Re: Unlocks and you (and us)

I heard a conversation over TeamSpeak the other night about what to do about unlocks: should you go ladder by ladder or pick an unlock from every kit and experiment? Personally, I chose to have my frag grenades first. In BF2, frags were so useful in choke points and flag defends, so it was natural for me to get that first. These are all my opinion, but I think the essential unlocks are:

    1. Frags. Player Ability, all purpose explosive, for defense or offense.

    2. Defibrillator. Assault kit, keeps players alive and racks up points quickly. Plus, there's nothing more embarassing than a Defibrillator kill. It actually has a bit more range than the knife, so think about that when going CQC. Dogtags or an overall hillarious and shameful death??

    3. Energy shield. Support kit, when you don't have cover, just make your own. Very useful on Titan defenses. Throw these down in a corridor for cover, and they also serve as a short wall that enemies must jump over, giving you more time to defend.

    4. RDX Demolition Packs. Recon Kit, c4's offspring. If you used c4 in BF2, you know how to use this stuff.

    5. Squad Leader Beacon. Player Ability, a mobile spawn point you can laid down anywhere. If you want to continually pressure a point, throw down a beacon so when you or your troops die, they can continue the attack at that position.

Also, never choose a weapon unlock (aka Lambert Carbine or Ganz HMG) without trying it out first. How do you do this, you ask? Unlock all the sidearms like mines, advanced utilities (meds, ammo, repair) below the desired weapon, and work your way into a Field Upgrade in game. This should give you a good idea of whether or not you should unlock a certain weapon permanently before something else. For right now, I'm holding off unlocking the AA unlock for the engineer kit and considering my other options. If you have it already, tell me a bit more about it so I can make up my mind.

Re: Unlocks and you (and us)

I think the sprint ability is often overlooked. My order of unlock (and I would do it again)

    1. Frags
    2. Defibs
    3. Stamina Increase
    4. Advanced Med Hub (What player doesn't need to get healed every 10 seconds? Do this unlock to make yours and everone elses play last longer).
    5. SL Beacon

I would also NOT unlock any final tier weapons. Within 30 minutes in a TG squad you should have a ton of field upgrades. Save that unlock for something that makes your character more flexible and use the field upgrade to grab those questionably useful gun unlocks.

Yeah, can't say I care too much about the guns under support. I can lay down some fire, hit a guy multiple times with it and still get outshot by somone with an assault kit. To be honest, I'm thinking of re-doing my soldier (if its possible) and I'll probably take Shiners advice and stick with basics I can use, and save the fancy toys for field upgrades.

I believe dogtags will net you an extra career point per rank of the person you killed. Also, there's the collector's badge and pin to consider when it comes to getting up the ranks as quickly as possible.

In fact, its totally possible to get a few ranks easily by just creating a game where people spawn next to each other and farm the knife kills. Do it next to a silo or capture point under squad orders and you get even more career points towards your unlocks by amassing squad bonus and SL bonus points. Have your CO order the attack/defense and you also net the CO points with +commander points. In fact, its probably the most exploitable way to amass career points ever.

I'm really starting to hate the Recon kit players. Mostly because in PUBs they steal all the jeeps and turn them into bomb cars with or without your knowledge. Load it up with RDX and either drive it yourself or wait for a team mate to get in and get close to something like a tank or walker and BOOM instant kills. Slapping RDX on the weak spots of vehicles in the motor pool is also annoying. Nothing like RDX going off the back of your tank or bottom of your walker/APC the moment you spawn and get in to annoy you greatly.

    Tarenth,

I'm pretty sure TG frowns upon actions like that. Get on the teamspeak server before you join 2142 and let an admin know when someone is acting like that.

Re: Unlocks and you (and us)

Hence why I used the term exploitable and not easiest.

On the flip side some of the easiest career points can be made as a recon with health and ammo hubs deployed nearby. (If your PUB teammate are being stingy just swipe the assault and support kits off your kills and deploy your own) Using APMs and RDX defenses at choakpoints will net you explosive kills and killing people with your handgun will work towards your handgun badge. Its pretty easy too since the handgun is apparently more damaging and accurate than the stock assualt rifle.

Doing this on titan defense will also net you a few titan defender badges which come in at 20 points each and can be won multiple times per round.

Is there any need to explain why I like titan matches so much?

Re: Unlocks and you (and us)

Here is my current strategy on unlocks. Green are currently unlocks with yellow as my field upgrades. I've noticed that I have so many good options for field upgrades I really struggle in-game to select the right one (if I get the AT gun invariably the next map is infantry only).

Future unlocks are denoted with a number for the order I'm planning on taking and orange shading indicates the Field unlocks I will have when I've achieved all 9 future unlocks.
Any comments on the selection order of my next unlocks?

My understanding is that around the ~20 unlock it gets much harder get the remaining weapons.

Everyone should get the first three player ability unlocks right away. They are the most useful byfar. The difference is huge once you realise, "Hey, I can run more then 2 meters without running out of breath". Of course if you use light armour it woudn't be as noticeable.

If you wear light armour and have the sprint unlocks, you can run halfway across some of those infantry maps. It's crazy.

After getting the bronze and silver handgun badge I can safely say that while it may do the damage, the ROF leaves a lot to be desired Only way to use handgun well is to use it with 'I'm holding a knife' mentality of sneaking around people's backs.

Question Re: Unlocks and you (and us)

How's the Koenig H-AVR on the Engineer kit? I used it briefly on a pick up kit and one shot on the back of a PAC tank and it was down! Was alot of fun to use

I'm working on the left side of the Engineer tree. Thoughts on that weapon?

I'm ~200 points from the AVR. I'd have it already but I got distracted by how useful the grenades are and unlocked them.

Now, if I could get into the damn game I might've been able to get that new toy tonight, but it's not destined to be.

the H-AVR is by far the most useful gun unlock.

Re: Unlocks and you (and us)

H-AVR (Heavy Anti-Vehicle Rifle) is a very very nice gun. However, like all things it does come at a trade off.

Most notable is the loss of the 'one hit kill' to FAVs. The H-AVR will knock a FAV down to the burning stage giving the driver and passangers a few seconds to bail. This is especially true if the car is on the move since the momentum will carry its blast radius past the people who bailed and leave them relatively unharmed.

Both a blessing and a curse is the loss of the 'lock on' tone people in vehicles get. Its a blessing because you can sneak up and track them for those sweet spot shots. Its a curse because there's nothing more amusing than pointing your rocket at a tank in the middle of a field and watching it freak out because they've got tone.

The H-AVR is also less forgiving and capable of pulling off trick shots with. It fires a fast moving dumb projectile at a target that makes hitting at range a lot more of a skill and luck factor, but if you miss its definately a miss. The stock rocket will track the target slightly as long as you have your crosshairs on it which means you can actually shoot from the side and hit the back of a tank by making it turn into it. ^_^

I'd still take the H-AVR over the stock rockets though since it has a slightly faster reload speed and since its 'fire and forget' you can duck back into cover faster.

Re: Unlocks and you (and us)

I currently have all of the Assault Kit unlocked (both branches) and I particularly like being Assault and Medic. I find myself supporting the squad as a whole and/or the squad leader (on those detached missions). I'm currently working on getting my player abilities up so I can more fully act as an Assault based support member for each TG squad I'm in.

Also as Assault, I can do some medium sniping or medium commando work.

Mainly I find myself as Assault and trying my best to maximize on the various roles Assault kit can provide.
