Well looks like I won't be back anytime soon...
I upgraded to Windows 7, I seem to be having those odd problems that don't happen to most people. 2142 would install, but I kept getting an error telling me to insert my 2142 disk. Searched for the problem, tried a myriad of solutions that had worked for other people, nothing seemed to work. I then tried to use a virtual drive and mount an image of the disk hoping to bypass any hardware issues. Ran into a lot of problems with this. Currently, neither of my drives will even recognize that I have a disk in it.
So until I can find some free time from work to go buy another copy I won't be in 2142 anytime soon, if you're dying to play with me (LOL) I'm often on gtalk playing the zombie mode of COD:WAW, or Killing Floor. As black_mirror can attest, this is an awesome game and it's even more fun with friends.
If you do decide to get Killing floor, beware, some have had issues with the game after the most recent update that the developer released (including me). I had to play the game in a window to be able to play it at all. On the other hand, my friend, who also upgraded to Win 7, had zero problems after installing KF on his new O/S.
BLACK_MIRROR!!!
On KF they've upped the levels you can reach, they now go to level 6, plus there are new weapons AND a new class, demolitions!! --they get pipebombs, M279 Grenade launcher!!, Sharpshooters get an M14, which is deadly accurate like the lever, without the cocking action required for the lever, and a 20 round magazine!!! It ROCKS!! Bad news--My level 5 sharpshooter no longer spawns with dual handcannons, only a lever action. Three new stock maps and a new infected, shoots fireballs at you, and will set you on fire!A captain of the most awesome IHS ever and remember to burn before you pillage.

This sounds dumb, considering that you have researched this and tried a multitude of fixes, BUT make sure you are not running 2142 in compatibility mode. When I tried to initialize the game in XPsp3 compat mode, it could not find my disk, but it works fine for me with simple administrative rights granted to it.
Good Luck!

Re: Well looks like I won't be back anytime soon...
Thanks Tom, yeah I've seen that some people have to run in as XPsp2, some XPsp3, and some without any compatibility mode. I've tried just about every fix I've come across, thanks for the info though.
I used to be able to install it, but now, when I put in the disk to reinstall it, my drives act as if nothing is in there.
It was a little worse for wear, but I Game Doctored it, but that didn't help either.A captain of the most awesome IHS ever and remember to burn before you pillage.

I had the same problem with Vista. There's a no CD hack out there which you can use.

Try turning auto-start on then take the disk out of the optical drive and put it back in and see if it auto-starts.

Re: Well looks like I won't be back anytime soon...
Edit: One of our computers CD drives can't see disks either, it's like it tries to read them but it can't, I'm going to replace it.
I've had pretty bad luck with CD drives the past two weeks, two have failed. One fixed by replacing a cable.
Do you have an old install of 2142? If so, you could try copying the entire folder, and all the registry keys. It's worked for me in the past when I upgraded and didn't want to reinstall all my games. If you don't... I don't know, get another disk?
Sometimes I wish I was using an xbox 360 or something - almost guaranteed, every time we get a new game it either works great for me, and doesn't work for my brother (using the same OS, etc), or the reverse... computers can be FUN : |
Hopefully you have an old install -
Cheers,
David

Re: Well looks like I won't be back anytime soon...
when you say you upgraded to win 7 - you mean you bought an *upgrade* disc, from win vista -> win 7, as opposed to a full install on a clean formatted drive?
*shudders* if this is the case, that could contribute to your problems. Have never had a good experience using microsoft upgrade OS installs. Always go with the fresh clean install on a formatted drive if at all possible.
also have you tried just using a no-cd crack to negate the need for the game to find a disc ?

Catman, either get it fixed or we'll miss you... Either way, we will see you in bad company 2, as long as it lives up to expectations.
