That everything can be unlocked immedatly as a server option. I don't care if it's ranked or not, I just don't like being a point whore to get new stuff. In BF2, it's not really that bad because the new weapons are not THAT unbalanced. But if you have to rank up to unlock basics like C4 packs and defibs, well... a wag of the finger to EA. Not to mention the unbalaced stuff like stealth camo and tracking mines.

Anyway I saw this quote at the end of this preview and found it funny.

From what I've seen of 2142 most of the new tricks and strategies (and many of the old) aren't going to work unless you have unlocks. I can wish as much as I want but EA isn't going to give us enough control over a ranked server to really make a teamwork oriented TG server.

If we really want that to change we need to start a campaign. EA and Dice can encourage players to cooperate as much as they want but it’s not going to work unless there’s a community of teamwork oriented players. You just can’t create that community on a ranked server because the rules are designed to make every BF2 experience homogenous and that homogeneity is based on pubbie servers.

I guess you can call it my love of RPG's. In rpg's, when you kills stuff you get experience, you go up in level and gain more powerful equipment. Now, combining that with an FPS is friggin awesome in mt book. Honestly i couldnt care less what "rank" i am in the world, but gaining new weapons and gadgets and dog tags and badges and medals....well thats just fun to me since i know im going to dump a TON of hours into this game, i want something to show for it. I know probably no one agrees with me but thats how i feel.

That said, i guess well just wait to see what happens. Beta should be starting next month though

my understanding is that TG want an unranked server for 2 reasons
1) custom squad up or get kicked script
2) enforce TG style server rules (considerably stricter than the offical EA rules of engagement that ranked servers are supposed to abide by)

The whole unlocks topic raises an interesting topic for the admins

BF2 can work for TG because the private class can do everything that the SL wants them too,
eg engineer for mines, medic revive etc
the unlocks just enable better weapons and greater kill rate etc., so disabling unlocks can work for us

It appears that on BF2142 eveything is going to be an unlock even the medic revive pads

If unranked servers can decide the level of unlocks, then where does the line get drawn ?
I seem to remember EA have a vague plan for unranked servers to allocate the unlocks that people have earned through playing on ranked servers.

But with 50 unlocks, people are only going to want to play on ranked servers

This is all very tricky for TG

and i bet TG admins cannot offer a real plan because unranked servers capabilities are low on the list of DICE's priorities, so they wont decide until a week or two before release or even after release.

So we will have to just wait and not hassle our admins for answers that they cant give becuase DICE havent decided

....bit of a rant there...my 2 cents worth

There's much more that we currently do that probably can't be done on a ranked server, like the supporting member reserved slot script, icky's dgm script that alters things we don't like (grenade throw distance, sniper rifle accuracy, Sharqi helos, etc.) and gives admins the power to remove objects (scan, arty, UAV) and vehicles mid-game, increased ticket ratio so we have epic 1 hour battles instead of forgettable 20 minute skirmishes, and probably some other things that don't come to mind right now.

Thanks for your post, you hit the nail on the head...especially the increased ticket ratio.

FYI, the admins are on page 3 of discussions about BF2142

Really only speculation at this point since we don't have any real information. Hearing that shock paddles are an unlock though is REALLY a bummer

If EA won't allow us to use unlocks on unranked servers, seems like the medic would be a pretty useless kit. Guess I should say "allow us to unlock all weapons for everyone".

Who knows what the future holds...
We will play it TG-style if it is possible, if not, we will not play it. There is no point in speculating on playing without unlocks and such, since we know nothing concrete about the game at this point.

Didn't they say that there would be an open beta in August?

It does suck that you have to unlock the paddles, but im sure thats going to be high on everyone unlock list. I know thats the first thing im getting.

Also, there is no "medic" class anymore. Its just assault. But you can become a medic if you bring along your paddles. Its all about customizing your kit on the fly. Recon is sniper + spec ops. Engy is Engy + AT. And then support. So say youre in a squad and 2 people pick engy. You could ask one to go engineer (use engy toys), and have the other go AT or AA. Each kit holds much flexibility.

I do also understand how we have all those scripts and such. I also like the epic 2 hour battles, along with everything else the scripts allows us to do. I also love playin with all you guys. Dammit, why cant i have it all?! *pout*

Just speculation like everyone else, but given how much this game will depend on unlocks for its very basic functioning AND that EA will be hosting an open beta, if the dev's haven't intended to allow unlocks on an unranked server, I'm 90% sure they will end up with a solution that achieves a similar result.

For all the EA bashing, DICE/EA has done a pretty good job of improving and listening to the mature community on items such as squad hoping, dolphin diving etc and I don't see them ignoring all the unranked server admins in the world that will be screaming if they limit the game arbitrarily.

My personal guess and hope is that they will allow the admin to suscribe to an "alternative" ranking system that allows the server admin to set their own ranking and unlock schedules. I know they disabled this in 1.3 and will be reintroducing support in 1.4 for the system built around bf2.
