Re: Fiirst Impressions on retail

im really diggin it so far. only down side is the TG server isnt as fun right off the bat =(. I signed in on the TG server and realized alot of the game is in the unlocks. the advantage is that you rank up and get upgrades really quickly so it shouldnt take long to get all the full glory of the game going.

Re: Fiirst Impressions on retail

I pouted for a bit then went out and bought 2142.

I played it a lot this evening. I have a big gun now. I like my big gun.

The one thing I don't like is how it sort of pigeon-holes you into certain roles. In BF2 you have people with varying abilities in kits, but in a pinch you can get anyone to go AT, or medic, or engineer. They don't need to be experts... But here if I go assault or AT and don't have my big gun to run around with, I feel kind of ineffective. I guess eventually I'll unlock more complete kits, but until then I won't be as effective in some of the vehicle heavy maps as I could be.

On a less personal note, it seems like unlocks are going to make a huge difference on Titan assaults and defending. Defending one earlier, the claymores, the sentry guns, the force fields... it makes for some interesting standoffs. It's interesting that we were defending our Titan very effectively at the beginning, and we kept the other team from taking out our reactor core, only to have our Titan destroyed by missiles. That's a tradeoff teams are going to have to make... how much do you invest your people in defending the titan vs. holding silos? And while it's very easy to get to the ground from the Titan, it's a lot harder to shift from defending a silo back to defending the Titan if the other team makes a big push. It's good though. An astute commander with some disciplined squads could really turn the course of a fight at the end.

Are any advertisements showing up yet in the game?

As far as flexibility in kits, that's what field upgrades are for. As you play as a squad you get free unlocks for duration of the map. So you can put them towards immediate needs such as AT toys etc.

Re: Fiirst Impressions on retail

I really like it, the upgrades and new titan mode just result in a lot of diffrent outcomes of the same game. One team can be behind but if they defend their Titan well and assault the other Titan they can still win.

The graphics are great and a step up from BF2 not a big step but still a step up.

The squad dynamic have been improved with the pick of unlocks and the field upgrades. The game also genrally runs better than BF2 except if you have a lot of people on the same Titan, if you do it will start to lag a little, still playable.

The balance between infantry and vehicles is better than BF2, no more constant bombing. The game generaly seem more balanced than BF2. During my 6 hours gaming session yesterday I did not feel frustrated at any time with getting bombed or killed by artillery which is a great change from BF2.

There is more places to hide for infantry which helps the grunt on the ground from being killed by artillery or enemy vehicles. You would think the future would be bad for the grunt but BF2142 actually brings new life to the grunt.

Even playing on a public server it was not to bad and people actually played in squads. I think that when we get that Ranked TG server online this game will just plain rock!

Problems:
I got the lost connection to the Master Server once but only once during 6 hours of playing. We also had some problem getting VOIP to work on some servers that had VOIP.

I expect with one patch or two they will get the few remaining issues solved.

Lets play!

Oh, that's true. After an hour of playing in our little TG squad last night I had way more field upgrades than I knew what to do with. On the other hand, the field upgrade interface kind of confuses me; it wouldn't let me pick up RDX...

But that's sort of what frustrates me about the whole thing. Everybody is going to want to play ranked to get the good gear, but we won't have a lot of control over the ranked server... I'm afraid we'll have to deal with a lot of smacktarded behaviour on the ranked server because nobody wants to play unranked.

Next time you play, hide in some bushes. It does some interesting dithering/partial transparency which makes it easier to conceal yourself while still being able to see. On the other hand, while I do have a pretty high-end computer, I was sort of disappointed that I can run all the graphics at max with AA. Not much room for the engine to grow with better hardware. :-/

@jepzilla
I heard that you can allow the unlocks you acquired on ranked servers to be used on unranked server. So after a few hours play on a ranked server one should have a fairly capable kit to use on our unranked games. Of course that's not optimal but it's a pretty good compromise imo.

PS. Just picked up my copy, can't wait for work to be over to get some play time

Oh, I'm sure you can... but if you want to keep getting new unranks, it's more time on the ranked server. Supposedly it takes hundreds and hundreds of hours of playing to unlock everything. Basically, I've done the gear/level grind in MMORPGs, and I hate that I have to do the same thing in a BF game.

What I would prefer would be more powerful gear, but that is a lot harder to use. Like, jets, and choppers, and artillery pieces in BF2/POE/etc... it takes a while to learn how to use them effectively, and they're all extremely powerfull once you do... but there's nothing really preventing you from trying! I can respect someone who's mastered something tricky and makes great use of it (althouh I might curse them a little ), but it's just frustrating when you lose because someone else has been playing the game longer. If I wanted to deal with that crap I'd PvP in WoW. :P

Re: Fiirst Impressions on retail

For those of you that lag on the titan, what system specs do you have? I have an e6600, 2 GB RAM and a x1900XTX and I didn't lag on the demo titan...I'm wondering if it is a lag/coding issue or bad graphics code that some hardware can't handle.

Oh, and on the Titan. Does it appear that people can shoot through the hallway support beams? I had that problem with the demo. You'd die without ever seeing the guy.

Re: Fiirst Impressions on retail

I got a Opteron 170 at 2.6 Ghz 2 GB memory and a 1900XTX card. Running at 1920*1200 with everything on. The lag only shows up for me when a lot of poeple are on the same titan.
