herzog AR-Shotgun, NetBat"! Infantry ID, PK-74 AR-Rocket, V5 EMP Grenade then NetBat"! Active Camo ID. The last 2 are support unlocks the rest were for assault.

My reasoning would be that you'll play medic a lot at the begining. Lot of revives and heals for the unlock points. Getting those rocket and shotgun attachments are a must!!!!

Kit switch whenever you can to try out unlocks for yourself. Never go to the top of an unlock tree unless you have ALL other unlocks for all 4 classes. Otherwise you'll lose the field upgrade potential for that side of the tree!!

I don't know where you stand in the unlocks at this time but I'd go for those first. If you truely want to hang back and watch for runners/breakthroughs get the support shotty and on to the IDS (permanent unlock only exception).

Also never forget the usefulness of EMP nades as a support. As a failsafe guy at the back it can quickly draw attention to enemies breaking through. It will highlight cloakers with a techno show and it also messes with gunsights and ability to return fire (also causes enemies to TK each other sometimes)

Another option would be to go the recon way. Make sure you have an OTIS (SL unlock) and the NetBat"! Fade Delay helmet. Once your OTIS is up your helmet will translate all diamonds into dots on the minimap. This has a huge range so you can still stay back a bit! You'll be like a walking UAV but just for your squad. Get an IDS and PDS on that puppy for team level intel also!

Intel is key in 2142 so if you really want to stay out of the main fights and hang back, the recon tree mights be where it's at for you (not just sniping, more intel supplying)

    10. Otus (#1 SL unlock IMO, the intel it gives you makes your squad much more effective)

Re: If you could go back in time... [unlock discussion]

On my new soldier I made, I went in this order:

    Defibrillator
    Grenades
    Herzog
    Netbat Upgrade
    ROCKETS (Heck yeah!)
    Sprint Upgrade 1

I think I'm going to get the second running upgrade and adv med hub from here, and then start unlocking the engy kit.

I found that I got up to the Netbat over the course of two rounds following this order. Just run around and revive everything and anything. Then the following round grenade spam and revive. By the third round you should be able to hold your own in engagements with defib and Herzog at the ready.
