Is having an unranked server worth it?

I don't know what sort of resources are being spent on it, but my wager is that our unranked server will mostly remain dead. Having 2 ranked servers, however, wouldn't be a bad idea - one titan one conquest.

My reasoning is that I seriously doubt anyone will play unranked in this game. In BF2 it meant nothing because the unlocks were just alternates and didn't really add anything to the game. In BF2142, you are pretty much forced to play on ranked servers to play the full game. Even if we all agreed to play on our unranked server, the pub population would be next to nil.

Maybe for password nights?

Ideally, we will get all the unlocks needed by playing on the ranked server so that we may then enjoy our own unranked server with all the modifications that we'd enjoy, such as longer round times, custom mods, and anything else we want.

Good point. I'm still of the opinion that our ranked server will offer great team game play. There are lots of players who will play our server and come back for more. Yes, we will get the riff raff, but many players will put the TG server on their favorite list and make it the only ranked server they play. It will not take long to recruit players to stay with us and keep our ranked server populated.

You can use your unlocks on the unranked server. Problem solved.

The point is that while you're playing on the unranked server, you'll not be earning points towards new unlocks.

Re: Is having an unranked server worth it?

I'm still on the fence regarding 2142 but this whole situation is pushing me toward skipping 2142 entirely. In a weird sort of way this is becoming a mini-WoW situation.

Those who are able to put in more time to get unlocks are going to have some advantages over others. I'm not saying the balance is entirely in their favor, just that it seems it will more of a factor now.

The reality is I don't have more then a couple of hours all week to play and if I'll be playing against others who have lots more unlocks (whether it be on the ranked server or one of the unranked servers) it sounds like it may not be as fun as it could be.

Just seems more and more that this particular game isn't a fit for my playing time and style. Good luck to those of you having a blast!

I don't know how popular even conquest mode is right now. The Conquest servers don't seem all that populated, but I'm just looking at Demo right now.

Downloading the game as I type.

I haven't played conquest at all in the demo, but I don't like Titan for the simple reason that my fps takes a massive hit when I'm on board a Titan. Not the best reason, to be honest

Re: Is having an unranked server worth it?

I'd say if TG has to choose between a ranked or unranked server, it should choose ranked. This game isn't replacing BF2. It's more like a mod, or expansion pack. The majority of TG players will not be playing 2142 over BF2 mods.

So if we want to fill a server up, which lets face it, a server with 64 players with half of them pubbie jerks is still better than a server with only 20 TG players, then we need to go ranked.

Re: Is having an unranked server worth it?

First this is not WoW or any other level game where you need to play hours and hours to get unlocks. I played 6 hours and got 7 unlocks.

Which means I almost got all the unlocks for Assault.

You also get free temporary unlocks when playing in a squad in game so the diffrence between player that have all the unlock will not be days or months more in the hour range. The only diffrence is if you want unlocks for all classes on the same user you will have to spend time. But in my case I either play medic of Enginner so I only need those classes. It just forces you to specialize in one or two classes. It will limit a lot of switching between classes in game in the begining as players dont have upgrades for all classes.

The upgrades are not super upgrades either they are pretty balanced.

I think it would be great if we have the unranked server as we could have password nights with more tickets and have mods on it.

I think the ranked ticket count is actually not to bad in BF2142, its higher than BF2.

You still have plenty of time to play. Lets see how it turns out playing the TG way.

I love the idea that we will have a ranked server and we will have more people playing the TG way.

Re: Is having an unranked server worth it?

Actually, after a bit of thought I can see a scenario in which after we're all ranked and have a decent array of toys and such we'll prefer to play unranked just to be muppet-free and have TG scripts running. I know that after I unlocked a few weapons I wanted in BF2 I didn't care about ranks any more - hopefully the same will be true in 2142.

Re: Is having an unranked server worth it?

For one, there is no end to "when you get your unlocks." You just keep getting more and more. To get them all is literally hundreds of hours of playtime. I will never reach that.

Second, even if we all got a happy amount of unlocks and decided to switch to the unranked server - noone, and I mean noone will join it. Pubbies have no reason to play on an unranked server, at all. Even team oriented ones, because you always will be working to get more unlocks.

Re: Is having an unranked server worth it?

I am not sure about that. When I get all the unlocks for the assault class and the general unlocks which might take maybe a week or so then I wont feel that I need all the unlocks for the other classes. If I do need the other unlocks on the other classes then I will just create a new soldier and get them that way.

I think it all depends on how the game plays on the ranked server. If we get good play on the ranked server then we definetly should consider not having a permanent unranked server. I dont know how much the unranked cost us but I agree if its a lot we should consider removing it until we know if we need it

The big question for an unranked server is if we can get enough TG people to populate an unranked server if we have and need one. We just have to wait and see how this pan out.

Re: Is having an unranked server worth it?

For right now, at least the next couple weeks, I can say we absolutely do not need an unranked server. Nobody will be on it (TG or non-TG), so it's pointless to waste a server on it now.
