First time on TG
Part of me is curious on how other people found TG.. part of me just wants a new happy thread :P
I think there needs to be some happy nostalgic moments that helps us remember why we're TG, and not some other clan.
Sure, we have the "Why |TG| Rocks" thread, but no one seems to know who he is :P.
I can name at least a few people who didn't think they would ever be enthusiastic enough to be part of any specific gaming community (including myself).. until TG proved them wrong! What makes TG so special to make these gamers into TG?
I'll start by saying my first experiences and how I became addicted.
==
Fruvous the Smurf
I've installed 2142 on just last year, though I had it for a much longer time. For some really odd reason, "TacticalGamer.com" was on my favorite server list - I never had any favorite servers! Perhaps it was divine intervention?
When I loaded it up, it was like playing an adventure game. I didn't remember any map at all.. so my first experience was exploring the nooks and crannies and alleys and hills etc.
Normally, that wouldn't be a bad thing, but I was squadleading.
Latina and Undead77 joined my squad during Camp Gibraltar. We already had Harbour, so I was moving along with everyone else to Toll, probably running around the same building 2-3 times. Despite my noobiness, everyone was happy - talking on voip, laughing...
First reaction: Ooo, some really really cool people joined my squad. I really like their personalities! (And noone dissing other people :P)
I don't think they noticed my noobiness though because they still had confidence in me as a SL. I remember going west on the catwalk to central, and being the smurf I was, I didn't really care if anyone was following me. I got killed when the most interesting thing happened... I got revived! And then I realized three of my SMs were following right behind me!
WOAH! Do players do that? Aren't they supposed to.. you know... wander aimlessly and get killed, or hunt alone getting 20 kills for every death? Did these bots pass the turing test? No, that's silly, they didn't pass the turing test because I know they're bots... That means they're human!
Second reaction: Wow, everyone's following me. I might be a noob, but they still value my decisions. Also, they use defibs? That's really awesome!
(I remember staying away from the medic branch because I didn't want to revive anyone. I also remember staying away from the IDS because the text shows that it helps your squadmembers - I wanted something that could kill people.
I was really awed when people were using tools that helped other people out).
So the round ends, Cerebere is next up. We're EU. "Well, I'm supposed to 'create squad', so I'll do that" (not thinking much into its significance). The same people joined again, Undead and Latina (possibly a few others... they were the ones who made an impression :P ). They apparently liked my squadleading, so I guessed I would make a better effort.
And I did! Albeit, I was still a newb, I was no longer a smurf.
Fruvous The Noob-> TG
I decided to come back because after the round they said, "Thanks for squadleading, come back
". (Well, they didn't say '
'.. I guess if
was pronunciable, they might have).
So I did. I squadmembers with other squads, and was awed by how deliberate SLs' plans were. I got an idea how a TG squad should operate, met a few really awesome people, SLed, and eventually introduced myself to |TG|, where I got the warmest welcome in the history of ever (this is clickable
)
Moral?
Well, I've played against skilled players before.. but that was only in FPS that fosters lone-wolfing (or at the very least, in the communities that do).
I was immediately turned on by TG when I clicked "Join Server" because it said "Teamwork required" - I was intrigued. What is this 'teamwork' you speak of? Can you use it in a sentence?
I stayed because TG opened me up to something where deliberation and forethought are rewarded to cooperative players. This wouldn't be possible if I was playing with 5 pubbies similar to myself.. and consequently my visit would have been short
I stay today because I enjoy the challenge of fighting squads that are deliberate, methodical, and cooperative. Also because I get to say, "Hey, let's do a tournament!"

Re: First time on TG
I'm not really the one with long stories, great story-telling, or a good memory, so although it has only been 1½ months now, I hardly remember anything of it at all, not due to the fact TG hadn't made an impression on me, but simply because I didn't feel the need to remember.
My very first time on TG was like in march, but since I didn't have voip, didn't listen to anything and just tried to go with the flow, I got kicked (might also have been for SM). Never got back. Left BF2142. Until I reinstalled it, started playing servers, going with flow, trying to be a killing machine but still having bad KDR. Then, I stumbled on TG (I had acquired a headset in the meantime), and joined a squad, and something got my attention.
A voice not pre-programmed in game! I noticed it was an SM talking, notifying SL of kit change. And the SL talked back. Shortly after I realized what had happened, I got kicked for a supporting member (didn't know it back then), so I started play in a 'pubbie' server. Still having the TG-way in mind, I was disappointed by the way such a great tactical game could be ruined. No medics with defibs, only voss+rocket, because people can't fire in bursts with baur, no ids (!), no whatsoever. Getting kicked because you killed some admin driving a buggy with an AR, with wasn't possible according to this guy/gal > no game knowledge, and so on...
And then I said to myself: Let me return to TG, and I saw it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, a new BF2142 era for me.
All these things that I've done in order to help the team were appreciated, all these things others have done to help the team, were appreciated. All the voip-use was appreciated. Everyone actually talked and followed orders, suggested things and asked for permission to do something, instead of just doing it. Squads were not a bunch of people with green names instead of blue ones anymore, squads were well-oiled, coordinated units. Squads were tied together, and would not interfere with one another.
To put it in 1 sentence:

Fruv, before I try to give a good response to your post that will undoubtedly be long winded all I can say is 'wow.'
Fruv, what got you thinking about such things?
P.S. I found TG the same day I got banned from the server for TK'ing an admin...

Re: First time on TG
He is indeed a mystery, I have often heard a whisper on the battlefield saying "behind you", and when I turn around I see an enemy and take em out, but that is all that is there, a dead enemy and no-one else, kinda freaks me out!"Why |TG| Rocks" thread, but no one seems to know who he is

Jazy2 turned me on to TG and I now only play on the TG servers, jazy showed me many moons ago him playing the game with fellow squad mates and I was more or less amazed by the chatter in the squad, I was pretty new to online gaming having played on the xbox and all, but never witnessed the teamplay and in game Voip being used so well till I saw games played on TG, it just opened up a whole new level of gameplay that had my fancy thoroughly tickled.
My first few times on TG were disasters as I was using a low spec pc and internet that ran at 512kbs down and 128kbs up and it was like sucking on a lemon while playing
, it is such great fun when you are running forward and then all of a sudden you are like a robot doing Michael Jackson impressions while shooting at innocent clouds up above, when I engaged some enemies, they would be amazed at my magic teleportation techniques due to lots of lovely lag.
But I am happy to say that now I have a super duper computer and a well behaving internet connection and can no longer use the excuse, "sorry about that, I am lagging like crazy here, gotta go"...Ahhh the memories!Last edited by MrMojay; 12-17-2009 at 06:59 PM.

Re: First time on TG
Thanks for starting this thread fruvus. It is a good excuse to take a nice walk down memory lane.
First squad I joined that had TG in it was a TG-7th squad led by Bommando. I joined the squad about 1 minute into the round and spawned on green. I was then yelled at for spawning on Bommando for the rest of the round. I toughed it out and loved the competitive spirit. It was the first time I found competition like play on a pub server. I did not join many of Bom's squads after that. I usually tried to get into Experiment's squads and love his style. I still try to emulate it. I quickly worked at trying to develop my abilities as a player. After some time it was clear that there was a shortage of squad leaders so I worked on becoming a good squad leader and helping others become better squad leaders.

Re: First time on TG
well i'll keep it short

im pretty new in everything gaming. this is the first game that i bought since my nintendo 64 lol. ive only been playing since august and i found TG just a couple of months ago after playing mostly only titan servers.
i am also now looking to be a supporting member, which will now probably happen in january. and i am also looking for an IHS so the moment i become a SM i can join
|TG| is awesome, and even with my short time playing, I can say that if it wasnt for the th server i wouldnt be playing anymore, or atleast not as often. its the teamwork and friendship that i love, the game itself comes 2nd

Re: First time on TG
Weird. I was just thinking of starting a more happy thread for the boards and you beat me to it.
TG was the first server that I played on that encouraged so much talk and team work I was instantly hooked. While its hard to remember exact and specific "omg" moments I do remember some of the people that took the time to laugh with me at many of my noob moments and still be glad I was in the their squad. So thank you Fruvous, Oldgunny, Smachin, Dementia, Latina, Cherdos, Martha, and Frozen. There are others but these ones stick out most notably for me for various reasons. TG really is a great place with so many great people. I'm glad to be here and take part of it.

Re: First time on TG
Years ago I had played what I thought was the greatest game ever - Tribes2 - which had an awesome teamplay/tactics element to it that I had never found matched in anything else. I had been searching for something similar since
.
I first bought the game on some random guy in Best Buy's reccomendation. My second night I had this guy that squad led so well, he used voip and solid tactics. It was awesome. Then, I spent the next year looking for that same experience. More often, I would find maybe one person who had a mic. I made a few buddies and we bopped around pubbie servers. When they kinda died off, I remembered this server that said if you didn't join a squad in 90 secs you would be kicked. I loved it! Forced team play!
I started playing regularly and started noticing some of the same people - Drennyn, Armoredbear, Quasae, Reaper, Hooper, Frozen, BigMclarge, Black_Mirror, and others who started to recognize me. Finally I asked about TG, and was told they weren't a clan, but a community. Check out the forums, etc. Eureka!!!!
Here was a place for mature gamers having a great time! Some thing that was important to me, being somewhat of an older gamer(at 34). I was never made to feel like an idiot for not knowing something like how to install or use Teamspeak, or what a PK was. I didn't even know about exploding barrels and I had played more than a year! It was awesome. It still is.
It has become so much more than a game to me. Its a hobby, and a group of people that I like and care about as much as any sports team I have ever been involved with. I know that if I have a crap day at work or at home, I can hop on for a few rounds and see(and shoot!) some familiar names that don't care if I lost my job, just blew a big sale or had a stressful family day, but instead are willing to laugh and virtually kill each other with glee. Very stress relieving. I also know that I can share my personal and in-game triumphs, and they will be celebrated in kind by a bunch of quality people who also care about me as a member of our community.
Its strange that a thousand people who have never met in person, and who are often seperated by states, countries and continents can have such a profound impact on one's life through a silly video game(s), but indeed, it is true. And I know that many of you feel the same.
So...thank you to the TG community, and I hope that you have had, and will continue to have, the experience that I have!I got yer Dancing With the F**&ing Stars right here!!

Re: First time on TG
Well lets see, its been so long now I'm not sure I can remember back all the way to 2007 but I'll try.
My roommate in college had gotten 2142 for christmas and I tried it out one day and though hey that is pretty fun. After a few days of playing single player and a random server here and there, I found the TG server (recommended by my roommate who played CSS on the TG server every now and then). I stepped into the big leagues with only my laptop and trackball to defend myself with. I got killed constantly, over and over but what could I do, it was only my first FPS on the PC (playing starwars battlefront on my PS2 didn't really count). All I really remember was that |TG-9th| LuckyStrike kept killing me, I don't know why or how but it was usually him. My inner competitiveness burnt up a desire to be better, so I went and got a headset. More game time got me better even if I could only play at 800x600 on low and still drop to unplayable rates in an arty or EMP, my trusty trackball at my side. I began my path with the Irregulars at a time when the 7th were the force on the server and the 3rd were just up and coming. I had the 'joy' of playing with Bommando and the rest of the 7th a few times but I also squadded up with the 3rd more and more often. One day Sc1ence asked me if I would be interested in joining the 3rd if I became a SM, of course I said yes and that I had already put my SM in that day, in all honesty I didn't put it in till 5 minutes after. So I moved up in the world and eventually built a real computer and have slowly progressed through the times and ages here, but I think that is another story.
In short I got pwnd and joind the Irrs and got into the 3rd with a trackball.

Re: First time on TG
Might as well add mine
I am a old player of BF2142 and BF2 used to be in the gamereplays.org clan and then they split into there own [A-S] clan which soon after split into =SGR= so i have had 3 clans names on my back lol.
But i found TG in the most usnusual place on youtube......... yes thats right our little video friend for seeing ppl do stupid things found TG for me i saw team work in a bigger scale where a SM was using a IDS on a anticipater (poor spelling atm) and i thought where is this wonderful server and this is going back to like 2007 area where my computer was slow and poor in all aspects, i managed to get on tg and was in the SM seat once more i knew no one but enjoyed each round untill the clan i was with moved into a new game.
But after a year or more i returned to TG after leaving my old clan and here i am today learning the SL role by trial and error (mainly errors) and dipping my hand into the commander pos a few times but if it hand been for youtube i would still be back in the old clan probs playing CoD full time but instead im here in TG enjoying the nights with random comments and the good old irregs who i have come to love in there own twisted way :P

Re: First time on TG
Hm...my first time on TG? I can honestly tell you I have no recollection of it. I'm pretty sure I joined it completely by accident while looking for a random server to play on. At that point in time I don't remember it having that much of an impact on me. Then my computer busted and I couldn't play 2142 for about a year. When I finally got it back and started playing again somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered something about a server that required people to join squads....thats all I could remember and thats when my search for TG started. It took me a while to find it but when I finally did I was hooked. I played almost exclusively on TG from their out, eventually I decided to put on the tags, and then generally got into better squads and it was even more fun. However I still rarely got in with the people i wanted to get in with(namely Reaper and the 3rd). So I worked to get better and get a name on the server, I put in my application to the Irregs and eventually was accepted. That was probably the 2nd most exciting day of my BF2142 life, I continued to try to improve and eventually it paid off when I heard "changed channel" and shortly thereafter Damontes voice telling me the Mth was forming and they wanted me. That was the most exciting day of my BF2142 life.

Re: First time on TG
My first time on TG was with 2142. I had been on a long gaming hiatus and I wasn't really looking to get back into gaming, but the 2142 box art looked cool with that big, imposing walker on the cover and I picked the game up on a whim. I tried the single player and, since I had zero unlocks, didn't really like it. I went online and tried a few different servers and I could finally see the potential the game might have. After a week of on and off play, I was about to self the game when I stumbed across the TG server.
Since I very much liked the concept of squad level play I always joined squads and never got caught by the kick script, but I saw others getting caught by it. Just the fact that you HAD to join a squad or you couldn't play on the server was very impressive. I played in a few random squads over the next week, most led by TheFatKidDeath, Silver, some guy with a funny accent yelling at everyone, think his name was Bommando and also some Waaagh! squads led by johnflenaly where he pretty much got in an FAV at the start of the round, yelled WAAAGH and everyone laughed and had fun but at the same time focused. Of course I had to get a mic so I could start talking and yelling WAAAGH too. I sucked at twitch and my KDR was atrocious, but nobody cared. Nice!
Over the the next week or so I found I was utterly hooked on gaming again and was having a great time, but only on the TG server. I decided that I liked the server and wanted to see what the website was like (found the site on the server banner) and I became a supporting member that day or the next, not to reserve a slot on the server but to show my support for the community and its ideals.
A mere two weeks later the 9th MID formed and I was one of the lucky ones to get in on the ground floor. From then on I've been hooked on TG more than I was hooked on 2142.

Re: First time on TG
A buddy of mine shoved a copy of 2142 in my hands and told me to go play it. We server hopped together, slowly learning the ropes of the game. After school, I got a message over Skype; "I just found the BEST SERVER EVER! People use teamwork and everything!" We both jumped in Foxlion's squad and I was hooked from then. I played on the sever and joined the forums about a month later.
I loved it. I grabbed up an SM to get in at night when the server was full. At the time of my joining, the AIR had a recruitment thread up. I joined up.
The rest is history.
