Yes, the CO screen is far less responsive than in BF2. I rarely am able to zoom in correctly, everything has a delay to it, etc. Not a fun experience.

Well, when my SL drops and I end up taking over I do my best to issue orders, but without using voice it's hard to get everyone coordinated. I generally just pick a flag and tell everyone to sit tight and defend.

It is a little different from BF2. I've changed to right-clicking and zooming to get a closer view on an area. Clicking on the map to move to an area is just not responsive enough. With a little more time in the seat, you'll find your own methods of doing common actions.

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

I tried my hand at commanding a few times; it's fun, but a bit frustrating. Newbie commander experiences, I suppose.

One thing I tend to do that I think I shouldn't is dropping arty into masses of troops to "break up their advance" as they march to a flag. What I should probably do is wait until the squad at the flag itself has been eliminated then wait until the mass of enemy is clustered around the flag. Give my squads more time to regroup and re-assault the flag.

It's fun, but... I don't know. I don't find much strategy in it as it's difficult to form a cohesive "front" when some jerk in a buggy and zoom behind my line and take a flag to my guys' rear, ruining the line and forcing me back into the Battlefield "Whack-A-Mole" flag-chasing routine.

Plus I've lost each time I commanded the team, which leads me to believe that I somehow caused the loss. Which, in turn, makes me dejected. :P

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

No worries, Gillespie. CO and SL aren't positions you just pick up and are magically good at. There's a lot to learn, not just about the game, but about how to communicate your plan to your soldiers and how to get the most back from them.

Have you looked over at the BF2 Tactics Forum? There are CO and SL Intro guides there that contain a lot of info that can be ported over to 2142, such as how to set-up a co-ordinated defense between flags, concentrating attacks, and how to rotate squads so no one squad gets bored or feels pummeled the entire round.

Keep at it and hopefully you'll start to find your stride. If not, there's always the Away Bonus!

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

Not at all bored, and wishing I had more time to play. Like Penguin, I live for the weekends. I also almost exclusivly lead a Learn TG squad...and it kicks A$$!!! I have not even played PRM and only played POE for the scrim since 2142 came out. Jump in our squad Gil, maybe we can recharge the battery.

As a hint, if you hit enter instead of home you can take a look at the squad screen and see the squad layouts from there.

I'll have to try that out. I've been hovering over each squad in the list while in commander view. It's horrible since it covers quite a bit of the map and doesn't go away until you hover your cursor over a non-existant squad number.

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

Here is one thing you need to know as a CO: before zooming in LEFT-CLICK on the area you want to see, and then roll the mouse wheel to zoom. The map will stay centered on where you last clicked.

I've tried that and noticed if I click then wheel in too fast, it doesn't zoom in on the place I clicked. It sort of lags and you get zoomed to some point between where you previously would have zoomed and the new point you want to zoom.

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

Hmm, not exactly the right thread but at least it's a compainy one:

I just tossed a bad grenade (it bounced of terrain in a most unfortunate manner) and recieved three (count 'em) TK punishes after I $%#& called out that the nade was wonky and apologised. It's not that 2142 is boring, just that only one out of ten games is any fun thanks to the fools playing.

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

Agreed, TK punishes are out of control. Someone pops around a corner and fires at you, you kill them then revive them, and get a punished.

People need to think before they punish people.

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

That's been a problem since BF2. A lot of pubbies don't consider the circumstances before they inflict a TK punish.

I rarely punish anyone.

Re: *sigh* I just realized something...

I got punished early in one of the titan matches tuesday night. I was using the railgun trying to take out the enemy walker when a teammate in a buggy pulled in front of the bolt at the last second. I guess I should have been aiming higher but even though I quickly tossed out a "sorry," I still got punished for it.
