I bet the beta is similar to BF2's demo, in that it will be 1 map. It's additional content like more maps that inflates the size so quickly. If they keep it to one map and it's using the same engine as BF2 (which it is), I would imagine it would be fairly close to the BF2 demo size in general.

Now, retail release, that's an entirely different ball-game and I will be happy as well to have my DVD drive.

That's a good point actually, the BF2 demo is 546MB, but they may include all the maps, because there can be map specific bugs...

i highly doubt they will have more than one map, but if they do, thats cool too! They mainly want people to find bugs in gameplay and feedback on the weapon balance. I read somewhere that the weapons are going to have a "heavy", "regular", and "light" varaiations. Not necessarily the same weapon, but...ah well heres an example totally made up -

Assault has 3 different guns (with unlocks).

One is the HK24 Assault gun which is the "light" gun, meaning its very accurate or possibly a larger clip, yet doesnt do much dmg per shot.

The TRG101 Assault Rifle is the all around "regular" weapon. It does decent dmg per shot and is pretty accurate.

And the YRP9 Assault Rifle is the "Heavy" gun, meaning it does damn good dmg per shot, but its accuracy might be lacking or a smaller magazine.

It doing it this way, it keeps there from being a "uber" weapon as each has its pros and cons. A MUCH better system than BF2's guns which basically just get more powerful with each unlock. So instead of everyone using the PKM, you use the gun that you feel most comfortable with.

Now, for this beta, is there only certain servers we can join? Just wondering if TG plans on hosting it or at least the demo.

Well 1.4 beta for bf2 has only a select number of servers. So EA may do the same thing on here, they'll just host a bunch of servers, in europe and US.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing for TG. We know there is a good sized following for 2142 at TG, so if the above is the case, we present our play style on public servers and use it as a recruiting tool. Limited servers means good exposure to a rapt audience.

TG will definitely be hosting this for our supporting members. So if you're an SM, don't worry about having to find the download. I'm even considering offering it as a torrent if it really IS as big as some are saying, but personally I find it very hard to believe that we're going to see a 3-4GB beta.

There's more spin in this thread than in the news reporting at the end of a political convention.

There most likely will. But it many cases games like this are hosted for supporting-members only. Especially if there is a severely limited number of servers and a lot of TG players interested. We're definitely going to be hosting servers for the full game though.

I'm definitely going to participate in the beta. I figured I would enjoy the game but after watching that 15 minute video and interview with the dev team I'm really excited about this release.
