Tag Naming Conventions

Considering all the confusion going on in the Veteran Status thread, I propose that we try to get a consensus on naming conventions for TG players.

Facts:
  • Soldier names cannot be longer than 14 characters.
  • Clan tags cannot be longer than 6 characters.
  • Neither can contain special characters. = was the only special character I was able to enter.

So, I will add a poll for options here.

I went with TGBommando as my main name, since there is not enough room in the clan tag for some of the longer division numbers while still looking readable. It also offers more flexibility with how we construct the division tag, since we can change it on the fly.

So, I was thinking along the lines of =7th= TGBommando. It looks clean and all TG players would be listed together if the prefix was omitted.

Post your opinions and vote if you like, so new players have an idea of which names they should go with. We should work this out before too many ranks are accrued, so if someone needs to change, it's not a big deal.

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

What if you are not affiliated with a squad? For non squad members how about either TG_Bubba or TG-Bubba as an example. Or would you prefer =TG=Bubba?

You could just leave out the clan tag entirely: TGBubba. The main reason I suggested leaving the TG out of the clan tag was to leave enough room for all the possible numbers while still defining the tag.

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

Well, I've just been using [TG] UnDeaD. Since I already reserved my name, I'd probably pick TG12th UnDeaD, or 12thTG even for a choice. I'll vote later though.

Btw bommando, I heard there was a server located in LA, there was an aussie player that said he had better luck as far as ping on the server. So one of the US servers should show up yellow I think.

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

I think TG7th Bommando would be the best route, it allows for long(er) names and uses the clan bit for it's intended use.

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

For BF2 the game automatically puts a space between the clan tag and the username, this may be the same for BF2142.

if the clan tag is 6 characters then TG & in-house squad isnt going to fit, eg TG.7th is 6, so thats fine, but TG.12th is 7 characters

I suggest putting TG in the clan tag & in-house squad in the username
eg
clan tag as =TG (3 characters)
username as 7th=Bommando (13 characters)
game puts space in , so end result is
=TG 7th=Bommando

with this system, if a new player found and stayed at TG then they don't have to discard their account and loose valuable unlocks,
they could just add to the clan tag =TG=

downside is that if someone joined an inhouse clan then they would need to create a new account and loose valuable unlocks (assuming TG has ranked server)

downside is that the username has less than 14 max as the in-house squad takes up characters
eg 7th= leaves 10 characters for username
eg 12th= leaves 9 characters for username
eg E1st= leaves 9 characters for username

PS veterans program allowed underscore _ in the username

EDIT
after reading this through it may be a bit much
as Lorian said the 6 characters of the clan tag should work, although it may look slightly squashed
TG12th (6 characters)
TG33rd (6 characters)
TGE1st (6 characters)
TG7th (5 characters)
and as game puts space in you would get
TG7th Bommando

advantages are that if people join TG or TG people join an in-house squad, then people just change their clantag and the sacred unlocks are safe

I vote for "TG7th Bommando". It had a sense of hierarchy and logic to it: Community>Division>Player

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

beta testers should file a bug about the tag being 1 character too short

as for the convention... hard to say - I can't say I like any of em guess I'm too used to how nice it looks in BF2

hmmmmmmm...

TG12th WhiskeySix
TG[12] WhiskeySix
TG|12| WhiskeySix
TG=12= WhiskeySix
=TG=12 WhiskeySix

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

The simplest, most straightforward is best. I think that's the 3rd one on the poll. Non-inhouse guys can just leave out the number and its suffix.

[edit:] Doh, see Rocketpunch's reason. I think it's pretty good.

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

It's kind of importnat to know how they will be handling the clan prefix. But barring that, I like option #3.

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

I believe "TG7th" is the max characters (5) in the beta for a prefix but it could be 6 and yes a space is added between the prefix and name. I like this solution the best (though it will make it a bit more administratively burdensome on us to get our buddy lists going (versus just searching on TG) as you can't search on a clan prefix.

I like having TG first in the prefix showing solidarity and then the in-house affiliation with the remaining 3-4 characters.. yes they are one character short for the 12th etc. if they only have 5 characters instead of 6.

This option also makes since as they have shortened the allowed size of the character names (without prefix) really forcing us to use the clan prefix this time around.

Re: Tag Naming Conventions

How will the Irregs use this? As of right now we are supposed to create a new profile using |TG-Irr| as the beginning of the name since it is too long for the prefix. Using the old method only leaves 6 characters for the soldier name. That is way too tight. Should we use TG-Irr or something as a prefix instead?
