Re: Beta Impressions
I think if you want to take the risk of placing one of the MANY spawn points available to your team smack dab in the middle of enemy territory and then wander off without defending it at all, and then all of your squad mates decide to spawn on it even when there are plenty of other viable spawn points and nobody is forcing them to drop straight into the lion's den, well, you DESERVE to be spawn camped. The only possible way an enemy would ever be able to spawn camp your beacon is if you deployed it, defenseless, in their territory, far from teammates.

Re: Beta Impressions
Heading out to work, but I'll toss up some impressions later tonight. As a quick point however, I'm leaning more towards Snail's feelings towards the game and I'm not really getting the "Arcadey" feeling some other's have experienced.
More to follow.....It's all in the Reflexes.

Re: Beta Impressions
Watching the videos on various sites, I don't really see what is so arcadey about it. It seems like it would be slightly less so if there is no artillery or bombers to blindside your entire squad. After 4 months or so of not playing BF2, I played it this weekend and found artillery to just generally be a 'bad idea'. The commander should be more of an overview/tactical position and should not be able to really influence a battle directly like that. Not to mention dying from something that you really can't counter is frustrating. So it is good to hear they've removed that aspect from 2142. Then again, i'm sure they've added something equally as poweful such as the orbital strike, or whatever. I just hope it isn't an INSTA DEATH uncounterable 'Frustration strike'.
It sounds like it just disables, etc, which I guess wouldn't be as bad.

Re: Beta Impressions
LOL... did you guys sign a Disclosure Agreement? It doesn't sound like anything is being left Non-Disclosed.

Re: Beta Impressions
They didn't make me sign or even tell me about an NDA... but the understanding I've read on the forums is no video or screenshots. I will tend to not discuss bugs and certainly not exploits as they aren't indicative of the final product and that just seems fair.
[edit: Just checked and my fileplanet beta email said nothing about an NDA and I don't see one on the fileplanet boards (other than talk about an NDA)]

Re: Beta Impressions
orbital strike is basically a huge EMP pulse which disables all vehicles. Im not sure if it affects infantry, but not as far as i can tell. You got it rigth BHack. Without the arty and bombers you get killed a lot less from the air and more from infantry/vehicles, but at least thats something you can counter/deal with.

Re: Beta Impressions
So with the game coming out so soon is the beta even worth trying?

Re: Beta Impressions
Well, the beta is free, compared to a limited demo or a game that costs money, plus with the beta you get the opportunity to find bugs and help get them fixed. Then again, for all we know the beta is going to be subscription only, which obviously isn't free. We'll see.

Re: Beta Impressions
Phase 4 is free for everyone. We're in Phase 2 right now. Phase 4 should be 2-3weeks away.

Re: Beta Impressions
There's no artillery, except every f****** vehicle has a weapon with a large enough radius and damage to be considered moving artillery. So you end up dying out of nowhere more than in BF2, except it's coming from vehicles and not the sky.
The EU tank's secondary function is a zoom about twice as powerful as the M24 so you can effectively tank snipe from across the map. I cannot count the times I've been defending a flag with a functioning squad, with UAVs on our position, only to suddenly fall over and die from a EU tank I can't even hear fire. Imagine a tank at Reactor towers in Dalian being able to snipe people at the main entrance with large radius explosive shells. Fun.
If you liked BF2 on TG, I'm telling you, you will enjoy the beta/game for the first 15 hours or so (maybe more when there's more than 1 map), but after that I can't see anyone who likes TG BF2 playing this game. It's fun cause it's new and you don't care about the deaths/random bs because you're trying new weapons/vehicles. Except once that new shiny coat of paint wears off and you're more experienced with the game, unlike BF2, you keep getting blown up randomly and not being able to do anything about it because all vehicles have incredibly powerful weapons (unlike 50 cals in BF2 which are a bitch to kill moving targets with, every vehicle-mounted weapon is as accurate as a tank driver's machinegun in BF2). All vehicles also have Active Defense which is a 5 seconds shield that absorbs every single thing you throw at it. It's like smoke but with a longer recharge. Basically, even if there's 5 ATs at a flag, you can drive straight in, pop active defense and blow them up before they can even damage you. Not to mention AT seems to do half or 2/3rds the damage of AT in vanilla BF2 so taking down a vehicle is really hard.
And that's not even talking about the pods. Interviews say the pods won't be in conquest but still I think the game is just too flawed right now from a TG BF2 player's POV. It'll appeal to a large audience but I don't think that audience isn't the one I played BF2 here with.
And you know me, it's not like I'm a bad player, so these opinions aren't based on someone new to the game or genre dying a lot because he isn't experienced. Did I mention dolphin diving/prone spamming is back to 1.2's in 2142? No delay on proning or weapon firing whatsoever.
It would be a great game, if they slow everything down by a lot.
