interview with Dice about the beta.

DICE said that "We are going to throw out an open beta in the beginning of August. The beta is predominantly to learn about large scale issues, i.e. when we have [tens of thousands] of people playing at the same time, eliminating some of the problems we have encountered after launch previously in the franchise. Keep your eyes open to join.
    Release: Early August
Open: Yes it is, anyone can download it and start bug hunting.
Size. Don't know at this stage.

I think a better response to this would have been"big", considering BF2 came on 4 CDs

Boy am I glad to have a DVD reader.

I wonder if they will use BitTorrent, if they don't their servers will get ridiculously slow.

Yeah. 3 to 4 GB doesn't really take that long to download as long as the hosting side has plenty of bandwith.

Re: Open Beta 1st half of August ? ? ?

Remember when Microsoft released the Vista beta for download, their servers were struggling on that because they refused to use BitTorrent. This isn't quite on the same scale, but there are going to be a LOT of people downloading it at the same time, not sure how their servers will hold up.

    Thanks for that Morethanben/Undead77

So "open" really does mean "OPEN" to all

So the next question is hows the download going to work....you've already moved onto this

    Can you advise me
    I have 0.5 Mb broadband
No subscription to fileplanet or any of the other download sites
I've never used file down load programs like Filezilla
I'm not the only one using broadband in my house, the max time I can leave the computer downloading is about 9 hrs
so my question is how can I download 3-4 Gb in several downloading sessions as such?

If it's a http download, you will need a program like Flashget which can resume downloads, as long as the server supports it.

FTP, can't remember if it supposts resume, but if there's an ftp option there'll probably be a http options as well.

BitTorrent, resuming is basically built in.

Re: Open Beta 1st half of August ? ? ?

I was just looking at fileplanet, its $6.95 for one month
I dont want to be frustrated downloading the open beta, when it comes out I'm just gonna want to play asap
from my understanding fileplanet is fast and allows resuming of dowloads
for me that is worth a one off $6.95 (£3.72=Big Mac meal*)

so if someone has fileplanet membership, does fileplanet have resume of downloads feature?

    * I'm vegetarian, I dont actually eat big Mac's, I just chose that as something people can relate money to worldwide

    http://www.fileplanet.com/dlm2/help/

Resume Downloads - Loose connection and lost your download? Never fear! The Download Manager can resume file transfers! Just click the "retry" button on a disconnected download and resume your place immediately.

That is for their download manager, it probably works for any download manager, but you may as well use theirs anyway.

    EDIT: Just found this:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/help/queue.shtml

Can I resume downloads with a download manager?
Yes. But you will need to resume your download within 24 hours of starting it or you'll have to wait in line again.

So you can use any download manager

Thankyou Lorian, I knew you would come up trumps,
I've decided to go for fileplanet, at the small one off cost, it will deliver the open beta to me quickly and with the least fuss.

    EDIT
I just clicked add to Lorian rep and got......
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Lorian again.
I wondered why i kept seeing this phrase on the forums

Wonder if TG would host such a large file for their member downloads?
