Wohoo! Key binding problem "fixed"

I am happy to announce that all of us who are having problems with key binding not saving are in luck! I just got off the phone and a lengthy discussion with EA and this is NOT a bug after all. It is by design. For example, when discussing my problem with having the mouse button 1 for forward and Z for backward the tech support told me we can't do this because (and yes this is a quote), "Those keys are not close to each other on the keyboard."

"You mean...uh...physically close on the keyboard?", says I.
"Yes. For example, you see if you use A for foward and Z for backwards they bind correctly."

So, please, everyone spread the word to the millions of FPS gamers who have similar key binding requirements: get with the program and realize this is not a bug. Redesign your control keys and be sure to have your ruler handy so you can make sure any two keys are not too far away from each other.

What idiots. I cannot believe they would take the time to program that into the game.

Hmmmm....what if you use a left handed mouse?

That's discriminatory against the port-handed among us.

I'm wondering if the tech you were talking to was just an idiot (which is usually the case) or if they really coded their keybinds with such odd restrictions.

I find the prior more likely. He just wanted to get you off the phone

I was talking about how they could want to spend the time coding that stupid restriction into a game when they could have been working out the numerous bugs the game has.

What about Dvorak keyboards?

Ya, most likely just a misinformed helpdesk monkey.

Whether the support guy is simply a moron or not, it is stupid that I am also unable to keep my bindings from BF2. Has the control logic changed all that much since then?!

Re: Wohoo! Key binding problem "fixed"

Have you tried to manually code in your keybindings.. then save a copy and each time you want to play first use your manual copy to overwrite the file?

Re: Wohoo! Key binding problem "fixed"

What I think the communication-challenged dude was trying to say is that bf2142 does not support control pairs (up/down, left/right, forward/back) where both bindings are not on the same controller. If forward is the right mouse button then backward has to be something else on the mouse controller, etc. At least that claim has some sort of logic to it, but as tempus said, this all worked fine in bf2 so I'm not sure how they could have screwed this up.

Yes, I have tried to manually edit the key bindings and make the file read-only. It still doesn't work. They keys will come up empty. Of all the technical glithes I expect in a complex graphics game like bf2142, key binding is not one of them. It's like seeing someone write a really crappy sorting algorithm for an application. It should never never happen. Those sorts of things have been optimized decades ago and there is no excuse for any professional developer to use anything else. Case in point, I used the exact same movement layout over ten years ago for DOOM and it worked perfectly...

Just for kicks I will call EA again today and see what sorts of answers I get.

Re: Wohoo! Key binding problem "fixed"

I recall when BF2 first came out it also had an issue saving some people's key bindings.

So this is nothing new for DICE.

Re: Wohoo! Key binding problem "fixed"

The interface for the controls setup is terrible. I ended up having to do it manually through the control file.

Have you tried copying your control file from BF2 over the one in BF2142? they use the same format...

What's funny is that this seems to be the main curse of the BF2 games. Alot of things that you would generally expect to be very simple are big problems. I mean, what grade 12 programmer couldn't make up a server selection screen without any bugs, like the 6 item selection limit? They've done some great things on the technical side, but can't seem to get the basics to work properly.

Re: Wohoo! Key binding problem "fixed"

For some reason the only key binding I can't get to stick is alt, which I like to use for prone. Other than that I am good.

Re: Wohoo! Key binding problem "fixed"

For whatever reason, the z key for prone just doesn't bind for me. IDK why, but it refuses to on the settings screen. I ended up using x, but I have to try setting it in the .con file.
