good point, that's fair

It's the exact same deal here... If I'm a company that's bought an advert in a game, I need to know that the ad is being seen... not that it's "probably being seen" or "in a good spot on the map, trust us". It makes complete sense that EA needs to know how many cross-hairs linger on an in-game billboard.

You may argue that this is the top of a slippery slope, and that's fine - but this is harmless IMO.... It's not like we have to enter a credit-card number to create a BFx soldier name. Take off the tin-foil hats guys.

It's not so much that it's a slippery slope, but that the proliferation of advertisements has already gone too far in my opinion, and it's worse with no consumer reciprication. I really have no problem with this being in BF2142 specifically, if I recall correctly it was in SWAT 4 and I enjoyed that game, but like Bommando said, we're getting nothing out of this. I put up with ads on my favortie web sites because I know it keeps them free/alive and I'm fine with that. But this game is still going to cost $49.99 whether there's advertisements or not. I'm not worried about ads being beamed into my brain a la Minority Report, but I am worried about the increasing lack of privacy and the already skewed power relationships between corporations and the modern consumer.

Re: Spyware: It's in the Game

You know, they could have offered us a choice to install this spyware. "Once installed, you get a free unlock!" I know a lot of players wouldn't pass that up

Re: Spyware: It's in the Game

Just want to throw this out there. If you happen to have read this before buying the game then OK, you now have the option not to buy it.

What happens to the folks that downloaded this directly from EA Downloader? Was there a "pop up" warning about the monitoring software or did it just install without giving you the option?

Re: Spyware: It's in the Game

So what do we have to do to actually block those ips and ports?

Re: Spyware: It's in the Game

Well frist you need a piece of networking hardware between your broadband modem and your actualy machine called a router. Your router manufacturer's site will tell you the IP to type inito your browser to access your router directly. Once in this router management page follow the links on the side to for something that sounds like 'port blocking' or IP blocking. There should be fields in which you can enter in the provided IP and port numbers. Save the configuration. How this helps as I am an only slightly less confused noob.

I don't care about the ads either. If EA wants to make more money, they can go ahead. This is capitalism. I didn't care when SWAT 4 included ads. I don't care that BF2142 has ads. I don't care that TG has ads. I didn't care when Opera had ads.

Are we only griping about the fact that EA will be making more money? They'll only be making money if you're playing the game. I'll only be playing the game if it's good.

Spyware Infested BF 2142

'Battlefield 2142' Spyware Infested? Posted by Rainier on Monday, October 16 @ 21:13:32 PDT
Battlefield 2142 is starting to show up in stores left and right, and some early birds who managed to get their hands on a retail copy. Inside the box a slip of paper warns people that BF2142 will install monitoring software which reports "anonymous" information, such as IP and surfing habits, back to advertising companies in order to generate in-game ads in line with your possible purchasing interests. The flyer does say if you do not wish this to happen, to not install the game on an internet connected computer, which seems quite silly for a online multiplayer title.
