Server lag when no crash?

I experienced lag on the conquest server yesterday night, so I was wondering does the server start to lag if it hasnt crashed for a while?

I think we started to loose server population because of this around 11pm last night, or maybe it was just late and I should have gone to bed..

That is a real possibility. If the server code has a memory leak, which correct me if I'm wrong, BF2 did when first released, then after a prolonged period of the server not crashing it could start to lag due to lack of RAM. A server crash would cause the RAM to free itself.
