Wish they had an alternative to bunny...

I wish they had a realistic alternative to bunny hopping. I mean in a real gun fight, you could throw yourself to the ground either left or right. Do a roll. Lay your body flat against a wall.

Anyone ever thought of this. Hate the idea of an "evasive" move that is tied to a button. With a cooldown on the move maybe? Perhaps it uses all of your "run bar".

Or is going Prone/Crouching good enough? Just seems there is more that can be done in real life?

Edit: Almost forgot, the "forward shoulder roll". A real life move that allows you to go to the ground in a roll and keep moving forward, allowing you to get back to your feet all in one motion.

Probably never happen in a FPS, but just wanted to throw this out there.

p.s. I am still trying to completely break my "bunny hopping" habit while I reload. So just remind me if I have a slip. *blush*

I don't really have a habit, but sometimes I jump reflexively if I get freaked out by someone around a corner or something. Usually that just kills me cuz I can't shoot even if I have a full clip.

The alternative is to play Ghost Recon... a lot. Press spacebar all you want in that game. All it's going to do is... well, nothing. That'll teach any bunny hopper to keep his feet on the ground.

Thanks, that just gave me an Idea! I will just change my jump key! Somewhere still easy to get too, but different. Should help me in breaking this bad habit.

    Thanks Sarc!

    Back on topic.

Do you think there should be an "evasive action" key of some kind?

It'll also teach you not to side-step/strafe while running. It's always fun to take people used to Unreal Tournement or the BF series and throw them into Ghost Recon. You'll always be able to snipe them as they do the one-foot-sideways-shuffle.

    ::EDIT::

Also, has there been any real sort of evasive actions in any first person shooters? The only ones I can think of is going prone and "peaking" around corners.

First one that comes to mind is perfect dark zero. You could do evasive rolls. Cant think of any others though.

Battlefront 2 has a roll feature that's great for escaping grenades, but it's not exactly the pinnacle of realism...

*has wild and crazy dream wherein jumping becomes a little like nudging and tilt on a pinball machine -- you can get away with it once, but hammer that jump key and you'll lose control of your guy*

    ---

edit: Unreal had dodging. I think in UT you'd double-tap the strafe key to do it.

Unless there's something that I'm missing that's not a roll feature, it's just an animation.

I always get annoyed when the animation doesn't exactly match the reality. It's most noticeable when people drop to prone or are crawling and start shooting. The animation of the persons gun is not facing you, but you are still being shot in the face.

America's Army - You can rool, but you'd have to go prone first. Which is actually more realistically correct. As a Soldier, you generally don't just dodge bullets but jumping and rolling to safety. If you dont know where the Enefy fire is coming from, you generally go prone first, then try to relocate. If you know, its normally take a knee, and shoot the (insert Terms of Service Violation word here).
