You need a subscription to get a Auth Key otherwise the client is useless. If they were really serious about people not downloading it they wouldn't put it up for the public. :P
It's curious because the BETA page (Battlefield 2142 on FilePlanet) still hasn't been updated so you can't sign up for the beta. I guess they are just getting it ready.
EDIT: Looks like they hid it. This defintely shows the BETA will be starting soon though.-----

Well, they took the link offline, I don't think that it was suppose to be posted today. I've still got it on the download though. Better to have it now, hopefully its the actual client they'll still use when we get our beta keys.

Well the thread that got started on totalbf2142.com grew to over 400replies in like 4hrs. Some guy started a torrent, and its legal to, because fileplanet had the file available for the public to download as well. Even [DICE]CKMC posted over there, and said
I am very glad to see that the fervor for Battlefield has not died down at all.
I look forward to gathering all of your dog tags into a nice tidy pile.
So many people wanted the beta client it had/has 30+ peers going.
He also posted,Fileplanet subscribers get first crack along with those who receive VIP passes. There is no "here is how you get a VIP pass" as we are distributing them through a number of channels.
Basically FP subscribers have the most reliable method to gain access but there are ways for everyone to get in whether they subscribe or not. As the Beta progresses we will provide more information on when the open portion of the beta will begin.
I will be playing as [DICE]B15H09. Feel free to buddy list me in game so that I can search you out and get your tags.
