At least one thing we all can do - make a low priority to the process
BF2142.exe. It prevents of ping jumping.
Apropos: my ping on
TG server is always 160-190. Usually something like 165-170. And almost all my settings are low, mid and high. 2x antialiasing at least. I've never touched BF config files, although I've read about it in the PunkBuster's forum and other places.
I'll try to grab some info about it later, it's pretty interesting.
And about graphic settings influence. I really doubt that those settings have a decisive influence to the ping. They influence to your hardware - CP, video accelerator, memory, but not on a ping. Coz, as I think, while we connect to any server on internet we send it not our picture with shadows, antialiasings and etc, but only info where we are on a map, what we're doing, who firing at, and server send us the same info as well. Picture - it's a problem of our computers. Ping - it's a problem of ours ISPs and a width of our internet channels.
Furthermore, a high ping by itself - not a big deal. It could be 150 or 200 believe me, it's okay: you still gonna hit targets without any visual problems. What's more, the game as a programme can and does correct your hitting model and other stuff - it's programmed to do such things. Most terrible connection problem is packets losing (I'm not sure I'm right to write this in english). That's the real pain in the ass! You shooting bloody red-guy right in the head almost dozen bullets, but more than half of your signals are lost by some reasons. And this is very, verry.. bad for you. The only best way - disconnect as fast as you can, at least if you're not masochistic person

Such story I personally have when I connect to Sandviken
BF2 server for example, although my ping there is 40-60.
