I read the FAQ about joining a squad, but how exactly do I figure out what the squads are?

If you're asking "how do you seee who's in this squad?", then there's a down arrow next to the Join button. Clicking it you will see a list of players who are in it

Those are inhouse squads (IHS).
All IHS are for supporting members only. The Irregulars are the only IHS that don't require supporting membership

Some of them are for other games.

These are the ones that are still with 2142
3rd (special forces detachment)
Irregulars (TG-Irr) the only ones that dont require supporting membership
21st (death dealers)
E1st (European)
55th (Infantry division)
101 (TG-SC siege corps)
128th (command control)
999th (Logistic support TG-Mth)

Many members aren't part of any IHS. I have many friends who aren't part of the Mth, but I play with them frequently nontheless.. so you really don't need to jump into an IHS until you know you're ready and know what to expect

Before you consider joining one, I would play with them first.
From personal experience, I can say that choosing an IHS shouldn't be taken lightly..

See the "squad" tab is next to the "kit" tab near the top left corner. Just click on it.

I forgot just how useful it is to have pub raids. I wonder if we should do that more often.

If the server lag issue was fixed, then maybe we should consider doing pub raiding nights...

Awesome, Rocon! Welcome to the TG forums! We are glad you found us. Sorry you had to team up with Fruvous and O'Niell though - I promise we're actually generall nice people, despite what you may have experienced

. Take your time, get to know people around here. Don't worry about IHS yet. Like Fruvous said, we very often game with those outside our IHSs. Join our Team Speak channel, that's where the most fun chatter is between rounds, and you can pipe up and say "Hey, Let me in your squad!" so you can find out who you play best with. Oh, and watch out for pirates!
