You make the Rotation, take 2.

We're going to do this again. The premise is the same as the first go around: you make a rotation and submit it here for review and discussion. If it looks like a viable rotation, we'll give it a shot on the server.

    Rules:
    1. Map ratio - Our goal is to have at least one armor map for every three infantry maps.
    2. Northern Strike - Not everyone has Northern Strike, don't include it a regular rotation. You can create a rotation with Northern Strike mixed in, but it will only be considered for special nights and not as a regular nightly rotation.
    3. Titan - The last time we did this, Titan was not allowed. This time we will allow one (1) titan map in per rotation. Please note, it is believed that mixing modes may cause server instability. If we find this to be the case, we will either modify the rotation to remove the titan map or simply move on to another rotation.
    4. Rotation Length - We prefer to keep the rotations as short as possible, however you may include maps more than once if you feel it makes the rotation more diverse and enjoyable.
    5. Rotation Life Span - It is our intention to update the rotation every two weeks or so. If a rotation is not playing well, we will change it out sooner. If a rotation seems to be popular we may let it go longer.
    6. Custom Maps - We can NOT run custom maps on our ranked servers, however, we can on our unranked server. If you wish to sumbit a rotation with custom maps for the unranked server, please do so in the "Contact an Admin" forum. This will be treated as a request for the private server. Please provide a date to play the rotation and the location to download any map files as well as any special instructions.
    7. Formatting a Rotation - This will be a bit different. When submitting a rotation, include map name, mode and size, in that order, for each entry in the rotation. Maps sizes are 16 (100 tickets), 32 (200 tickets) and 64 (300 tickets). Proper map names and modes to choose from are:
      • gpm_cq - Conquest

        belgrade
        camp_gibraltar
        cerbere_landing
        fall_of_berlin
        minsk
        operation_shingle
        shuhia_taiba
        sidi_power_plant
        suez_canal
        tunis_harbor
        verdun
      • gpm_ti - Titan

        highway_tampa
        minsk
        shuhia_taiba
        sidi_power_plant
        suez_canal
        verdun
      • gpm_sl - Assault Lines

        highway_tampa
        operation_shingle
      • gpm_nv - No Vehicles (Infantry Only)

        belgrade
        camp_gibraltar
        cerbere_landing
        fall_of_berlin
        minsk
        operation_shingle
        shuhia_taiba
        sidi_power_plant
        suez_canal
        tunis_harbor
        verdun
      • gpm_ca - Conquest Assault

        wake_island

Please list the mode, this will make it easier for us to program it in should we decide to go with your rotation. If you do not list a mode, we will ignore your rotation. The format of each line should be something like this:
      belgrade gpm_cq 32
This entry would be 32 player Belgrade, conquest mode.

If you want to create a rotation that will make it easier for us to use, create it in con format, which is simply adding 'maplist.append' to each line:
      maplist.append belgrade gpm_cq 32
Please note, everything must be in lowercase, spaces in map names should be replaced by the underscore "_" character, must have mode and size, no commas or other punctuation.

Again, failure to follow these rules will result in us ignoring your rotation. We nay not comment on it, we may not clue you in, we'll may just skip it. What am I really saying here? Don't be lazy, follow the rules!

    Things to consider
    • There will be one round per map. At the end of the round, teams switch and the next map begins. If you feel a maps should swap sides, place a second map entry after the first.
    • Operation Shingle is an EU bleed map.
    • If there is a titan map in the rotation, the server will default to 48 players. That really means 46 players due to the SM kick script.
    • 16 Player maps have 100 tickets.
    • 32 Player maps have 200 tickets.
    • 64 Player maps have 300 tickets.
    • Some maps only have 16 and 32 player versions however you can still set the size to 64 players, that essentially gives you 300 tickets instead of 200 which equates to a longer time on the map. We do this on Gibraltar, Cerbere Landing, and Fall of Berlin, to name a few.
    • Putting an even amount of maps in the rotation causes both teams to play the same maps as the same faction when the rotation restarts. That's not always a problem but it can be if your rotation is too short.
    • Rotations with a token armor map at the end of the rotation instead of mixed into the rotation will probably end up getting ignored.
    • Wake Island is best played with 64 players, anything less will most likely result in a poor play experience.

If you wish to discuss a rotation, please quote the rotation or post number of the rotation in your post. This will make it easier to keep discussion on track.

    Enjoy!

Re: You make the Rotation, take 2.

    maplist.append tunis_harbor gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append belgrade gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append cerbere_landing gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append cerbere_landing gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append verdun gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append operation_shingle gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append tunis_harbor gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append camp_gibraltar gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append sidi_power_plant gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append belgrade gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append fall_of_berlin gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append tunis_harbor gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append suez_canal gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append camp_gibraltar gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append cerbere_landing gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append belgrade gpm_cq 64
    maplist.append shuhia_taiba gpm_cq 32

Explanation: The server occasionally has those days where it just restarts a lot. To counter this to some degree, and the repetitive nature of playing long maps over and over again, the first four maps are 32p. In the head to head maps (tunis and belgrade) it will shorten playing times while not affecting outcomes that much. In the case of cerbere, the fighting will be a bit different (you don't have quite as long to try and accomplish a cap-out), but I think it's a fair trade for both sides getting to play the map on offense and defense.

Also notice that Cerbere is on there twice in a row as a 32p map. This will give both sides an opportunity to attack and defend while not exceptionally affecting the playtime.* After this, it turns to verdun and a relatively standard chorus of 3 infantry maps followed by an armor map, roughly in order of the common preferences.

There are an odd number of maps, so if someone really does play through the whole rotation, they'll play on the opposite sides from what they played last time.

*Justification: This will be 840 tickets total (2x32p) rather than 630 tickets total (1x64p). However, more of these tickets will be bled at the start because there will be two starts where bleed occurs. So I'd estimate there are about 120 or so tickets more playing two rounds of cerbere at 32p rather than 1 round of cerbere at 64p. 120 tickets (or roughly 60 tickets a side) is probably only about 5-10 minutes extra play time on Cerbere... I believe this small time difference will be acceptable to most as they won't have to whine about not getting a chance to attack.

Re: You make the Rotation, take 2.

    Couple of questions:

Is there a more sophisticated method of determining "mixed map modes = instability" other than "more frequent crashing"? I'm not indignant, but I'd love to incorporate a Titan/IO map without fear that it'll be taken out because a server happens to crash more often in a particular amount of time.

To what extent (if any) can we fool around with tickets? That is, can I run 32p Tunis with 100 tickets on a ranked server?

I assume teams switch between each map, unless I explicitly say otherwise?
That is, if my maplist is:

    Cerbere
    Gibraltar

Team 1 assaults on Cerbere, and defends on Gibraltar. Can I explicitly ommit team-switching between two specific rounds in a rotation?
    ie.
    Cerbere
    Gibraltar
    <ommit team switch>
    Shingle
    <ommit team switch>
    Minsk

    Rotation forthcoming in a bit.

People only guess at what causes instability in most cases, but I'll let others talk about that. There are a few that are pretty well known (Tampa causes more crashes, Wake causes tons of lag, putting an IDS down at the start can crash the server, etc.), but most are educated guesses.

But ticket counts are set for ranked servers. 16p=100, 32p=200, 64p=300. You can't change that without it going unranked.

Teamswitching is either an off or on thing. You can't have it on between some maps and off between others.

Keep this crash discussion to another thread.

This is ranked, which means there are very few things we can alter.

I like this rotation, it's a mix of 32 and 64 player. It also somewhat rotates between more crowded maps such as belgrade and gibraltar, and more open maps like sidi and suez. Maybe throw a few titan in there?

The rotation is interesting, I worry about belgrade as a seed map, but it's not a huge concern. The only thing I see, and it's probably minor to most, is the first and second Tunis. They are fairly well separated, but they are an even number of maps apart, meaning each team plays the same faction. As I said, not a huge issue, but some people like the side swap (especially if you're a walker pilot).

If there are no concerns among the admin team with this rotation, we'll make this the next rotation.

Hey lorax, can we have a seperate "B*tch about / Discuss / tell us you like the rotation" topic and keep this purely to rotations?

It's all or nothing with the titan maps in a rotation to preserve as much stability as possible.

I like Zoraster's suggestion. And Belgrade is actually a pretty darned popular map. I've always found it really odd nobody has a 24/7 Belgrade up, because I see it voted for all the time on pubbie servers that have it in the rotation.

This map rotation goes small-medium-large-medium-small.. no shock from going from large to seeding.
Has 3 European Theatre maps, then 3 African Theatre

Does not include assault-type maps to decrease risk of rocket/nade war.
The fabled Highway Tampa, 16p Verdun returns.
    16p Sidi makes an appearance.

    Headon(Small) x2 - Headon (medium) - Assault lines (large) - headon(medium) x2

    maplist.append sidi_power_plant gpm_cq 16
    maplist.append verdun gpm_nv 16
    maplist.append belgrade gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append highway_tampa gpm_sl 64
    maplist.append operation_shingle gpm_cq 32
    maplist.append tunis_harbor gpm_cq 32

I would like to see another rotation with 16p Suez Canal.
