The make a new soldier trend
Players make new soldiers and play them for a bit, then make another and play it for a bit, and so on. While it is perfectly within their right, I feel it is detrimental to the community to roll new soldiers with any sort of regular frequency.
TG is only as strong as the personal bonds that hold our community together. Those personal bonds are created through our shared experience over time here on the forums, on TS and in game. The one thing that connects you to that experience across these virtual spaces is your name. We can't see your face or body or any other identifiable thing - your soldier in game looks the same as everyone else. The one major thing we can identify you in game by is your name.
Frequently changing your soldier name fractures the continuity of our shared experience. Whether you are in my squad, on my team or in my sights, it is difficult to remap names to players with any sort of frequency. Because I do not realize who I am sharing my experience with, it breaks down the connection that results from playing together. At that point, you are just another pubby to me, a stranger on my server.
I suspect I am not alone in feeling that frequent soldier creation is detrimental to our community. If you are planning to frequently roll new soldiers, please ask yourself if the momentary enjoyment of a new soldier or the tactical advantage of anonymity is really worth the potential divisions such actions create in our community.

Re: The make a new soldier trend
Thank you science, this is precisely why every time I made a new soldier, I ended up going to my main one

Re: The make a new soldier trend
yeah, either they add numbers to there name or something, and your like, " are you really you?" lol. I've never made a new soldier, i don't see how they find enjoyment out of it. I like my unlocks!!

Re: The make a new soldier trend
You know, some people stick with their main soldier and periodically use another for a night or two. I have another soldier that I periodically use, although it is just a short version of my normal soldier's name...

Re: The make a new soldier trend
This is exactly why I'm getting a little tired of logging on to the server lately. I freakin' don't know who anybody is anymore, and half the time it just feels like I'm pub raiding or something. I loved logging on, and recognizing 80% of the names. Now I honestly feel a little alienated our on own server, because I don't recognize a LOT of the names the server regulars are using now. Apparently I'm not 'rollin' with the right crowd.
I do have a second soldier that I've played with a little bit, just to see if my stats would be any better after playing for a few years. It's TwigMcLarge.|TG-55| Infantry Division - Captain

Re: The make a new soldier trend
People should put the names of their soldiers in their sig. Its also a good idea to name new soldiers something similar to what their normal soldier is. i.e. Deterhek=D.E.T.E.R

Playing BF2142 as:
-{SXGr}- J0KerRr
-{SXGr}- x^DeTeR
I'm always open for tips, tutorials and training in the gunship while online, just ask :)
Currently taking a break from MW2, but when I play its as:
eXileD// DeTeR
Even if you don't consider that I only have 7 days played in the gunship I'm one of the best pilots in the game
I will always accept a 1v1, friendly or not

Re: The make a new soldier trend
part of the problem is EA doesn't offer any additional promotions or medals once you've sort of gotten all the unlocks and ribbons and such.

Re: The make a new soldier trend
If you're talking about the rollins, I don't see anything horrid about it.
They're immediately recognizable as TG when they first appeared
They're immediately recognizable as TG now.
Would you rather they stopped playing altogether? Making a new soldier isn't about the 'tactical advantage of anonymity'. It's about being able to experience 2142 again - you can't rely on having every unlock anymore, and you get a present every so often. If you do it with a group of friends, it helps to have a uniform to make a visible identity, which is sometimes pretty funny.
I lolled when I saw rollin' Slayas
I rofled when rollin' Twenties first appeared.
IHS fractures the community just as much as groups of alter-egos. These groups just like to play together. There's nothing wrong with that.Without teamwork, you'll never survive.
Without betrayal you'll never win.

Re: The make a new soldier trend
Yeah it's mainly detrimental if anything to the people who don't use teamspeak / visit the forums. If you are in TS, you will hear & recognize the voices and usually make the connection.
Personally I usually can tell just by their playstyle, even before I figured out who the rollin' crew was & others. And there's nothing really wrong with this from my perspective, but I can see how for newcomers, or less frequent players that aren't "in the loop" could be confusing. (I realize that most posters in this thread are not in this category) Eventually people go back to their main soldiers, I did anyway.
This brings up another good point - join teamspeak more often people! Often there will be 15-20 TG members in server but only 5 or so on TS. I couldn't play 2142 TG without TS, its just not the same.

Re: The make a new soldier trend
Of course not. But if they only way they will keep playing is to make anonymous alts then perhaps it is best if they hang up the gun for a bit or move to a different server for a fresh experience.
Perhaps people should make a char with an identifiable variation on the same name. They get the new bling without the name confusion that hurts our community.Making a new soldier isn't about the 'tactical advantage of anonymity'. It's about being able to experience 2142 again - you can't rely on having every unlock anymore, and you get a present every so often.
I dont think IHS fracture the community at all, I think they do the opposite. However, I think rolling an anonymous group of alts does hurt the community despite the increased entertainment value it may bring for a select few.If you do it with a group of friends, it helps to have a uniform to make a visible identity, which is sometimes pretty funny.

If the only reason people are rolling alts is to get new unlocks, then I respectfully request that you roll a soldier with a name that is a clear variation on the one you typically use. I don't deny the entertainment value of rolling goofy names with a group of friends. But I do think the it hurts the community a good deal when that is done.
If you want the shared experience of a new soldier with friends make please make something that allows us to know who you are.

Re: The make a new soldier trend
I totally agree with you. In my view, it is an absolutely retarded idea. If do not care about wearing a TG tag you might as well go somewhere else. You may feel offended by my post but this is what I think.
Also, stop repeating the cliche about TS. Some people do feel comfy on TS, I personally am more of an outcast and do not feel comfy talking.
